Lucifer: Godless Reawakening-Chapter 282: Change in plans
It had been three days since then.
For the past three days, most of the students had done nothing but train.
The second stage of the mid-terms had always been about assessing physical and magical ability.
Emma and William were no exception. Despite being stronger than most, they chose to stick to a disciplined routine, focusing on aether refinement rather than overthinking the exam.
At the moment, they were on their way to the gymnasium, where all students had been summoned.
For the past few days, the gym had been sealed off, strictly off-limits to everyone. Rumors had spread that the academy was preparing something massive this time.
But neither Emma nor William seemed particularly concerned about that.
"I’m worried about that kid," William said with a sigh, looking up at the sky.
"It’s been a while since we last saw her. She must be upset," Emma added, equally concerned. It had already been ten days since they last saw Nana.
William nodded before speaking again. "Once we finish things here, let’s head to the Tower immediately. We’ll stay there for a day, then leave for the County. What do you think?"
Even he didn’t like bringing up the trip, as if speaking of it might invite something unpleasant. But they still needed to decide their plans.
"Umm... Will, I’ve been meaning to tell you something for a while now," Emma said, glancing at him.
William’s brows lifted slightly as he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "What is it?"
Emma took a deep breath before speaking. "I’ve been planning this for some time... about the aether evaluation tool I mentioned before."
William’s shoulders slumped. "So you’re going to get busy and abandon me?"
Emma let out a soft whine. "Don’t say it like that. Of course I won’t be busy for long. Just... five days. I promise."
William lowered his gaze, silently calculating. They would get about twenty days of vacation. Subtract the trip to his home and the travel time, and that left barely ten days for the two of them.
Too little.
But complaining now would only make things harder for her.
"Alright," he said quietly. "I understand." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Guilt flickered across Emma’s face, but she pressed on. "Will... things are getting harder as time passes. If I don’t create something soon, people will start losing hope. And if that happens, the authorities will come after you more and more."
William chuckled softly. "You don’t have to explain it. I know you’re doing this because you’re worried about me."
He slipped his arm around hers, intertwining their fingers. "Babe, we’ll still have ten days to lose ourselves in each other. So don’t feel guilty, okay?"
A soft blush spread across Emma’s cheeks as she nodded, a small, happy smile forming on her lips.
Soon, they stepped into the massive domed gymnasium, and the noise hit them like a wave.
The entire arena throbbed with energy.
Rows upon rows of students filled the towering stands, their voices rising in excited roars, whistles, and chatter. The high ceiling carried the echoes endlessly, turning every cheer into a rolling thunder.
Banners hung from the railings, some bearing academy emblems, others hastily made by students to support their seniors. The air itself felt charged, thick with anticipation, as if the very space was waiting for something explosive to unfold.
At the center lay the vast arena floor, polished and reinforced, faintly lined with formation markings that hinted at the trials to come.
Academy staff moved about in the distance, making final preparations, their presence only fueling the growing excitement among the crowd.
"Heeyy!!!"
Cutting through the noise, a familiar voice called out.
Both of them turned toward the sound, spotting a wildly waving hand. Natalie stood a few rows up, her bright grin unmistakable even in the sea of faces. Beside her were Loid and Mia, both already settled in their seats.
"Let’s go," William said, guiding Emma through the buzzing crowd.
They made their way up the steps, slipping past groups of students who were too busy arguing, laughing, or speculating about the upcoming test to pay them much attention. The closer they got, the clearer their friends’ expressions became.
As soon as they reached them, Natalie leaned forward with a teasing smirk. "You really skipped today’s training just to spend time with him? What if that lack of discipline costs you points today?"
Emma let out a light chuckle, completely unfazed. "You don’t need to worry about that. Will gave me a few tips on how to dominate the battlefield."
She winked at him as she said it.
Mia instantly flushed, her eyes darting away, while Loid coughed awkwardly, his ears turning red. Natalie, on the other hand, simply shook her head as if she had expected nothing less.
William, ignoring their reactions, gestured toward the empty seats. "Let’s sit before someone else takes them."
The noise of the arena swelled once more, the atmosphere growing heavier with every passing second, as if the entire gymnasium was holding its breath for what was about to begin.
As they settled into their seats and fell into casual conversation, William felt it.
A gaze.
Subtle, but persistent. Lingering just enough to be noticed.
His expression didn’t change, but his eyes shifted slightly to the side.
There, a few rows away, sat the new transfer student.
The boy was already looking at them.
Their eyes met for a brief moment.
William’s gaze sharpened, narrowing just a fraction. He didn’t speak, didn’t react beyond that, but the air between them grew faintly tense.
The transfer student only snickered, as if amused by something unspoken, before casually turning his attention away.
At the center of the arena, a figure had appeared.
The headmaster.
Dressed in his usual composed attire, he walked steadily across the vast arena floor, his presence alone enough to command attention. The surrounding staff stepped back, giving him space as he moved to the center.
One by one, the students began to notice.
The noise that once filled the dome started to die down. Conversations softened, cheers faded, and whispers replaced the earlier chaos.
Within moments, a heavy silence settled over the gymnasium, all eyes drawn toward the old man standing at the heart of the arena.
He let the quiet stretch for a moment, his sharp eyes sweeping across the sea of students.
Then, he spoke.
"For years."
His voice was calm, yet it carried effortlessly through the entire gymnasium.
"For years, you have trained. You have pushed your bodies, refined your aether, and sharpened your minds. Some of you did so with discipline. Others, with desperation."
A faint pause followed.
"But today..." his gaze hardened slightly, "none of that matters unless you can prove it."
A ripple passed through the crowd.
"This is not a written test. This is not something you can pass by memorizing theories or repeating what you have been taught." His voice deepened, carrying a subtle edge. "This is where your instincts are measured. Your control. Your will."
He slowly raised a hand, gesturing toward the vast arena beneath him.
"Out there, you will not be guided. No one will correct your mistakes. No one will step in to save you."
His gaze turned stern.
"If you falter, you fall."
The weight of his words pressed down on the students, thick and undeniable.
Turning back to the students, he landed his final words, "So...when you go back to your rooms today, rather than guilt, you must have a smile on your face. A smile that declares that you did your best."
"This is your chance to showcase everything you have got. Don’t disappoint yourself on this stage."
