Lunar Awakening-Chapter 34: Bonus - : Tales Of The Scion Of A Great Family & The Noble Black Knight (1)
Williamson Vincenzo stood there in the grassland filled with dead corpses, his eyebrows pressed together as he pondered on how he would transport such a spoil back to Glory Base. The distance back was not small, meaning he could not carry it back. Even if he could, he doubted such a feat would be easy.
He looked down at the storage ring he had on his finger and, with a worried gaze, sighed. "I didn’t want to get blood all over my money, but I guess I have no choice." As he absorbed all of the dead critters into his storage ring, he pondered on who the armoured man was.
He had to admit, the man looked imposing, whoever he was underneath.
"If only I was just as strong as that armoured knight, I would have been able to kill these beasts too, with ease." Will sighed heavily as he sucked the last carcass into his ring and started to walk back to Glory Base.
Given that he had fulfilled his original mission, he now had no reason to keep coming back day after day. He had wanted their gullets originally, and as many as he could.
His family was never one of the richest and most influential families on the planet, all by sheer luck. In the times when the gates to the Hellscape started to appear, it was just right after the beast invasion. Though humans survived the apocalypse just barely, a new wave of diseases and pathogens slowly developed over the course of history.
Strange creatures with claws and flesh could be fought, but diseases with no exact origin were fatal. The Vincenzo family, however, had been one of the early human families to discover the growth of new diseases and try to cure them. Given that his ancestor was a highly praised research scientist who was one of the first to venture into the Hellscape, he found ways to stop the spread of a number of diseases.
Though diseases were still present in the waking world, they were not as dominant as they had been before. Vincenzo himself, Williamson, had followed in those footsteps and tried to collect samples that could save more human lives.
He had a theory that the gullets of the dormant ranked beasts could detoxify certain poisonous substances. The thought of having his name and face on the cure for a disease caused him to skip home with a spring in his leg. He totally forgot about the black-clad knight as he left the scene.
When he returned, however, he decided to isolate the parts he needed before going to the marketplace to sell the rest. As Will stepped onto the market grounds, he froze up, noticing all eyes on him, then shook it off. He rarely came there, so he had no idea why they all gave him odd looks. Unknown to him, his dressing seemed rather childish and out of place.
Ignoring all the eyes on him, he walked up to one of the wooden stalls that was free and offloaded his goods there. This caused the eyes of many to turn in his direction, though their eagerness faded when he began his advertising.
"Come one, come all. Have your fresh critter meat only at a 50% discount." His very boisterous personality and voice were enough to pull a large crowd to him.
Will honestly did not need money, so dropping the price so low did not interest him. However, he had another goal in mind. He wanted to gain followers and perhaps start his own clan in the future, and the best way to go about that was to gain the trust of others.
An hour passed, and then another. Williamson was still busy serving his loyal customers. In a world where tasteless potatoes were the bare minimum, meat was a rare delicacy, and since there was no actual way to preserve meat, it had to be sold fresh. Because of how hard it was to hunt beasts and subdue them in one piece to be sold later, the harder it was to put the beast down, the higher its cost value.
And honestly speaking, an actual superhuman would not want to spend more money on special meat, but having to eat even basic meat at a cheap price—now that was a goldmine.
Will was already near exhaustion after answering customer after customer for several hours when a commotion caused them to disperse. His head perked up, his face bathed in beads of sweat, when he was greeted by people he had no business dealing with.
"Who is the son of the devil that has been ruining the boss’s business?" came the voice of the villainous Clint Larring, known more by his title as the Viper and right hand of the Hands of War founder—Goliath.
Clint Larring walked forward with a number of other Hands of War mercenary group members by his side and headed for Will.
Will chuckled nervously as his eyes shifted slightly to assess the situation. "Oh hi there, my good friend. What might the problem be? I promise you the customer care is five stars."
Clint banged his fist into one of the stall’s wooden posts, causing it to explode like a piece of cardboard. A scar ran over his forehead just above his eye and looked fresh. He stared at Will with a predatory look and said, "I don’t know who you are or what you think you are doing, but why are you affecting the boss’s business? Since you got here, the sales have been stagnant, and we both know that meat ain’t gonna be fresh tomorrow."
Will stared daggers into Clint’s eyes, causing him to flinch a bit. "Now I have to pay for the beam you just broke."
Clint could feel a sudden change in the air, but he could not quite place it yet. However, this did not stop his taunting from getting worse. "You have the Hands of War in front of you, and you dare mouth off?"
Will looked away at the stall and then back at the man before saying, "I apologise if I have offended you. It’s just that I didn’t kill these beasts. I only acquired them from a very powerful awakened."
Clint noticed the energy in his voice, causing him to raise his own voice. "A powerful awakened killed all those beasts I heard you sold? What an obvious lie you are telling to my face, you human scum."
Will tried to explain as best as he could. "You don’t understand. It was a man in black armour. He killed all these things without getting even a drop of blood on him."
"And I’m supposed to be impressed?" Clint scoffed. "And what might be his name?"
Will said with a bit more confidence, "Mr Curses, he said."
This got Clint and the men with him to laugh so hard that Will’s face practically burned with embarrassment. "I’m serious."
"What kind of name is that?" Clint laughed.
Will stood there for a few more seconds, saying nothing, before muttering, "Shut your damn mouths. You don’t even know how powerful he is. He can crush a boulder with his fist."
Clint laughed even harder. "The boss can do that with ease."
Will felt his rage fuming, barely managing to overtake his embarrassment for a moment. "I bet he can beat your boss."
In that moment, the laughs stopped and the market grew incredibly quiet. Clint Larring and his lackeys looked at him like they were going to chew him up.
Will tried to back up, but he was surrounded on all sides, realising his anger had gotten the better of him. He did the only thing he could to get himself out of his lie. He lied some more.
"Actually, that was what Mr Curses said, along with that he might be the strongest awakened in the base," he said nervously and waited.
Clint smiled slightly and said, "Oh, is that so? How do we contact him?" His voice was etched with the will to kill.
Will swallowed hard as he spoke. "I don’t contact him. He contacts me."
Clint waited a bit before saying, "Hmm, is that so? Then until you get this Mr Curses out here, you will do no business here. And in the spirit of fairness, you will begin to share the profit with the Hands of War."
They flipped over his stall before leaving. Will stood there, slightly trembling at what he had done. Just what had he gotten himself into?
’I am so sorry, Mr Curses, but it seems I might have doomed your future and ruined your reputation.’
He had to find the man who had only appeared to him once and by accident. Could such a coincidence like that repeat itself?
It was in that moment that Williamson Vincenzo realised what he had been too short-sighted to see all along.
’Am I actually the one doomed right now?’
