Chapter 45: You Know My Daughter?

A murmur erupted from the group of awakened superhumans but it quickly died down. Leo reserved any comment he had to himself, he did not see why a distinguished man who wants to kill his own daughter.

He doubted there was anything his daughter would do to warrant such a date, and if so why send twelve awakened after her and not pay some corporate assassin for the role.

Unless...

...she was not an ordinary human but an awakened.

This conclusion felt like the most logical one at the moment.

Bolton Neuman snapped his fingers causing the room to go dark for a split second before a projector came on, an image was then display on the wall to their side.

They could see what looked like an officer lying on the ground, all of his joints in his hands including the ones on his fingers had been snapped in the wrong way.

The grotesque image was enough to make any grown man thrown up, but superhumans had dealt with dark things. Unfortunately even this sight was something totally new to them, since beasts simply killed its victims seeing something such as what was displayed on the wall was unsettling.

The face of the man had been ripped out. It looked like someone had perform a torture to inflict the most horrible form of pain imaginable to his victim before they died.

"Oh god." One of the female awakened screamed.

Another one doubled down and threw up right on the priceless carpet on the ground. No one could blame them.

Leo reached differently, he did not feel intimidated by the image whatsoever. Instead he felt fascinated, it took all of his willpower to stop himself from salivating at the grotesque image.

’What is wrong with me? That is a fucking corpse I’m fantasizing over."

Bolton continued. "This is one of the bodyguards she attacked."

The huge awakened from earlier did not feel anything from looking at the image he instead focused his attention on the one paying them. "How do we find her, and does the prize go to whoever snaps her neck."

Leo glanced over at the huge man, he could tell immediately that he was a veteran of sorts. He did not look like someone who wanted to waste time on the details, well neither was he. But after seeing the image, he had to know what sort of crazed lunatic he was going up against.

Bolton continued. "You won’t have to find her, she’ll come for her sister."

He snapped his fingers causing the image projected on the wall to change. Displayed there now was the image of a young girl, with a smile and innocence that reminded him of Trish.

"This is my daughter, Melissa. She’s only six years old and her her sister is targeting her for termination." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Now Leo was even more confused.

One of the awakened rose from his seat and pointed at the picture displayed on the wall. "What the fucking hell is up with your family? There is no way a girl did that to a man and now she’s after her own sister to kill her."

"You better explain what’s going on here." Another one said.

Leo had to agree, now he was beginning to have second thoughts about taking this job. Hopefully he could still pull back if things went south.

Bolton Neuman looked at them with seriousness written over his face and said, "It’s all my fault." Guilt emanated from his voice. "All of this goes back four months, my daughter kept a secret from me till she could no longer beat it. The song of sorrows had come for her, she wanted it to end. She wanted me to be the one to do it, but I could not."

"For fucks sake." One of the awakened cursed.

Roxy’s face darkened.

"Instead I locked her away and called the best scientist I could to try and save her."

"You bastard." Another of the awakened said.

Leo could understand why they were so angry, after all only someone who had heard the song of sorrows could relate to it. Being chosen by the dreamscape one had to under go a sort of transformation.

The song of sorrows was a strange melody that clouded ones mind and made them see things that were not there. It was a tormenting experience without an end till one crossed into Hellscape, for Leo he had to watch his mother died before his eyes over and over again.

There was no way to avoid the song but to becone a superhuman. So without a doubt the awakened knew that she would have been driven mad by it.

And when one lost their sense of self they would stop becoming human and turn into a being similar to a beast but in human form.

"She broke free one day and I never saw her again", Bolton’s tone grew colder.

"Until now that is", the person who spoke this time was Roxy, her tone was filled with so much remorse that it almost felt like she was. "You lunatic, you turned her to a monster."

"I thought I could save her." Bolton mumbled.

The picture on the wall changed to show a beautiful young girl.

"This is my daughter, for some reason she has been targeting my youngest daughter." He added.

"HINATA!"

Everyone in the room was silenced by an unfamiliar cold voice, hearing it filled everything with dread.

They all looked in the direction of the voice to find a young man seated on a chair, his features were not too dignified but were prominent. He looked young but had an air about him. Roxy was the only one who could put into words what the aura felt, it was an aura of dominance that left everyone speechless.

Bolton was the first to speak, "You know my daughter?"

Leo turned his head slowly and stared daggers at the man, "I met her two days ago, she seemed lost and harmless. I treated her to a bowl of ramen."

Everyone was left speechless.

Bolton cleared his throat and spoke nervously, "What colour was her hair?"

Leo looked back at the picture projected on the wall to see Hinata only with black hair and looking more vibrant than her pale self. It was almost impossible to believe that she was once a loving girl, and now she was a monster.

"It was white."

Leo’s answer seemed to shock the man as he realised that he was already telling the truth.

’So that was a monster?’ He told himself.

He has always expected a monster to be anything but human, lifeless and unfeeling. But did he really survive an encounter with a monster but she seemed so human.

What on earth was a monster really?

The huge awakened spoke, "So you met the bitch and survived. How did you not know she was a monster?"

Leo chose not to answer any questions as long as it was not from Mr. Neuman himself.

Roxy stole a glance at Leo and then looked back at the founder of Neuman’s Aeronautics and said, "Why did she return only to come after her sister and not you?"

"Or more importantly how did she evade the authorities all this time, or did you not tell them?"

A lot of questions soon filled the room, but in a quiet corner Leo sat in silence playing back what had happened on that day.

He had questions himself.

Why had she not attacked him?

Was there a sliver of humanity left in her?

How was he supposed to know that she was a monster when she looked so human?

Could there be monsters living in the human world and walking around him without him knowing? There were so many dark spots he needed light to be shed upon.

But a question tugged at him.

’If this is her father then whose house did I deliver that monster to?’
