Chapter 75: Chapter 75

Sebastian’s heart ached whenever he remembered that scene. He already had suicidal thoughts after Winter’s death, and the only thing stopping him was his mother.

Despite being a victim of her abuse since childhood, he still couldn’t kick Camilla out of his life.

There was an unhealthy dependency between them, and Sebastian struggled to make a swift decision whenever Winter begged him to stop Camilla from bullying her.

He was afraid of hurting the single mother who had raised him. She might’ve abused him, punched and kicked him many times on top of verbally abusing him. But it had been embedded in his mind that Camilla was his only family, and he didn’t want to lose her.

Sebastian finally gained clarity after he shot himself in the chest. In those few seconds of consciousness before he died, all he could think of was Winter and the warmth she brought.

Winter had never hurt him.

Winter had never verbally abused him.

Winter never loathed him.

She was always there, waiting for him to come home for a warm hug.

She was always there, kissing him every night as long as he didn’t reject her.

’I was truly an idiot...’ Sebastian blamed himself for everything. ’I could’ve just ignored my mom and kicked her out of my married life, but I let her hurt Winter because I was afraid of her. I betrayed my wife’s trust, and ignored her through her desperate situations.’

Now that his mind was clear as day, he finally knew his priority.

’I have only one priority: to keep Winter safe and sound by my side. I’ll fulfill that mission no matter what,’ Sebastian vowed. ’And if things go well, I can finally rest and start anew with my wife, probably with a child or two.’

Sebastian’s lips twitched, and he couldn’t help but smile at the idea of having a small, happy family with Winter.

Feeling optimistic, he called Mikhail, and it was connected not long after. freewebnσvel.cøm

"Hi, Sebastian. It’s been a while since you called me. Is there something wrong?" Mikhail asked, getting straight to the point. He already understood his role as Sebastian’s mole and he knew that Sebastian needed him to do something.

"Mikhail, I need your help."

"With what?" Mikhail asked. "Don’t tell me you want to shut the loan shark business down. You know it’s too deeply rooted for you to do so."

"No, we can do that later. I want you to watch my mom’s every move," Sebastian said vaguely. "Have you seen her being close with any man? Maybe one of her clients defaulted on the loan, and she forced him to stay by her side."

"Uh..." Mikhail was confused by the question but tried his best to answer coherently. "I’m not her personal assistant, so I don’t know much. But as far as I remember, I’ve never seen her being close to anyone in the office. As for the people who defaulted... Do you have a specific person in mind? I can look it up in my database."

"Uh..." Sebastian tried to remember the man’s face. He wasn’t particularly handsome, but he had that mature aura, probably even more so than Sebastian, despite being younger. Sebastian then began listing all the man’s facial features: dirty blonde hair, dark eyes, and glasses.

Mikhail sighed. "I don’t need to know his facial features. I need a name so I can look it up."

"Yeah, I don’t know his name."

"Eh... then I can’t help you, Seb. Sorry."

"I thought so," Sebastian said. He guessed that man was probably somewhere out there and hadn’t met Camilla yet.

He knew his mom. Once she was infatuated with a man, she’d discard anything. Literally anything. Including her own son.

Sebastian remembered when he was around nine years old. He was left alone in his house, trying his best to survive by eating anything he could find in the fridge while his mother was busy having a long, romantic holiday with her new boyfriend.

It was hell on earth for Sebastian, and he cried a lot because he thought he had been abandoned by the only family he had in life.

Fortunately, Camilla returned after spending a week in Malibu. She was in a terrible mood after breaking up with her then-boyfriend, and she lashed out at Sebastian when she saw the house was a mess while she was away.

Sebastian got hit with a belt plenty of times until the skin around his back was bruised, but he was happy that he hugged his mother while being punished.

Because he really thought that his mother didn’t want him anymore.

If he could play the blame game, he would’ve blamed his mother’s abusive behavior for every bad thing that happened to him when he became an adult.

But he still blamed himself for everything bad that happened to Winter. He was the one who didn’t listen to her plea, after all.

"Sebastian? Sebastian!"

"Oh... sorry. My mind trailed off just now," Sebastian apologized. "Anyway, just keep an eye on my mom. If she ever brings a young man around my age into her office, inform me immediately."

"What’s this all about? Did she have a new boyfriend?" Mikhail asked. "Which unfortunate man would be her next victim, I wonder."

Sebastian chuckled because it was true.

Any man who got entangled with Camilla would have his life ruined by any means. Camilla was a really petty and vengeful woman. That’s why Sebastian was scared of his mom when he was little.

Whenever he did something to fight back against her abuse, Camilla would double down on the punishment until Sebastian cried hysterically, enduring mental and physical pain.

"Alright, that’s the only work I have for you right now," Sebastian said.

He was about to hang up when Mikhail suddenly mentioned Winter, "Oh, you’re recently married, right, Seb?"

"Yes. What about it?"

"Well, I... I don’t know how to say this, but your mother seems to hate her. She often talks about how your wife is a—uh... I prefer not to say it. But you can imagine it, right?"
