Chapter 26 - Episode 9: Stone-Throwing

Everyone knows what they have to do and how to do it. Such qualities are cultivated through years of war. Over the past century, hundreds of thousands of beastmen have become fertilizer for the Whistling Plain north of Moon Harbor City. The grass there always grows exceedingly lush, but when horses eat it, they easily fall ill and suffer from fevers, sometimes resulting in death. People say it's the vicious curse planted by the beastmen with their own blood.

Moon Harbor City has also paid a tremendous price in these years of battles, with the graves of fallen warriors forming a contiguous line on a hundred-meter slope south of the city. However, these battles are far from being as resilient as the life force of Moon Harbor City. Through one trial by fire after another, Moon Harbor City still stands firm in the north of sacred Pate, bravely facing the fierce winds of the Whistling Plain and one test after another.

Every city with history has its own spirit. When you see the soldiers on the city wall facing north with stern expressions, and then look at the martyr's cemetery in the southernmost part of the city, you understand the spirit of this city. With countless fallen heroes watching, how could one not fight with all their might?

In this city, perhaps there is still one person who cannot comprehend this spirit. He believes that having a tenacious spirit is a counterweight that influences victory in battle, but far from a guarantee of winning. Without proper battle concepts and strategies, sending these excellent warriors into the jaws of death is a huge waste.

Lynch still stood at the position where he had observed the battlefield yesterday. However, this time, he was alone. Sir Gangsa and Knight Macken had both gone to the front line of the city wall, with Knight Macken specifically responsible for commanding the catapult battalion. Lynch stood alone at the highest point of the city wall, gripping his magic wand tightly in his hand.

The sun gradually ascended into the sky, and the giants finally began to move. They formed a horizontal line, marching grandly toward the towering city walls of Moon Harbor City.

The residents watching from the city drew in a sharp breath; this scene was entirely different from a beastman's attack. Row after row of hill-like giants marched with a consistent pace, each step leaving a mark on the ground, maintaining an unwavering speed as they advanced. The thick city walls might be a towering fortress to the beastmen, but to the giants, they seemed somewhat pale and powerless.

The heavy footsteps made the distant Moon Harbor City tremble, and Lynch could feel this vibration on the city wall. This was the giants' usual tactic, using the coordinated sound of their marching steps as the first psychological weapon to crush the enemy. From afar, the mage could see that this time, the giant ranks included numerous stone giants, each carrying large, bulging bags on their backs. It seemed that the contest of long-range weapons would be the key to deciding victory in this battle.

There were still 400 meters to go, and at this moment, Moon Harbor City began to unleash its might.

"Release!" The attack of the catapults began. A flag representing the catapult battalion was hoisted up on the city head, signaling all the catapults, no matter where they were positioned on the city wall, to launch their assault simultaneously.

Nearly fifty giant catapults simultaneously hurled their ammunition, a dark storm of stones flew towards the giant's front line.

Yet, the giant ranks did not halt their footsteps; instead, the stone giants stepped forward, standing at the forefront of the ranks. They dropped the bags from their backs, eyes fixed intently on the incoming giant rocks.

The stones arced beautifully through the air, aimed at the enemies' flesh and blood. The stone giants stretched out their arms and opened their massive hands to catch the flying stone bullets.

The powerful impact traveled through their arms, stretching and vibrating the giants' muscles like springs, transforming the instantaneous force of collision into a continuous pressure. For the robust stone giants, this was a piece of cake. They merely took half a step back, completely neutralizing this attack.

The giants did not put down the stones but instead lifted them over their heads with a loud shout and swung their arms, hurling them back again.

Unfortunately, although the giants were powerful, they could not match the distance the catapults could project with their height advantage. The stone bullets, produced in Moon Harbor City, all landed about two hundred meters away from the city walls.

Thus, within the 400-meter to 200-meter range, how many giants could be killed became the key to determining victory or defeat.

The command flag for the city head catapults rotated three times before pointing towards the right wing of the giant ranks. When it waved up and down again, Moon Harbor City's catapults launched their second wave of attacks. This time, all the catapults targeted the right side of the giant ranks.

Even if the giants could catch the flung stones, how many could they catch this time? The stone giants in the center had not yet arrived on the right side to assist, and stones rained like a storm onto the orderly ranks. Some stone giants caught the first stone, only to be toppled by the subsequent stones or the solid projectiles flying in from the side. As for the hill giants, they might handle some smaller stones, but the enormous projectiles launched by these giant catapults were beyond their capacity. They were nothing more than targets, extraordinarily large targets at that.

The rumbling sounds continuously echoed, drowning out the sound of the giants' march, this was the sound of Moon Harbor City. Many soldiers leaned out from the city walls, excitedly observing the battle at a distance.

Lynch also watched the battlefield, and the sight of the giants being battered astounded him. After all, anticipating such a scenario and witnessing the intense conflict firsthand were two completely different things.

"Release!" Moon Harbor City launched its third wave of stone bullets, this time aiming at the middle path of the enemy.

The giants couldn't endure the humiliation of being passively battered any longer, and they all threw their ammunition. Unfortunately, not a single stone could threaten the walls of Moon Harbor City.

After the fourth round of stone-throwing, the giants retreated.

The entire Moon Harbor City erupted in victorious cheers. For a long time, the threat of the giants had been a heavy burden on the residents' hearts, the threat from unfamiliar, unknown races, the insecurity brought by the unknown had always loomed over the hearts of every inhabitant of Moon Harbor City. Today, everyone had seen the giants and felt the powerful presence of the giants; simultaneously, today, everyone also saw the strength of Moon Harbor City, witnessed the giants fleeing in a panic, and a newfound sense of certain victory filled the heart of every person.

Lynch mounted the Shadow Horse and, using the Invisibility Technique, ascended over the battlefield.

The ground was strewn with shattered bodies, and the purple-red blood soaked into the soil of the Whistling Plain, turning the autumn's last patch of wild grass black. Severed limbs were everywhere, some still connected to bodies now reduced to meat paste. Wherever the massive stone bullets struck, they formed a pit, into which nearby blood pooled, creating clusters of dark purple craters on the battlefield. The giants left behind approximately a hundred corpses this time. It certainly dealt an effective blow to their morale and strength.

Lynch made another circle, he dared not pursue the giant's ranks with his Invisibility Technique about to expire. He flew back to Moon Harbor City, where, except for the guards who stood unwaveringly at their posts, everyone else had joined in the celebration of victory.

The giants hadn't inflicted any damage on Moon Harbor City, yet they had to retreat. Hence, even if they charged, it would leave many corpses on the whistling plain without posing a real threat to the city walls. Victory seemed foreseeable.

But could victory truly be foreseen? In his heart, Lynch felt something was amiss...
