Chapter 22: First Day At J*b

Boom!

Just a little off mark.

From not even landing it on the board to now just being a little off mark to the bullseye, Azariah had improved by a lot.

And most of it, yes, had been done overnight.

No matter how much he trained in classes before, he was unable to control the recoil that acted on his body.

He was weak and thus the aim was always going haywire.

However now....

It was a different case.

Now the body wasn’t a problem. With time, he’d land those shots straight at the bullseye. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

’The difference is truly amazing.’

He could see himself getting some weird stares from the side as well.

It made sense as not only were his muscles more refined now but his body posture had changed as well.

He was taller, straighter, and sharper. His skin now looked cleaner and healthier, rather than the ghostly pale from before.

The side features got better as well.

Overall, it wasn’t a huge but quite a noticeable change.

Especially, when he saw his terminal.

[Mana: 4000/4000]

Wild.

Closing his eyes, he tried to channel mana through his body and a smile spread across his face.

It was smoother, cleaner, and faster.

If before it was like crossing a car through a muddy road with potholes, now it was just a muddy road.

He could still feel some hindrances but it was still way better.

It would just get better and better with each rank as well.

"Student Azariah."

Recognizing the voice, Azariah turned to see Evangeline in front of him.

There was much more precision in her gaze compared to other times when she talked to him.

’She’s examining me.’

"You’ve improved quite a lot from your first day."

She looked at the bullet mark left on the target and Azariah nodded.

"I guess I have."

Evangeline was silent for a moment, her gaze still on him before she turned.

"Good job."

Then, she went to another student.

Azariah wasn’t surprised by the small exchange.

Regardless of how cold and distant Evangeline was, she was someone who cared about her students the most.

She took notice of every improving and hardworking student and made sure to applaud them.

For someone who had been employed as a temporary teacher, she was quite good at her job.

Getting back to his training, Azariah kept shooting until finally the training was over.

He had a meeting with Melissa today unlike yesterday so he quickly went over to Alyssa.

"I have a meeting with the Regulation Committee today."

Alyssa simply nodded, giving no thought to it.

But then, she kept staring at Azariah as if she had something else to say.

"Uh?" Azariah tried to excuse himself.

"What? You can go." Alyssa took notice that he was there because of her staring.

"Oh, alright."

Azariah didn’t try to remind her. He was happy to be let off free.

But just as he was about to leave, she called out.

"Wait."

"Hmm?" Azariah turned back.

"Where did you go yesterday?"

"Nowhere, only the training facility." Azariah answered.

For some seconds, Alyssa stared at him in suspicion before conceding.

"Alright."

Shrugging, Azariah didn’t continue the conversation and left the venue.

Azariah came to the cafeteria lounges, where Melissa had instructed him to meet.

As he searched for her, his mind flicked back to the previous conversation.

Nowadays, he was deliberately cutting conversations short with Alyssa and leaving her on her own.

Thankfully, she had developed quite a good relation with Anastasia and Rosalia this time around because of sitting upstairs.

He knew by not talking much, it was going to not improve their relationship. Especially with Alyssa’s moody personality.

But it was the best for now. Not only was Azariah busy but he also needed to solidify Alyssa and the main cast’s relationship as much as possible.

These were the foundation steps to stop her from becoming a villain.

"Walking around places like these without any alertness of your surroundings could cost you an arm." Azariah felt a tap on his shoulder.

Taken by surprise, he quickly turned behind only to see no one there.

"Fell for it." He heard from behind and he turned once more.

However, his senses suddenly flared up urging him to tilt his head.

The moment he did so, he felt a fist fly past his cheek.

Azariah’s eyes landed on the voice’s owner, Melissa, who was pleasantly surprised at his reaction.

"Oh, instinctive."

"What are you doing?" The former asked, slightly annoyed.

"I should ask you what you are doing? Look around yourself, they are all looking to murder you."

It was at these words that Azariah was brought to his senses.

And looking around the cafeteria more carefully now, he noticed some of them staring at him maliciously.

Their glares were masked quite well.

"My bad, I was too immersed in my thoughts." He apologized now.

Melissa nodded.

"It’s fine, be more alert in the future. This place is like a warzone nowadays, you never know when a fight might start," she said while tossing a badge to him.

Catching it, Azariah saw it was the Regulation Committee member badge.

"Just know, the moment you put on that badge you will be a certified member of this committee and become the public enemy number one of these students." Melissa looked around.

Nodding, Azariah strapped the badge to his coat without any thoughts.

"No regrets?" Melissa asked.

"I don’t really care. I came to the committee for a reason."

Melissa nodded, a slight smile on her face.

"Good. I need to go now on some other work, so you’ll be on duty here with another guy. He should be here soon."

Just as she said those words, someone came from the side.

"I’m here."

As soon as he heard the voice, a bad feeling crept up into Azariah’s chest.

But as he turned, his worst fears came true.

’What is this guy doing here!?’

It was Yvan, with the guy having the same reaction on his face as the other day.

It finally clicked to Azariah on why Yvan was acting weirdly the other day.

This guy already knew that he was going to get paired up with Azariah.

"Captain Oslo has lent him to us for duty. You two will patrol the area and stop any duels that occur," Melissa said to Azariah, not noticing the tension between the two guys.

However, Yvan was quick to speak up.

"No disrespect, Miss Melissa, but how are you expecting the weakest guy here to stop duels? I’ll not be responsible if he ends up in the infirmary."

Looking at his face, Azariah couldn’t tell if he was trying to insult him or just wanted to get placed somewhere else.

Unfortunately for the guy, Melissa stared in silence for a few seconds at him, then at Azariah.

Before she turned back to him and spoke,

"Don’t worry, I’m sure my student can handle himself. You don’t need to babysit him."

Yvan looked hopeless at the rejection but he couldn’t do anything else.

Melissa ignored him and turned back to Azariah, nearing her face to his ear.

"You can use your other ability, just make sure to not make it too obvious."

Unfortunately, Azariah was less focused on her words and more on what she was doing by bringing her face so close.

Even Yvan was staring weirdly at the two.

Melissa didn’t notice, however, and just flashed a smile to Azariah before departing.

A silence stretched between the two guys as they stared at each other awkwardly.

Azariah felt like slapping his forehead.

’I did not sign up for this.’
