Magus Bloodlines.-Chapter 34. Gavin vs Cedrion.
Chapter 34 - 34. Gavin vs Cedrion.
Gavin was already getting exhausted. The battle had only lasted a few minutes so far, but he had already burned through so much mana in the initial few attacks. His thigh was still burned from the cauterized hole in his thigh that the enemy had managed to inflict already. He glanced at Helena to see she was easily moving from enemy to enemy, striking them down with impressive lethality as she moved, like a graceful dancer on the battlefield.
Gavin looked over to see the black male with the rifle pointed at him as a blonde-haired man with a scar that ran down the left side of his face walked up behind him. He spoke to the black man quietly and amidst the field of battle, Gavin was unable to hear what was being said. Gavin did notice that the scarred man watched him with evident hatred that distorted his features. Gavin decided that he wasn't going to waste any time as he summoned a ball of dark energy in his hand. It twisted and distorted, black tendrils leaking out as he condensed his mana into this next spell. He threw it towards the ceiling, causing it to expand and eventually explode.
It was an idea he got from a manga he read over the summer and wanted to try it out. As the ball of darkness magic exploded, a veil of shadows and darkness filled the arena, blocking out everything as if one was outside on the blackest of new moon nights. Gavin hoped that would prevent anyone but him and Helena would be able to see and make things a little bit easier with their enhanced eyesight.
Gavin heard some cursing and shouts as he quickly ran forward towards the black man with the rifle. He appeared to be the larger threat with a high-powered weapon and Gavin decided to dispose of him first. His padded feet made no sound as he ran across the arena floor, his eyes seeing everything as if during daylight. The spell wouldn't last more than a few minutes, but he would get the most out of it. He had a feeling these two men were the leaders of this operation. If he killed them, the rest would run away in fear.
These were Gavin's thoughts as he charged the man with the rifle. He stopped right in front of him as he threw back his hand, intending to plunge it through his chest to rip his heart out, when suddenly the blonde male raised his silver pistol and took a few shots at Gavin. Gavin caught sight of the motion at the last second and barely had time to drop to the ground and avoid the gunfire. The bullets wiped overhead, and he felt the wind from them against his fur. He growled low as he rolled on the ground and jumped to his feet.
How did the blonde man know he was there? He shouldn't be able to see anything right now and Gavin knew he didn't make any sound as he ran over. Gavin's mind was racing with the possible answers as he tried to run at them from the side and once again the scarred man kept his gun trained on Gavin the entire time. That was when Gavin noticed there was something behind the man's eyes. A cybernetic implant. That must be how he was able to see in total darkness, Gavin realized suddenly, as everything clicked into focus for him.
Gavin growled low in frustration as he charged his mana and fire engulfed his arms again as he threw out a few fireballs of destruction towards the blonde-haired man. This one was obviously more dangerous. Upon further inspection, something about this man seemed familiar to Gavin as he charged him. He knew he'd never seen this man before, but something was screaming at Gavin's wolf to kill him, now and fast before he got away.
"Filthy mutt, stand still so I can kill you!" the blonde shouted as he dropped a magazine and reloaded his gun. He was taking aim and firing off rounds as his second in command took up position at his back and doubled down on his efforts to put the wolf down.
"You made a mistake choosing this place to attack," Gavin shouted in anger as he jumped and ducked, dodging the bullets with inhuman speed. His lungs were burning from the constant exertion. His mana was running dangerously low, and he had to find a way to end this quickly before he was left exhausted in the middle of a battlefield. This just showed Gavin how inexperienced he really was with battle tactics.
"I thought I killed all you damn wolves eighteen years ago. It seems I missed a few," the scarred man shouted back as he summoned some magic and sent some powerful blasts at Gavin to throw him off balance.
Gavin's heart froze at that comment. Rage, hatred and fear filled his mind as realization dawned on him. He knew where he recognized the scarred man. His dreamwalking visions with his parents. Over the summer they intensified, and he witnessed exactly how they died that day. He watched these men as they slaughtered his clan and kin in that mountain pass. The way this man in particular killed his mother and father. Hatred blinded him as his vision went dark, focusing on just the blonde-haired man as he spoke.
His power began surging inside him. In a sudden burst of energy, his mana exploded from his body. The waves of energy pulsating around him. They burned through the darkness spell Gavin had cast and revealed the state of the battlefield. Helena was across the arena, many bodies filled the space between them as she worked on thinning their numbers as quickly as possible. Until the waves of energy spread out far enough to knock her against the wall. Everyone in the arena was either forced on their knees or slammed against the sides as Gavin's anger and hatred took control and his energy surged out of control.
First quest received. Survive the battle against the one who murdered your kin. Reward - instant level up. Secondary conditions met. You are now able to access the overdrive ability. This ability allows all current stat points to become tripled for a limited time. The potency of spells cast will be increased by double the strength. This effect will last ninety seconds. Drawbacks of use are an instant depletion of stamina and the user will become vulnerable and weak until recovery. Do you wish to activate the Overdrive ability? Veronica spoke in Gavin's mind, offering him a quest with a reward and the knowledge of a new ability he unlocked.
Gavin was too far gone in his rage to think clearly at that moment. The only desire he had, the only thought going through his mind, was to slaughter the man who had killed his family. To get revenge, no matter the personal cost. His mana was still exploding in powerful waves around him as he momentarily debated and gave a simple response to Veronica.
"Yes." Gavin gave the simple singular word command to his AI system. Suddenly, a new burst of power flooded Gavin's mind and body. His mana became even more chaotic and surged more powerfully in the arena as he threw his head back and let loose a howl that sent a shiver down even the scarred man's spine. This was something new, something different. He could feel the power that emanated from the young wolf, and he was concerned.
Helena glanced over to where Gavin was losing control. His howl filled her with enhanced strength as she rose to her feet. She began running back to meet him as she fought through the waves of power that emanated from his body. She took note of the two men that remained in front of him as he glared at them both.
"I will kill you, here and now!" Gavin roared in furry as he lunged forward, his newly enhanced speed making him appear to teleport behind the men as he threw out a right kick and connected to the scarred man's side, sending the man flying across the arena. He landed in a crumpled head against one of the stone columns nearby.
The black man let out a curse and cry of warning, "Cedrion!" He raised his rifle and tried to take aim at the black werewolf in front of him, but the creature was already gone. Suddenly, he felt pain in his back as he was sent flying by another kick from the beast. He landed against the benches and coughed up blood as he tried to force himself to catch his breath and stand back up.
Gavin glanced back at the blonde man who was already rising to his feet. He had a small silver object in his left hand as he glared at Gavin. "Come on, you pathetic animal. I'll reunite you with your family soon enough," the man said to antagonize Gavin into lashing out in anger. Boy did that work. Gavin sprinted forward, running on all fours as he snarled in rage and hatred. His crimson red eyes illuminated brightly against his black fur.
"I'll rip your heart out and shove it down your throat!" Gavin shouted in furry as he closed the distance to the man. He ignored the object in his left hand as he jumped, claws extended as he attempted to plunge his fist through the man's chest. He would kill him. This man would die right here and now for the pain he caused his clan. Gavin witnessed everything that day. He saw the sick satisfaction he took as he burned the women and children. The way he killed his parents without mercy. Today, the Lykos clan will be avenged.
The man grinned as he threw out the object and an electrical field encircled Gavin. He was caught in the same trap that his father once was. Electrical surges spread throughout his nerves and locked his body down, unable to move. Gavin snarled from the pain as he struggled against the trap. But, try as he might, he was unable to do anything in the current situation.
The scarred man laughed as he took in the sight of the fearsome beast struggling against his trap. No shifter had ever been able to break free from it. He designed it himself to be capable of holding the alpha shifters without breaking. This kid didn't have a chance to break free.
Professor Jason looked out in horror as he noticed that the kid was trapped in some kind of electrical field. The blonde-haired man was laughing like a deranged fool as he took stock of Gavin. Helena was exhausted and tried to make her way back towards the boy. She was almost at the limits of her current strength and didn't have the energy to rush across the arena. Professor Jason was too far away to be of any substantial assistance. It didn't look good for Gavin as his allies were exhausted and hurt as they watched on.
"Boy, you aren't the first wolf I've had the pleasure of killing. The last group was filled with nothing but cowards and weaklings as I took my time, burning and killing every last man, woman, and child. I thought I had ridden the world of your filthy kind. But it seems I missed a few," the scarred man said as he taunted Gavin.
Gavin snarled in rage and pain as he tried desperately to break through and rip the man's throat out. He would not die here. Not like that. Not by him. There had to be some way for Gavin to push through and reach his target. His wolf was beyond angry at the trap. The taunting words only fueled his rage as he struggled in futility.
"This is goodbye, mangy mutt," the man said as he raised his pistol and aimed it right between Gavin's crimson red eyes.
Suddenly,a blast of fire magic slammed into the back of the scarred man as the black male shouted a warning.

Gavin struggled to turn his eyes, the electrical pulses in his nerves made movement almost impossible. Gavin was stunned out of his rage momentarily by the group that had arrived. Principal Shepard stood there, eyes burning bright red in fury as a group of what seemed to be third-year students, including Stephanie from the welcome booth, and Bradley. "You will not harm my students. Not while I am here," Principal Shepard said. His voice had taken on a deep, almost demonic tone as he focused his mana and his form began to shift. After all this time, he would reveal his secret to the rest of his staff and students present. But it would be worth the cost to protect his only grandchild. As Principal Shepard shifted, blood-red fur manifested on his body. He stood there, in front of the other students and staff as he snarled at the man that held his grandson trapped.
Helena starred in open-mouthed shock as she took in the sight of the principal shifting into a blood-red werewolf. She noticed that one of his wolf's ears had been cut short because of a previous injury, and there were streaks of gray that were mixed in with the red fur. She was panting and heaving from the exhaustion of maintaining her werewolf form. Professor Jason rushed over to her as her mana reached zero and her body shifted back into her human state. She felt the stamina drain and the weakness as she dropped to her knees trying to catch her breath.
Professor Jason kept watch nearby and summoned a few stone walls around them to keep them safe from any stray fire as he watched on. He was surprised that the principal was a shifter. He had never told any of the staff. He grinned in anticipation as he watched the man take a few steps forward towards the blonde man.
Principal Shepard growled in fury as he moved, his body a blur as he grabbed the blonde man by the throat and lifted him up in the air. "If I heard you correctly, You've killed other wolves before. Watched them burn and die screaming," Principal Shepard's voice was deceptively calm as the man struggled in his grip, his pistol already knocked out of his hands by the red wolf.
He gasped for breath as he struggled against the fur-covered paw that lifted him effortlessly into the air. "Those were my family you slaughtered. I have been hunting for you for the past eighteen years. Now my family can finally rest in peace," Principal Shepard said as he used his right hand, which was free, and gripped the bottom of the mans jaw.
"Cedrion!" the black man called out in fear as he watched the scene unfold in front of him.
"Get off of me, you animal. How dare you touch me with your disgusting hands!" Cedrion screamed out in rage and fear as the wolf gripped the base of the man's jaw in his hand.
Principal Shepard said nothing as he dug his claws into the man's flesh and, with a surge of strength, ripped the man's head clean off his body. A fountain of blood erupted from the neck of the man as Principal Shepard raised the severed head high above his head and let out a howl of victory. The roar filled the area as all parties present froze at the display of feral intensity. The blood poured out of the severed head, drenching the Principal's fur as the last moments of fear and pain that filled the scarred man's face were permanently itched on it.
The black man, tears in his eyes, called for a full retreat as various smoke bombs went off around the arena from the other survivors. Helena watched in frustration as the men ran for the exits, laying down cover fire for their comrades as they went. The third-year students, and other teachers the principal had brought with him, worked together to summon a variety of stone walls to ensure they were protected from the hail of gunfire. Bradley rushed over and used his mana to throw a fireball at the device that held Gavin captive.
Bradley witnessed the strength of Gavin moments before they had arrived and knew how lucky he was to be alive. He could have slaughtered him earlier easily and decided to spare him. As far as Bradley was concerned, he had a debt to pay back. "I got you, Gavin," Bradley said as he grabbed onto the exhausted wolf, the blood on his body now staining Bradley's clothes, but he didn't mind.
The moment the device broke, Bradley grabbed onto Gavin as he crumpled to the floor, the electrical net instantly shut off. The effects of the Overdrive skill were now over and Gavin was dealing with the downsides of using the skill. His mana was beyond drained and his stamina was at zero. His wolf form began to dissolve, and he leaned against Bradley, covered in sweat and blood. He was barely able to stay conscious as he leaned against the other student.
Gavin's eyes grew heavy from exhaustion and pain as his mind registered all the various injuries he had accrued during the battle. The last thing Gavin saw was his grandfather throwing the head of the man to the side and issuing commands to the students and staff to secure the arena. Then everything went black.
