"What happened? Why do you look so beaten down?" Yami asked in worry as he stared at Finral, who stood in front of him, his clothes torn and blood staining parts of his skin.
"I ran into a little trouble back in town," Finral replied, rubbing the back of his hair slightly, his expression a mix of frustration and exhaustion.
"Trouble? You were trained by your father, who is a prodigy in Ki and could as well become a clan leader on his own, and you say you ran into trouble? What kind of trouble can put you in this condition?" Clarice asked, her voice tight with concern, a worried expression clouding her face.
"I faced off against a member of the Midnight Sun," Finral finally admitted with a heavy sigh, shoulders sagging as though the weight of that truth pressed down on him.
"You did what?!" Yami and Clarice asked in unison, shock evident as their eyes bulged wide, their bodies stiffening in disbelief.
"Then how are you alive?" Yami asked with a raised brow. "By my calculations, we should have been called to come take your body back by now."
"Wait, are you counting me out already?" Finral asked, one eyebrow arching in disbelief.
"I don’t want to," Yami admitted with a grunt. "But you faced off against the Midnight Sun. What do you expect me to say?"
"What happened? How did you run into them? How did you survive?" Clarice pressed, her voice growing more anxious. Finral took in a deep breath, steadying himself before answering.
Afterward, he recounted everything in detail. How he had seen a member of the Midnight Sun about to attack Millie, and without hesitation, he stepped in to protect her, engaging in battle to let Millie, Grey, and Vanessa escape safely.
He explained how the fight had pushed him to his limits and how he had been on the brink of death—until a higher-up from the clan intervened, saving his life and allowing him to leave peacefully.
"Wait! Millie was about to be attacked by the clan? Why?" Clarice asked, her face paling as panic started to creep in.
"I don’t know," Finral shrugged, shaking his head slowly. "I really don’t. They didn’t say."
"What did you go to do in town?" Yami asked next, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"Work," Finral said simply, offering no further context, his tone clipped and unreadable.
"Wait! You said the trio escaped. How are you back before them? Where are they?" Yami asked as a cold dread slowly filled his heart.
"Wait! You mean they aren’t back yet?" Finral’s face darkened, his own hands uncrossing as he stepped forward in worry.
"They aren’t back yet. Where are they?" Clarice asked, her voice trembling as the realization of the situation fully settled in her mind.
"Shit! We need to go find them now," Yami cursed as he dashed into the house, the sound of rummaging and muffled swearing echoing from inside.
Within five minutes, Yami reemerged. A katana was strapped securely to his waist, its blade sheathed, his expression deadly serious.
His usual laid-back air had vanished completely, replaced by that of a warrior ready for battle.
"Stay home. I’ll go look for them," Yami ordered as he stepped toward the door, his hand already reaching for the handle.
"No! Two of them are my sisters. It was my duty to protect and ensure their safety—and I failed. So I’m coming with you," Finral said, his tone resolute, eyes burning with determination.
"You’re injured. Stay back, rest, and heal," Yami replied, his voice steady, not even looking back as he prepared to leave.
"These are just external injuries, which will heal with time. But if something happens to Millie and Vanessa..." Finral paused, swallowing hard. "An internal injury that can never be healed will emerge. So please, Dad... let me come along," he pleaded, voice steady but filled with emotion.
Yami stared at him in silence for a brief moment before finally letting out a long sigh.
Sigh!
"Fine. Let’s go," Yami agreed, turning fully toward the door and swinging it open—
Only to freeze.
Right in front of the door stood a figure, hand raised mid-air, as if they had just been about to knock.
For a split second, silence hung heavy in the air, the tension so thick it could be cut with a blade.
While slightly behind him were two girls, both with weary and tired expressions on their faces.
"Mister Yami!" Grey called out weakly, his voice rough and strained as he saw Yami standing there with his sword in hand, a confused expression painted across his face.
"Dad!" Vanessa and Millie shouted in unison. Without wasting a moment, they bolted forward and wrapped Yami in a tight hug, their small frames pressing against him as though afraid he might disappear.
Yami knelt slightly, arms encircling them both, holding them close in silent relief.
"Dad, we need to save Brother Finral now. He is back at—" Millie’s sentence trailed off, her eyes suddenly widening in shock as an individual appeared from behind Yami.
"Finral?!" Vanessa said, her voice filled with disbelief as she stared hard at the person they had come running all this way to seek help for. "How?!"
"That’s not important right now," Yami quickly interjected, his tone calm but firm as his gaze shifted toward the injured ones, especially Grey, who looked like he was moments away from collapsing.
"I’m glad you’re all safe," Yami continued, voice gentler now, "and that you girls managed to protect Grey."
"Protect Grey?" Millie asked, stepping back with a raised eyebrow. "We didn’t protect him. Rather... he protected us."
"Huh?!" Yami and Finral said at once, surprise evident in both their voices and expressions.
"Yes, Dad," Vanessa added with a small nod. "We were ambushed by twelve clan members. I dealt with ten of them. Millie handled one. I was facing off against their leader when he knocked me down, leaving me unconscious."
Her voice wavered slightly, but she continued.
"He was about to hurt Millie when Grey stepped forward, even though he was obviously weak and frail.
He protected Millie even though it nearly cost him his life. He took huge blows she was supposed to sustain and, in the end... he somehow managed to surprisingly prevail against the man."
"Grey did all that?" Finral asked, brow raised in disbelief. "This Grey?" He pointed at the exhausted figure beside them—at Grey, who seemed utterly uninterested in what was being said, his face pale, his body swaying slightly from fatigue.
"Yes! Brother Grey is a superhero!" Millie shouted, her voice filled with cheerful glee as she clung to Grey’s arm with a bright smile.
"If you say he protected you both," Yami said as he stepped toward Grey, placing his hand firmly on Grey’s shoulder with a rare smile. "Then thank you for protecting my little girls. I’m glad I didn’t make the wrong choice by bringing you into our family."
"You actually made the wrong choice," Finral said suddenly, his voice low and tight with anger. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"What?" Yami asked, turning around slowly, a hint of confusion flickering in his eyes.
"It was because of him... we were even attacked. His red hair brought so much trouble for us," Finral growled under his breath, voice laced with frustration and resentment.
Yami’s gaze shifted back toward Grey. Spinning around slightly, he glanced up at Grey’s head—and that was when he noticed. Grey’s hat had fallen off, exposing his vibrant red hair for all to see.
"This is going to give me a headache soon," Yami mumbled as he rubbed his temples, already feeling the beginnings of stress building. "Let’s just head in and rest. We’ll figure out what to do later."
"Tsk!" Finral scoffed in anger as he marched inside first, his steps heavy with frustration, followed closely by the girls.
"Come on, Grey," Yami said, turning to walk away. But before he could take another step, he felt Grey’s hand grab onto his wrist, holding him back.
"Mister Yami, I want to ask a favor from you," Grey said, his voice steady despite how weak he looked.
That caused Yami to pause. He turned around slowly, his expression softening.
"I’m all ears. If it’s something I can do, I’ll do it," Yami replied with a warm, rare smile on his face.
"I want you to teach me Ki!" Grey declared, his voice filled with quiet but unmistakable determination. His tired eyes burned with resolve, even as his body trembled from exhaustion.
