Male Lead's Canon Fodder Wife-Chapter 1395: Rare Phone Call
Hearing her father's question, Su Lanying shook her head, and said, "Doctor Song is a good man with a bright future. If he marries me and our family's identity is exposed, it will harm him and his family. He's already done so much for me—how could I ruin his future?"
Meng Qiaoping let out a sigh and said, "Indeed, he is a good man. Unfortunately, our family doesn't have the fortune to accept him as a son-in-law."
After a moment, Su Lanying looked at her mother and said, "Mother, if I can recover from my illness, please help me find a good villager. I'm already sixteen."
"After I recover, I will be seventeen—it's time to get engaged. When the marriage preparation is complete, I will be eighteen and it's the right age for getting married."
"I don't ask for someone rich or good-looking. As long as he is willing to work hard and has an honest character, that's enough."
While Su Lide and Meng Qiaoping were relieved by Su Lanying's decision, Su Jian frowned. As a man, he understood how stubborn men could be when it came to feelings. But since his sister had already made up her mind, he could only swallow his words.
Not knowing that the person he was thinking about had only agreed to his words to make him give up, Song Yan was making a phone call to his family.
Since it was already late, he had to borrow the phone in the hospital director's office. To give him some privacy, the director stepped outside for a break.
Not long after, the call connected, and he heard his mother's gentle voice. "Hello?"
"Mother, it's me."
The moment Mother Song heard her son's voice, she was surprised and delighted.
"Son, why are you calling so suddenly? Are you doing well there? Do you need anything? Just tell Mother," she said.
"Mother, I'm doing very well. You and Father don't need to worry about me."
"Then why are you calling so suddenly?" she asked, puzzled.
It wasn't that she was unhappy to receive a call from her son, but since he became a doctor, he had basically been living at the hospital. Even when he was working in the capital, it was rare to hear from him, let alone see him.
After being sent to such a remote place, he had only called once to say he had arrived safely. So for him to call again now, it was natural for her to be confused.
After hesitating for a moment, Song Yan finally said, "Mother, I'm calling to inform you and Father that I plan to get married."
Upon hearing this, Mother Song was stunned. Thinking she had misheard, she asked, "What did you say?"
"Mother, I'm planning to get married," Song Yan repeated, his voice firmer this time.
It took Mother Song a few moments to process his words. Then she laughed and said, "Son, you are finally willing to get married! It's a blessing to our Song family!"
"Tell your mother, what kind of woman do you like? Mother will arrange it for you. When the time comes, you just need to meet her, and if you like her, Mother will arrange the wedding right away."
Hearing this, Song Yan said, "Mother, you don't have to trouble yourself. I have already found the woman I want to spend my life with."
Mother Song was stunned again. Then she recalled the news she had received from the hospital director—it seemed her son had a good relationship with a doctor named Gu Mengyao.
"Son, is she someone from the hospital? A doctor? Or a nurse?" she asked.
"She is not from the hospital," Song Yan replied.
"Then... is she one of your patients?" Mother Song asked again.
Thinking of Su Lanying—who was indeed one of his patients—Song Yan answered, "She is."
Mother Song frowned at that and asked, "How old is she? What does her family do?"
"Mother, does her family's job matter that much?" Song Yan asked, displeased.
"How can it not matter? You are a genius doctor with a bright future. Even if your future wife comes from an ordinary family, she should at least not become a burden," Mother Song said.
Hearing his mother's words, Song Yan knew it would be difficult to get his family's approval. He clenched his fists and said, "Mother, she is around sixteen years old, and her family are farmers."
"Farmers? Son, how could you—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Song Yan cut her off, "Mother, even if she comes from a farmer family, she is honest, hardworking, and talented. She is educated and calm. Most importantly, I like her."
"Mother, this is the first time I have fallen for someone. I don't know how deep my feelings for her are, but right now, I know I won't be able to like anyone else the way I like her."
"You said I'm a genius doctor. Even without help from my wife's family, I will still have a bright future. So I hope you won't look down on her just because she is from an ordinary family."
"Besides, farmers are not lowly. Without their hard work in the fields, would we even have food on the table? So Mother, please give her and her family the respect they deserve."
"As for our relationship, I didn't call to ask for your permission. I called to inform you and Father. Once I get her family's approval, I will let you know, so you can visit and formally propose. As for everything else, I can handle it myself."
Before his mother could say anything else, he added, "Mother, I have to go now. Please take care of your health."
The moment he finished his words, he hung up the call, not giving his mother a chance to speak at all.
Hearing the busy tone on the other end, Mother Song was left stunned. She was speechless at her son's rashness. Though she was angry with him, her anger was even greater toward the woman who had seduced her son.
All these years, her son had always listened to her. But now, he dared to talk back to her like this?
It seemed she would have to go there and take a look at that woman herself!
