Chapter 433: War of Words

[Damn, she’s bold... she even took grapes from Mr. Reid’s office.]

[Come on, she’s Mrs. Reid. You ever heard of married couple fun? You people know nothing.]

[And weren’t there rumors Mrs. Reid wasn’t favored, that Miss Nelson was the real future mistress? Look at that announcement Mr. Reid just sent out—he’s clearly calling Riley out for breaking the rules!]

The story of Riley barging up to the sixtieth floor without permission—and getting kicked back down by Selina—had spread through the entire company.

Everyone was guessing: was Mrs. Reid the real winner here, or was the childhood sweetheart more cunning?

Before anyone could decide, Logan sent that announcement.

It was an unmistakable slap in Riley’s face.

...

Selina walked to her desk. She could feel everyone staring. She lifted her head slightly, and in an instant they all looked away.

The group chat was buzzing.

[Pretty sure this is the lady of the house making rounds. We can’t treat Miss Clark like just another employee.]

[Of course...]

That message wasn’t even finished when someone suddenly stood up.

Stone, the assistant, walked straight over, every pair of eyes in the office widening in horror.

Selina was still thinking about that mysterious investor from ten years ago.

Someone who could drop five billion just like that wasn’t an ordinary man—and probably wasn’t young, either. Who could it have been?

She didn’t get far before someone blocked her view.

Selina looked up and recognized the man in his forties.

This was the Stone assistant Jack had warned her about.

She’d already noticed him earlier. When she told Riley to leave, Stone was the only one who’d looked at her with open disdain.

Now he was standing in front of her, eyes filled with scorn and irritation.

Selina’s voice was calm.

"Can I help you?"

BANG!

He dropped a massive stack of documents onto her desk.

"Have these sorted and back to me before you leave today."

Selina lifted an eyebrow.

Everyone could see there was no way this much paperwork could be finished by day’s end.

The office fell completely silent.

"Before I leave?" Selina flipped through the stack without rushing. Her voice was flat.

"Is this urgent?"

Stone sneered.

"Of course it’s urgent."

Selina let out a thoughtful "oh" and plucked one document at random.

"Ten-year-old startup strategy plans for Reid Group. Completely outdated. Assistant Stone, are you making a summary report?"

She picked up another.

"A market survey from five years ago... I’m pretty sure Logan scrapped this himself. What are you doing? Overruling the CEO?"

Stone’s face darkened.

"I told you to print it, so print it. Stop asking questions!"

Selina let out a sharp laugh.

"You’re handing me garbage to print and I’m not even allowed to ask why? Are you deliberately making trouble for me, or just begging to get cursed out?"

The secretary team lead hurried over and whispered nervously.

"Miss Clark, Assistant Stone has been with Mr. Reid for ten years. Maybe just let it go..."

Stone let out a mocking laugh.

"Ha. Some people want to suck up so bad they don’t even care who they’re sucking up to."

The team lead’s face fell.

Selina couldn’t help but be curious.

Why did it feel like this whole department was under Stone’s thumb—even the team lead didn’t dare talk back?

Stone looked down at her, smug and unbothered.

"Yeah, I dumped a pile of garbage on you. So what? You think I’d trust you with anything important? I don’t know why Mr. Reid insisted on hiring you as his assistant, but it sure as hell wasn’t for your skills."

Selina suddenly smiled.

She let the stack fall onto the desk with a sharp smack and stood up slowly, her voice low and ice-cold.

"Sounds like you have a lot of issues with me, Assistant Stone."

Stone had heard Logan was looking for a new assistant—and he’d recommended Riley.

He’d even given the Nelson family his word.

But the new assistant turned out not to be Riley, but Selina.

If it had been some highly qualified graduate, fine. But Selina hadn’t even finished college. Why the hell was she in such an important role?

Obviously she’d just whispered sweet nothings in Mr. Reid’s ear!

Stone sneered.

"Figures. Low-class nobody like you, sees Miss Nelson joining the company and just has to find a way in too. Maybe instead of scheming to get in here, you should spend that time learning how to land a man. Reid’s going to dump you eventually—you might as well line up your next one now."

The entire office went dead silent.

It was an open insult.

Selina lifted an eyebrow and studied Stone carefully.

Was this guy... mentally ill?

At the very least, she was still Mrs. Reid. They were legally married.

Even someone like Scott wouldn’t dare insult her so directly.

And Stone was just an assistant—even with ten years at Logan’s side, what gave him the right to say something like that and expect Logan to tolerate it?

"Such an interesting tone you have, Assistant Stone." Selina smiled lazily. "Are you... jealous of me?"

Everyone: "...?"

Selina rested her chin in her hand and let her smile widen slowly.

"It’s so weird. I was hired because Logan asked me to be here. What does that have to do with Riley? You’re standing here accusing me of sleeping my way to the job—are you standing up for Riley, or are you just jealous?"

Everyone: "..."

Holy shit.

Stone’s face went red with rage. He hadn’t expected Selina to be so shameless.

"Y-You—"

"I heard Miss Nelson actually wanted this assistant job herself. And you were the one who put her name forward, right?"

Selina tilted her head, pretending to think.

"Hmm. Could it be you two had some kind of deal? And now that it didn’t work out, you’re throwing a tantrum?"

"Bullshit! This has nothing to do with Miss Nelson!" Stone roared. "I just can’t stand watching someone as useless as you steal someone else’s spot!"

Selina nodded slowly.

"Oh, so it’s got nothing to do with Miss Nelson. Got it. So you’re just plain old jealous of me."

She let her voice drip with mock sympathy.

"After all, you’ve been at this for ten years to get where you are. And here I am, parachuted in out of nowhere. Must really eat you up inside. Maybe you hate that you’re a man, that you’re not pretty enough to seduce Logan. Is that it? Is that why you resent me so much?"

The secretary team lead was red in the face trying not to laugh.

Others couldn’t hold it back.

"Pfft—"

"Ahaha..."

Everyone knew Selina was Logan’s personal choice.

And with how obvious Mr. Reid and Mrs. Reid’s relationship was—Logan, Jaxon, Jack had all accepted her without question.

Who the hell was Stone to be "offended" on Riley’s behalf?

Clearly, he’d just taken the Nelson family’s money and failed to deliver Riley into the company, and now he was trying to dress it up as righteous indignation.

Though they had to admit—this Mrs. Reid had a fiery temper. Nothing like those fake-polite debutantes.

Stone’s face was black with fury.

"Fine. Fine! Let’s see how long you can keep up this arrogant act, you little whore!"

Selina just smiled.

"Relax. I’ll keep it up way longer than you."

She stood up, brushing him off entirely.

Stone’s voice rose even higher.

"Who the hell do you think you are?! Where do you think you’re going—I’m still talking to you!"

Selina glanced back over her shoulder, her smile turning sly.

"Assistant Stone, you did call me a whore, didn’t you?"

She smoothed her hair back, lips curling.

"Well then. This ’whore’ is off to tattle."

"Good luck, Assistant Stone."
