Married To The Mad Vampire Lord-Chapter 215: Maintain
Chapter 215: Maintain
His wife was not a vampire, and the child she carried was part a creature that fed on blood. The doctor had mentioned that she was weak and wasn’t eating properly, but the right words were—she wasn’t taking blood that the child needed.
This was part of the reasons why he had been so worried learning about her pregnancy now. They were in a land where they could not just get access to blood supplies or hunt down humans too often. Compelling a human was easy to take their blood, and as safe as it might be, it wasn’t entirely safe, as their bite leaves a mark on the human, and if another human were to see the mark, they would realize it was done by a vampire.
She needed a constant supply of blood in this condition, and the more the child grew inside her, the more blood it would need.
If they were in Nightbrook, he knew he wouldn’t have to worry about getting blood from any random human, as no law could hold it against him. It was different here.
But that aside, he could not let his wife know that he had fed her blood in her medicine last night to test his theory when she woke up in pain.
He had gone to get the blood from one of the human servants in the house and put it in the medicine, and immediately she took it—though she had grimaced and gagged like she would vomit at the strange taste—the pain had instantly subsided, and she had slept all through the night like a baby. Even this morning, he had slipped away from her side, disentangled his limbs from hers without her stirring. freeweɓnovel~cѳm
He had sent for Rav to meet him and had told him to get the blood and informed him of the plan. Now, after Rav had gotten the blood she would take this morning ready and stored, he had come to tell the master.
After they talked about how to make sure she takes the blood mix everyday, they remained silent outside the house, both of them lost in silent thoughts, until Rav broke the silence first.
"About what you told me a few days ago," Rav said, referring to the day Rohan had first woken up and come to him asking about everything that had happened. After Rav had filled him in on all that occurred during the time he was unconscious, Rohan had declared that he would return to Nightbrook and leave his wife here while he took revenge on every single one of those people.
"Do you still plan to do that now?"
Rohan’s hand, which had been reaching up to bring the cigar to his lips, froze mid-air at that question. Slowly, he lowered it, his gaze drifting upward toward the gloomy winter morning sky, and then he replied to Rav,
"That plan was made before I knew my wife was pregnant. It has to change now. I can’t go after King Zion and the rest while she is in this condition where she would need me by her side. Not until the baby is born—I will have to stay here."
"What about the wealth, my Lord? I don’t want to bring this up now, but since we will be staying here longer until she has given birth, the money here cannot take us that long. Most of your documents and gold are in the castle in Nightbrook. We had left unprepared, and the ones here are the ones you put in the lady’s name. To manage it, we will have to cut down on massive expenses and reduce the staff in the manor—and by doing that, it will mean we won’t have people to take blood from."
Rav had kept this worrisome news to himself, thinking there was no need to bring up the fact that the wealth here was only a quarter of what Rohan owned—because he believed the master still intended to leave, and that before they went bankrupt, he would have already secured everything back there.
But now that the master couldn’t leave, Rav no longer thought it wise to keep quiet, especially knowing how extravagant Rohan was when it came to spending on his wife—buying her unnecessarily expensive attires and things she didn’t particularly need. If he continued like that here, he would run out of money before she gave birth and he could return to reclaim all that he owned.
Rohan’s fist clenched around his cigar until he crushed it in his gloved palm. This was the main reason he did not want to waste time in taking the throne. He did not want to have to live a life where he would be managing things when he could give his wife more.
His wealth in Nightbrook could take care of his next four generations without him having to work a day, but he did not believe everything would be kept as he had left it when the king was now onto him.
The only way out was by taking the throne. He would not settle for a duke anymore, but the plan of taking the throne too would have to wait for now. His wife’s life was more important than that.
"I will maintain my spending, if that’s what you are trying to tell me," Rohan said with a displeased growl. He hated maintaining, but he had to do that. "There’s no need to reduce the staff—we need the blood supplies that come from them every day."
Rav sighed in relief, utterly glad that the master understood him clearly. It wasn’t that the money the master had here wasn’t enough, in fact, it was more than sufficient for someone who wasn’t used to having it all, but his lordship was a man who spent extravagantly. And ever since he had married the human, his spending had increased more than usual because he never failed to buy one thing or another each day.
Rav was the one in charge of the household finances, and from what was left, he knew his lordship would need to start spending with caution.
He then added, "Now that we’re talking about the staff—Ben came yesterday afternoon, demanding to see the lady."
Rohan’s head tilted toward Rav at those words. "I thought I said you should dismiss him from the work?"
"I did. In fact, I offered to pay him a full wage for the month, even though he had only worked for some weeks into the month, but he refused to take it and said it wasn’t done like that in Bimmerville. He said something about how workers needed to be given notice before they are fired so they could look for work elsewhere. He refused to leave yesterday until I ignored him, but he said he would come by again."
"And why didn’t you just compel the fucker?" Rohan asked, arching a brow. Humans were easily manipulated—it was normal for vampires to compel any human who might cause them stress. Just like this Ben, whom Rohan had disliked from the very first day he met him.
Rav laughed nervously. "I tried, my Lord. The man was all over the place—he wouldn’t stand still long enough to look into my eyes. He talks nonstop, every second, and kept pacing around so much that I couldn’t get him to hold still to compel him. And worse, many of the servants and even the neighbors came out to see who was causing all the commotion. If I had compelled him there, I’d have had to go around compelling everyone else who witnessed it—servants, neighbors, even those peeking through their house windows into the yard. It would’ve been impossible to erase every single person’s memory."
Yesterday, after they returned from the inn and the lady had fallen asleep, and his Lordship had gone out, Ben had shown up, demanding to see Mrs. Cutter, the false name Rohan had used when purchasing the house.
It had taken a great deal of effort to get him off the property, but there was no telling he wouldn’t return again, especially if he failed to secure another job elsewhere.
The man was not only annoying but talkative, and it was exhausting to be around him. It was hard to get him to be in a relaxed manner long enough to be compelled. The last thing Rav wanted was for him to keep coming and bringing the attention of the neighborhood like he did yesterday.
