Married To The Ruthless Billionaire For Revenge-Chapter 68: When The World Breaks Quietly
Chapter 68 — WHEN THE WORLD BREAKS QUIETLY
Elena didn’t remember leaving the room.
She didn’t remember how she crossed the corridor, how the heavy steel door slid shut behind her, or how her feet carried her through the mansion she had once thought of as a place of safety. All she knew was the roaring in her ears, the crushing pressure in her chest, and the single sentence replaying over and over in her mind like a curse.
Your father is alive.
Your father destroyed my family.
Her hands were trembling violently by the time she reached the bedroom. She pressed her palm against the doorframe, breathing hard, as though the air itself had turned against her. The walls felt closer, the ceiling lower, the entire world suddenly unfamiliar.
Her father.
The man whose grave she cried over.
The man whose photograph she still kept hidden away.
The man she had believed died a victim.
Alive.
And not just alive—but powerful enough to ruin the Kane family, to orchestrate destruction from the shadows, to twist lives like pieces on a board.
Elena staggered to the edge of the bed and sank down, gripping the sheets as if they were the only thing keeping her from falling apart completely. Her chest burned. Her vision blurred.
"No..." she whispered. "No... this isn’t real."
Memories assaulted her without mercy.
Her father’s voice when she was younger—calm, firm, always in control. The way he spoke about loyalty, about sacrifice, about doing what must be done even when it hurt. At the time, she thought it was wisdom.
Now, every word felt poisoned.
The door opened quietly behind her.
Adrian stepped inside, slow and careful, as if approaching a wild animal that might bolt or break at the wrong movement. His face was pale, jaw tight, eyes dark with guilt and fear.
"Elena," he said softly.
She didn’t turn around.
"How long did you know?" Her voice was frighteningly calm.
Adrian stopped a few steps behind her. "Not long," he answered honestly. "I suspected something years ago. But I didn’t have proof until recently."
She laughed—a broken, hollow sound. "Recently," she repeated. "And you still married me."
Silence stretched between them.
"Yes," Adrian said quietly. "I did."
She stood abruptly and turned to face him, her eyes burning. "Was any of it real? Or was I just another move in your war?"
Adrian flinched. Not because she raised her voice—but because she didn’t.
"Elena," he said, voice low, urgent, "what we have is real. I swear it."
"You swore a lot of things," she shot back. "You swore to protect me. You swore to be honest."
"I was protecting you," he said. "From the truth I wasn’t ready to confirm."
"And who protected me from you?" she demanded.
The words hung in the air like a slap.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly, pain cutting across his features. "I never meant to hurt you."
"But you did," Elena whispered. "You married me knowing my life was connected to a man you wanted destroyed."
Adrian stepped closer, desperation breaking through his controlled exterior. "I married you because I needed answers, yes. But somewhere along the way, it stopped being about revenge."
She shook her head, tears finally spilling. "You don’t get to decide when that matters."
Her knees weakened, and she sank back onto the bed, covering her face with her hands. The weight of betrayal pressed down on her until it felt impossible to breathe.
"My whole life," she sobbed, "I thought I was running from a tragedy. And now you’re telling me I was born into a lie."
Adrian moved to her side slowly and knelt in front of her. He didn’t touch her—not yet. "Your father didn’t just destroy my family," he said carefully. "He destroyed his own."
She looked at him sharply. "Explain."
"Years ago," Adrian began, voice heavy, "there was a consortium—powerful men working behind closed doors. Your father was one of them. So was Victor Hale. So was my father."
Elena’s breath hitched at the name.
"Victor Hale was blamed for everything when the deal went wrong," Adrian continued. "But the truth is... your father designed the fall. He manipulated the numbers, leaked information, turned allies into enemies."
"And my parents’ accident?" Elena whispered.
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "I don’t know yet. But I believe your mother tried to leave him. And when she did... things spiraled."
Elena felt sick.
"My mother wouldn’t—"
"She would," Adrian said gently. "To protect you."
The realization crashed into her like a wave.
Her mother hadn’t died in an accident.
She had tried to escape.
Elena pressed her hand to her mouth, shaking violently.
Adrian reached out now, carefully wrapping his fingers around her wrist. "Elena, listen to me. Whatever your father did—whatever he became—that doesn’t define you."
"But it defines how you see me," she said bitterly.
He shook his head fiercely. "No. It defines why I will protect you even if it costs me everything."
She pulled her hand away, standing again. "I don’t know who I can trust anymore."
"You can trust me," Adrian said, standing with her. "Even if you don’t forgive me yet."
Her eyes searched his face—this man who had broken her heart and yet still looked at her like she was his entire world.
"Is my father looking for me?" she asked quietly.
"Yes," Adrian admitted.
Her breath caught. "Why?"
"Because you’re leverage," he said. "And because you’re the one thing he never completely controlled."
Elena laughed weakly. "How ironic."
Outside, thunder rolled faintly in the distance.
She walked to the window and stared out at the dark estate grounds. For the first time since marrying Adrian, she felt truly exposed—like prey standing under open sky.
"What happens now?" she asked.
Adrian stepped behind her but kept a respectful distance. "Now we prepare. Your father won’t stay hidden forever. And when he comes..."
He paused.
"I need to know you’re with me."
Elena closed her eyes.
She thought of the girl she used to be—naïve, trusting, broken by loss. She thought of everything she had survived, everything she had endured.
Then she opened her eyes. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"I won’t run," she said. "But I won’t be used either."
Adrian nodded once. "That’s fair."
She turned to him, voice steady despite the storm inside her. "If my father is the enemy... then I want the truth. All of it. No more secrets."
Adrian met her gaze, solemn. "Then we face him together."
Elena inhaled deeply.
The world she knew was gone.
But if war was coming—
she would not be a pawn.
She would be ready.
