Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Last Night, Something Shady Happened! (1)

Seraphina stood outside the door like a statue, frozen as she watched the couple embracing intimately in the living room.

It took her a full five seconds to come back to her senses.

Carrying Chloe’s bag, Seraphina turned and stepped down the stairs.

At first, she walked, but then she just started running.

She sprinted all the way back to the Thorne Villa.

She bent over, gasping for breath.

The scene she just witnessed replayed over and over in her mind.

Her chest churned violently, and Seraphina rushed into the bathroom, gripping the sink as bile rose in her throat.

After spitting out some acidic water, she grabbed a cup to rinse her mouth, but drank too hastily, causing the water to choke her.

Seraphina coughed violently, her chest aching, and tears welled up in her eyes.

After a long while, she managed to suppress the coughing, supporting herself against the sink as she straightened up.

She splashed cold water on her face, pressing against her still-stinging stomach, then sat weakly on the toilet.

...

...

Foster Villa.

Ethan Sterling pulled Chloe’s arms from around him and stepped back.

"Don’t move, I’ll call for an ambulance right now."

"No need," Chloe laughed, "I just fell, it’s not that serious."

"But what if there’s something wrong with your bone? It could be a problem."

Chloe used the sofa armrest to stand up, "Look, I’m fine. Didn’t you have plans to watch a movie with Seraphina? Go ahead, I’m alright!"

Ethan glanced at her still-bleeding knee, feeling a bit guilty.

She had helped him kindly, and ended up like this; he couldn’t just leave like this.

"No, I should still take you to the hospital to get checked, just in case."

"But what if Seraphina misunderstands? What then?"

"No, Seraphina’s not that petty." Ethan turned to get a coat for her, draping it over her shoulders, "Let’s go!"

Helping Chloe into the car, Ethan sat in the driver’s seat and started the car, driving towards the villa exit.

Chloe glanced at the Thorne Villa by the roadside.

"Ethan, you should still let Seraphina know. I don’t want to affect your relationship because of me."

"Alright, I’ll give her a call."

Ethan took out his phone, but Chloe reached over and grabbed it.

"Seraphina is probably just off work and driving home. Aren’t you worried about calling her now? Let me send her a message on WeChat instead."

Putting Ethan’s phone into her coat pocket, Chloe took out her own phone, opened WeChat, and spoke into it.

"Seraphina, this is Chloe. Sorry, but I need to borrow Ethan for a while. I accidentally fell and have to trouble him to take me to the hospital. Please don’t be upset!"

Locking her phone, Chloe turned to Ethan with a wink.

"Now you don’t have to worry about your wife being jealous!"

Ethan smiled as he drove out of the villa gates.

How was he to know that the message Chloe just composed never got sent?

Leaning back in the seat with her phone in hand, Chloe lowered her long eyelashes and gave a cool smile.

After bringing Chloe to the hospital, Ethan stayed with her as her wounds were treated. Once the CT scan confirmed it was just minor injuries, he finally relaxed.

As they left the hospital, passing a restaurant near the ring road, Ethan pulled over.

"Wait here, I’ll get you some dinner."

Seraphina’s favorite dish is from this restaurant.

He had planned to watch a movie with her tonight, but since it didn’t happen, he wanted to buy some of her favorite dishes as compensation.

Opening the car door, he quickly walked into the restaurant.

When he returned, he was carrying two large paper bags.

"Looks like you didn’t buy this for me, but for Seraphina, right?" Chloe asked with a smile.

"She loves this place’s food." Ethan lifted his right hand, "Of course, there’s something for you too."

Chloe smiled back but said nothing.

Ethan restarted the car and took her back to the Foster Villa.

"I know you’re eager to get back to your wife." Chloe took the dinner from his hands voluntarily, "Go on, I can manage myself."

"Alright, I’ll head back first. If you feel unwell, call me."

He waved goodbye before driving back to the Thorne Estate.

He brought the specially purchased dinner for Seraphina into the living room and set the food on the table before heading to the stairs.

"Honey, see what delicious food I brought back?"

Upstairs, there was no response.

Ethan went up to the master bedroom and pushed the door open.

Sighting Seraphina at the window, diligently polishing her violin, he walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.

"I know it was my fault today; I shouldn’t have canceled. I’m sorry."

Seraphina put down the violin and gently pushed his hands away.

"It’s okay."

Ethan turned to check her expression.

"Are you mad?"

Seraphina shook her head lightly.

"No."

"I knew it; my wife isn’t so petty." Ethan kissed her cheek, "Come on, I bought your favorite dishes, let’s go downstairs and eat."

Seraphina turned around, gazing at his face.

The face was so familiar, yet so foreign.

She was truly foolish!

Falling for Adrian Chamberlain’s deceit once hadn’t been enough for her; how could she trust Ethan so easily again?

Her hands, which hung at her sides, tightened and then relaxed.

Seraphina mustered a smile.

"I got a bit hungry earlier, so I’ve already eaten. Don’t worry about me. I’ll go practice now."

Taking her violin from the table, she turned to the window.

"Honey." Ethan noticed her slightly unnatural expression, concerned as he placed a hand on her shoulder, "You don’t look well; are you alright?"

"I do?" Seraphina touched her face, lowering her eyelashes to hide her disappointment, "Maybe... I’ve been a bit tired lately."

Ethan looked at her with concern, "I know you want to make up for the regret of your last competition, but your health is the most important thing, okay?"

"Mhm." Seraphina nodded slightly, "I know."

"Should I make you a cup of hot chocolate?"

"I’ve eaten too much dinner; I can’t have any more. Let’s skip it."

Gently pushing his arm away, Seraphina went to the window with her violin, and began to play earnestly.

Knowing she’d been focused on preparing for the competition, Ethan, although concerned, refrained from disturbing her further.

He knew that dropping out had been a regret in Seraphina’s life, and he hoped she could amend that regret.

For the competition, there wasn’t much he could do to help her.

All he could do now was to find evidence in favor of Caleb Thorne as soon as possible.

Going downstairs, he prepared a cup of hot chocolate and left it on the table before quietly exiting the room, closing the door behind him.

Listening to the sound of the door closing behind her.

Seraphina’s fingers trembled slightly on the bow, resulting in a wrong note.

After calming herself, she placed the bow back on the strings, focusing intently on her practice, trying to cast aside all distracting thoughts.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard she tried, or how convincing her facade was, she couldn’t hide her inner sense of disappointment and heartache.

With her mind in turmoil, Seraphina couldn’t concentrate, making mistakes repeatedly until she finally lowered her hands helplessly.

Clenching her lips, she placed the violin back on the table.

Seraphina couldn’t suppress herself any longer, and stepped outside the room.

Last time, she made a mistake.

Perhaps, this time, she had misunderstood?

Maybe there was another reason Ethan went to Chloe?

...

Tonight, she had to confront Ethan and get the truth.

What exactly was going on between him and Chloe?
