Mercenary's War-Chapter 40 - The Revenge Begins
40: Chapter 40 The Revenge Begins
40 -40 The Revenge Begins
Gao Yang wasn’t a hero capable of charging in and out of an enemy army of a million, nor was he the kind of hero who’d risk his life for an acquaintance he’d met only once.
The only reason he had decided on the spot to stay and take revenge for Fedor and Malik’s deaths was that Gao Yang had been foolhardy again.
Gao Yang was always the type to act impulsively without regard for anything else, or he wouldn’t have come to Africa.
Spending all his savings just to play with guns in Africa was something only an abnormal person would do.
Sitting in the car, Gao Yang just blankly stared out the window.
As the hot-headedness subsided and he calmed down, to say he didn’t regret it would be a lie.
The people who could remain resolute in the face of life and death weren’t the likes of Gao Yang—they were saints.
Even though he felt some regret, it was utterly impossible for Gao Yang to give up on avenging Fedor and Malik.
He was just having a moment of hesitation.
Noticing Gao Yang’s silence, Cui Bo nudged him with his leg and asked, “Brother Yang, feeling regret?”
Without turning his head, Gao Yang replied, “A bit.”
“Sorry, you know that’s just the way I am, sometimes a bit foolish.
But I shouldn’t have dragged you into this.
I still have a brother, but you’re an only child.
Your family hasn’t seen you for three years; they must think you’re dead.
If you returned, how happy your parents would be!
Yet, I got you involved on a whim.”
Finally turning around, Gao Yang stared at Cui Bo for a while.
Just as Cui Bo began to grow uneasy under Gao Yang’s gaze, Gao Yang slapped the top of Cui Bo’s head.
“You idiot, haven’t you known me long enough to know what I’m like? freёwebnoѵel.com
If I weren’t as foolhardy as you, would I keep hanging out with a knucklehead like you?
Dumbass!
Let me tell you, this has nothing to do with you.
I just need to take revenge for Fedor.
Damn it, is there a conflict between thinking of home and looking for a showdown?
Is there?
You idiot.”
Having been slapped by Gao Yang and scolded, Cui Bo wasn’t angry; instead, he laughed and said, “It’s good that you don’t blame me.
Honestly, if you hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have had much confidence; I was planning to snipe at them from a distance and get as many as I could.
Now that we’re together, those opposition forces are nothing.
We’ll take care of them tonight.
Hehe, the main thing is, knowing you’re not dragged down by me makes me feel a lot better.
That way, if you die, I won’t feel too guilty, right?”
Hearing Cui Bo’s words, Gao Yang was so annoyed he gave him two fierce slaps on the head.
“You dead-brained Rabbit, can’t you say anything auspicious?
You’ve got such bad luck; I’m not going to die, and even if you die, I won’t.
Say something lucky, quick!”
Cui Bo was indeed prone to foolishness, something Gao Yang had known for years.
So when he talked to Cui Bo, he’d call himself ‘brother’ when he was happy and ‘I’ when he was mad.
Cui Bo also knew he often said stupid things, so he was accustomed to Gao Yang’s verbal and physical assaults.
“Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey, children’s words carry no harm, may the winds blow them away.
We shall definitely be safe, with thrills but no dangers, ah no, with no thrills and no dangers, achieving swift success, and wipe out those sons of bitches.”
Gao Yang laughed in spite of himself at Cui Bo’s response, shaking his head helplessly, “You jackass, I’m really done with you.
Look where we are; if we’re not far, we should get off soon.”
The vehicle that Gao Yang and the others were in was the opposition’s transport to the airport.
The driver, unaware of what Gao Yang and his companions were up to, had brought them back.
But Gao Yang didn’t want to drive straight to Fedor’s shop, as that would cause too much commotion.
Peering outside, Cui Bo said, “We’re almost there, a ten-minute walk.
Let’s get off here.”
After signaling the driver to stop, the three of them got out and watched the car drive away before gearing up and cautiously heading toward their destination.
Gao Yang hadn’t decided when to initiate the attack, but they needed to understand the situation first.
At the very least, they had to know who their enemy was, so he had decided to come back overnight.
Since it was night and they expected close combat, the sniper rifles carried by him and Cui Bo were of no use.
Both men had their sniper rifles slung on their backs, with Gao Yang holding his shotgun and Cui Bo an M4.
The three men kept a distance of ten meters between them as they rapidly advanced toward their target.
In Benghazi at night, gunshots echoed everywhere, but there were no visible battles.
Surprisingly, despite the chaos in the city, the streetlights were still on.
The difference from usual was that there were no pedestrians on the streets, making it eerily empty.
They hadn’t gone far before turning onto the small street where the shop was located.
This street had no streetlights to begin with, and there were no lights on inside the houses on either side, cloaking the street in total darkness.
Upon reaching the end of the street, Rabbit, who was leading, raised his right hand and signaled a halt, waiting for Gao Yang and the others to quickly gather before crouching in a dark corner.
In a low voice, Cui Bo said, “Less than three hundred meters ahead and we’re there.
We can’t see anything from here.
Let’s put on the night vision goggles.”
Transitioning from a bright area to darkness blinds you temporarily, but after adjusting within the dark for a while, Gao Yang and his companions could make out objects nearby.
However, they found it difficult to operate in such conditions, and Gao Yang felt it was indeed necessary to use their night vision goggles.
Gao Yang had a helmet-mounted night vision device in their possession, and it was just the time to put it to good use, while the infrared scope on Gao Yang’s rifle was of little use in close combat due to its narrow field of view.
The night vision device was hung on Cui Bo’s backpack, and as Cui Bo took it off, Gao Yang reached out to take it, whispering, “I’ll take point, you cover me.”
Cui Bo whispered back, “No, let me take point, and you cover me.
You’re an only child.”
The point man faced the greatest danger, leading the way and being the first to charge in an attack, which of course was the most dangerous position.
Gao Yang didn’t swear at Cui Bo, he just whispered, “Fine, you be the point man.
Come on, take off your glasses and put on the night vision device.”
Gao Yang’s words immediately deflated Cui Bo.
Cui Bo’s eyes were his eternal pain, both were five hundred degree near-sighted, and without his glasses at night, he was blind as a bat.
But with glasses on, he simply couldn’t wear the night vision device.
Cui Bo immediately wilted and fell silent, while Gao Yang, after putting on the night vision device, ultimately couldn’t resist the urge to say something.
“Think before you speak next time, why would a near-sighted guy grab the night vision device.”
Cui Bo, struck by the comment, let out a long sigh, filled with sadness and helplessness.
After switching on the night vision device, Gao Yang immediately saw a greenish image before his left eye.
The streets were deserted and appeared safe.
Gao Yang touched the Shotgun shells on his tactical vest and then drew his pistol from his thigh, flipping off the safety.
The 1911 was an old model, capable only of single-action firing, which meant that it couldn’t just shoot by pulling the trigger after releasing the safety, like modern pistols.
Instead, one had to cock the hammer by pulling back the slide.
Gao Yang chambered a round and cocked the hammer, flipping off the safety and preparing to fire at any moment.
Then he placed the pistol back in its holster, fitting the holster’s strap between the hammer and the frame to ensure the gun wouldn’t discharge accidentally but could still be fired immediately upon drawing.
Once all preparations were made, Gao Yang whispered “move out” and slowly took a few steps forward.
Cui Bo and Glolov followed behind him, the three of them forming a triangle formation as they advanced quickly.
As they approached Fedor’s shop front, Gao Yang halted.
Fedor and Malik’s bodies hung at the entrance, their necks looped with ropes dangling from the shutter door.
The corpses were covered with dried bloodstains and knife wounds all over, and the agonized and fearful distortion on their faces told of their extreme suffering as they died.
Gao Yang’s fury exploded in an instant, and all he wanted now was to find the culprits and blow them to pieces.
The shop door was wide open, not closed.
Gao Yang was familiar with the interior layout of the shop.
He slowly approached the entrance and peered inside for a moment.
The shop was a mess, but not emptied out, which surprised Gao Yang.
He had expected it to be completely looted.
After checking that the first floor was clear, Gao Yang made a hand signal to Cui Bo and Glolov, indicating no one was downstairs.
Then, moving closer to them, he whispered, “No one on the first floor, but it seems like there are people talking on the second floor.
Let’s go check it out.
Be careful, the floor is cluttered.
Follow my footsteps.”
Gao Yang had to repeat the same instructions twice as Cui Bo didn’t understand English, and obviously, Glolov didn’t understand Chinese.
After briefing them, Gao Yang led the way to the stairs, moving quietly.
When Cui Bo and Glolov were in position, Gao Yang took a deep breath, readied his Shotgun, and began ascending the stairs with caution.
Gao Yang tried not to make any noise, and upon reaching the second floor, he saw light coming from the crack under the doors of Fedor and Malik’s bedrooms.
It seemed both rooms were occupied, and Gao Yang could also hear voices from within.
Gao Yang paused for a moment and waited for Cui Bo and Glolov to join him.
Then he gestured, indicating that he and Cui Bo should each storm into a room, while Glolov would stay at the doorway, ready to support whoever faced difficulty.
Once the assignments were clear, Gao Yang took another deep breath, raised his hand, signaling readiness for the assault.
After dropping his hand, Gao Yang burst forward.
He had chosen Malik’s room, which sounded as if it had more people inside.
No need to worry about noise now, Gao Yang rushed to the door and kicked it open.
