Chapter 443 The Assassin

Alex wanted to interrogate, strike a deal, or whatever it took to gain the information he needed from Evangeline, but he knew he couldn't do so at the moment and could only watch her vanish before she even left his tent.

Alex knew that Ahrimon had something planned that would take out 80% of the inhabitants of the human continent, and the only real clue as to what could cause it was the Chaos Spawns.

But Alex knew that Ahrimon would know that it would be easy for him to find the movement of the Demonic cult, and if he was planning something with them, he would be more cautious.

So, for the time being, the only hope Alex had was the Human Emperor, who should be regaining consciousness in a few months because it was already close to the fourth month since his treatment began.

While he wanted to learn what Evangeline knew, Alex decided it was best to wait for the Emperor to wake up and not get involved with someone who could very well be working for the demons and was just a pawn for Ahrimon to manipulate him once again.

But Alex was not against contacting Evangeline by accepting her friend request, and as for giving his identity, he didn't need to worry about it, but to stay extra safe, he could simply use a system wish to bend the rules to his desire.

Alex spent some time thinking of the situation, remembering anything he could about Evangeline, her team members, and even people associated with her in his previous life, knowing he would go to any lengths to save the human continent from the looming disaster.

After some time, one of the captains entered the tent, bringing with him the news of immediate work that they needed to handle.

"Sir Captain, Fort Valor will be under siege in two to three hours by a Major General and regiments of four thousand soldiers strong, and we, Major Varriz, have decided that you will lead the men under your command as reinforcement," The captain explained after soluting, his voice laced with urgency.

"What's the situation?" Alex replied promptly, his tone reflecting his readiness for action.

"The routes are covered by the war bands of Grimmarsh kingdom army and their hired desert bandits, who stand ready to ambush and stop anyone from reaching, so reaching the fortress wouldn't be without losses," The captain elaborated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

"While there will be losses on our side, swift action is crucial to saving the Fort Valor's because, without assistance, it will fall in under a few hours and become a stronghold for Grimmarsh kingdom army, allowing them to build a supply line to conquer more of our land," The captain concluded, his voice resolute.

"Captain, prepare the soldiers to march. I will be with you in a few minutes," Alex said before he began analyzing the map.

The orders were to assist the fortress in its defense, but from the system quest, Alex knew it was not as easy as reaching the fortress and working with the others to push back the enemy because the quest had two objectives, the first being reaching the fortress in two hours, and then providing assistance to secure the fortress.

The first object alone was hard because the opposing army had tens of war bands spread out through the surroundings, prepared to ambush any reinforcements.

So Alex needed to think outside the box to reach the place in time and earn a decent reward for his successful assistance in saving the fortress.

The easiest and most logical way was to separate his regiment into small groups and rush to the battlefield, hoping that a decent number of his men would reach the fortress in time because pushing through with brute force was going to cost heavy losses. f(r)eewebn(o)vel.com

However, this method was also not the best because, at best, half of his four hundred or so men would reach the fortress, cutting his manpower in half, and to incur minimal losses and be of most help, Alex would need the majority of his regiment.

So, after some thinking, Alex decided it was best to create small groups of elites, consisting of ten or so men, giving each member invisibility, mana suppression potions, and sleep bombs from the event shop and making them carve a safe path for the rest of his regiment.

The method would cost him close to half a million points, but it would ensure the safety of his men, and it was also a small price to pay, especially when the quest reward was two million points, something not normal for just providing assistance to secure the fortress.

So, it made Alex reach the conclusion that Fort Valor was given up and no Peak Elementalist was coming to deal with the enemy Major leading the siege.

But as both Chrono Sanctuary and Dragon Might skills were off cooldown, he was pleased to put on a show and earn a decent sum of points.

(Ravyn POV)

'This makes it seven,' Ravyn thought, standing among the crowd of soldiers looking at the corpse of a captain with his skin turned dark, a clear sign of poison.

Ravyn was in one of the three war camps of the Grimmarsh kingdom, disguised as a soldier, and he came here with a group of sixteen individuals, all of whom had the simple mission of taking out seven specific targets.

In the two and half days he had spent in the camp, four of his companions had been caught and executed, and he had seen the execution of at least seventeen more assassins sent by nobles of Dawnvale kingdom.

Ravyn had spent the majority of his life as an assassin, trained from a young age by old masters who had killed countless targets but did so under a strict code of honor.

Ravyn was a seasoned assassin and was ingrained with ways to find the best method with the least or no risk to his life, therefore his approach to the quest was also different than his accomplice.

He was given the target to gather intel on two of seven targets, the first being the Head Healer and the other being one Major Captain whose rank was much lower than others, but he was the Crown prince of the Grimmarsh kingdom.

While the rest of the Five targets were high-profile individuals in the army, therefore they were protected, and while the plan of his accomplice was decent, Ravyn trusted his own plan more, so he was working on the goal to assassinate all seven targets or as many as he could on his own and reap the benefits.

Ravyn was assassinating the lieutenants and captains, all of them related to the given targets, and with the death count and his target strength growing by the day, it was bound to send alarm bells ringing through the camp.

Ravyn knew that the majority of his targeted individuals were bound to gather under a roof, and once they did, he was prepared to kill them, and that time came hours after he killed the seventh soldier.

'Five of the seven individuals came, and their deaths will give me around 1.8 million points, and the quest will give me around four million points,'

'It's regarding time I make some contribution to the team,' Ravyn thought as he made his way to the infirmary area.

Ravyn's previously invisible figure completely vanished once he entered the inner area of the infirmary as he used his best stealth skill, Hollow Meld, making his figure shift into the void of the space, becoming invisible and intangible for up to Sixty seconds.

Ravyn moved through all the barricades and security before entering a large, well-lit room with a single middle-aged man seated behind a desk reading a book, and by his side stood a cloaked figure like a statue.

Ravyn appeared behind them, looking at the two men with cold dark eyes as he uttered a few words in the silence of the void, taught by his master, before he picked up his chained sickles hanging from his back.

He appeared in the real space, his arms moving like a blur, slicing through the neck of the guard and the other sickle plunging into the head of the seated figure, with both sickles cloaked in a light yellowish toxin that acted the moment the sickle made contact with flesh.

In an instant, two high-stage Sixth Rank individuals were killed, not even so being given time to react, and the feat was nearly impossible to achieve by the same Rank assassin, let alone someone two Ranks lower than the two targets.

Ravyn didn't speak a word as he stared at the dimming eyes of the two men before he began to strip the man seated on the chair, taking his brown robe, the cloaths he wore, and the badge in molded in the image of a six eyes lion.
