Alex looked back toward the tunnel. "This whole asteroid seems to come from an ancient being, at least at progenitor level."

Mingyue’s eyes narrowed. "You mean this asteroid is part of their body?"

"It seems like fossilized remains," Alex said. "We should do more research, Mingyue. But be careful."

Mingyue nodded, then followed him back into the tunnel.

With the identity he took from the chief engineer, Alex moved without trouble.

He pressed his palm to a control plate.

The formation barrier above the shaft flickered once, then stabilized.

They slipped through the checkpoint and dropped deeper.

The deeper they went, the more the air changed.

The corruption was stronger here. A thin black fog spread through the corridor, and every few breaths, the cleansing formations activated, scraping it away before it could spread too far.

Mingyue’s expression tightened. "If this really is part of a high-level being, then what is this corruption?"

The rune light cleared the corrupt fog for a moment.

The first knight froze mid-step.

Another layer of ice sealed its head and upper torso into a solid block.

For a moment, both statues were still.
