Modern World Warlock-Chapter 343: Megan’s Threats
A few minutes before Netherius was interviewed, Megan and Lindsey were at the southern checkpoint, preparing the drones Trinity had requested by tying a talisman to their frames.
Zac and Curtis were resting there as well after their fight with Saturio. Since they had to use all of their healthstones power to fully heal their injuries, most of their stamina was depleted.
The NSS agents were trying to communicate with other government agencies to provide intel, including the Novarian military, which had been helping with the evacuation of the residents.
Suddenly, Alice arrived with Maya, the twins, and the three vampires—Claudia, Laurent, and Madeline—and they were a bit surprised to see their allies calmly cooperating with the agents.
"Alice, are you okay?" Megan asked, noticing the furious gaze of the dark paladin.
Marcus, the chief of operations for the NSS, approached their group to check if they needed medical help.
As soon as the chief stood near them, Alice grabbed him by force from behind, hugged his neck with her arm, and skillfully stole his pistol from its holster, placing the barrel next to his temple.
"Woah, woah!" Zac exclaimed, confused at the ex-detective's actions.
Maya and the vampires accompanying Alice followed along and took the agents near them as hostages, which only seemed to confuse their allies further.
Megan, who wasn't aware of the situation, snapped out of her confusion and followed their movements, grabbing the agent next to her before asking for the reason.
"The NSS sold off Camille…" Alice muttered, and her words surprised even Marcus, who was genuinely unaware of it.
*Tch!* "What!?" Megan asked, gritting her teeth with evident anger.
The harpion twins clumsily explained what had happened at the northern checkpoint, and when they mentioned that Saris had been killed, the Jade Dragon members got even more upset.
Zac was still slightly confused as he never expected a powerful government agency to side with the necromancer, and hearing the news of Saris made him somberly ponder in silence.
The redhead and the banshee had met each other as enemies, and it was thanks to Dante that they ended up becoming friends.
Saris even became Zac and Victoria's roommate after she forcefully made herself comfortable in their room. Still, they got along pretty well, as the banshee respected Zac's strength.
After hearing the news that she had been killed and seeing the memories spent with her flashing in front of his eyes, an uncontrollable berserker rage began to manifest inside of him.
Marcus, who was being held by Alice, spoke up and tried to explain that they had nothing to do with the betrayal. Still, there was no room for trusting the agents anymore.
Megan became agitated, fearing the worst for Camille, considering the handler had always been like an older sister to her. As a result, she contacted Trinity with her earpiece.
"Give me the NSS director's personal number…" Megan asked with a commanding tone, and Trinity didn't waste a second to find the information.
Noria Stone, the director of the NSS, was the person in charge of both Ronald and Marcus, who had the highest positions in the agency.
Ronald was the deputy director, who acted as a right-hand for Noria, while Marcus was the chief of operations and focused on managing the agents who were out on missions.
When Trinity connected the call to Megan's earpiece, she heard the voice of the NSS director, asking who dared call her personal number.
"Shut the fuck up…" Megan said, prompting Noria to be silent for a moment.
"This is Megan Dunlap, the leader of the Jade Dragons…" Megan continued, and Noria seemed surprised that the woman had called her.
"Are you surprised that I'm alive? Were you planning on selling us out, too?" Megan asked, her voice breaking from anger.
Noria was genuinely confused. She had been waiting for Ronald to report to her for a few hours, but she only received Marcus' intel, so she instantly deduced that she was missing critical information.
"Listen to me. I don't care about the inner problems of your agency… We had a deal to work together, and you people crossed the line," Megan stated, her words loud and clear.
Without waiting for the call to be finished, Noria ordered the agents around her to check on Ronald's status as soon as possible.
"I don't know what happened, Miss Dunlap, but I'll get to the bottom of it," Noria said on the phone.
"Sure you will, or we will kill every single NSS agent that we find," Megan replied without hesitation.
Strangely, Megan believed that both Marcus and Noria weren't aware of the betrayal that happened at the northern checkpoint. However, holding the agents as hostages was their only leverage.
After Megan hung up, the NSS director became furious, not at Megan's threats but at the actions of her subordinates.
Even if Ronald had a good motive for betraying the Jade Dragons, Noria had to be notified of such plans beforehand to avoid this kind of situation.
It took a few minutes for one of the agents to make contact with Ronald, who spoke on the phone with a regretful tone. freewёbnoνel.com
"What the hell did you do, Ronald!?" Noria shouted on the phone, veins popping out of her head.
"I'll take full responsibility for my actions," Ronald replied.
"Quit it with your apologetic speech. I want to know the details!" Noria continued.
Ronald tried to calmly explain that, while they were waiting for Camille's group to arrive, they had been invaded by Netherius himself.
The necromancer had corrupted a small part of the northern checkpoint, away from prying eyes, which allowed him to see and hear everything that was happening and teleport to that exact location.
Netherius provided Ronald the option of giving Camille to him or becoming an undead with the dozens of agents present.
While it was a difficult choice, Ronald truly believed that he had made the right call. In his mind, it was better for one person to die than dozens of them.
Noria understood his train of thought. It was logical. Still, since she wasn't informed about it, now all of their agents at the southern checkpoint were hostages of the Jade Dragons.
