Mr. Hawthorne, Your Wife Wants a Divorce Again-Chapter 1098: Repaying a Life-Saving Grace with Devotion
The man-eating plant on the balcony, the impeccably clean experimental table and geometric desk inside, and the spare silver-edged glasses on the table all unmistakably indicated the identity of the room’s owner.
Yet for this very reason, Ann Vaughn was so shocked.
How could her rescuer be Wade Lowell?
Wasn’t he afraid of causing trouble for himself once the base found out?
Or was it because the experimental results weren’t out yet, and he was worried that if she, the test subject, was taken away, his research would be disrupted?
Ann Vaughn almost forgot that Wade Lowell was a research fanatic through and through. In the name of research, he might do things crazier than defying the base’s high officials.
Thinking of this, taking advantage of Wade Lowell’s absence, Ann Vaughn immediately headed for the door.
But just as she reached the doorway, voices arguing from outside abruptly halted her steps.
"Summer is your assistant. She stole a pass and sneaked into the prison cell, clearly with ill intentions. It’s an indisputable fact. If you keep defending her, the professor and that gentleman might consider you her accomplice. Have you thought about your future and..."
"Where is she now?"
"The patrol team is still searching for her, but I doubt she’s left the base yet. Every exit has been sealed. It’s just a matter of time before she’s caught."
"Alright, notify me immediately if there’s any news."
"The higher-ups suspect that the person who tampered with the professor’s ship, causing him to fall into a coma at sea, is Summer. They’re all eager to catch her for a proper interrogation. I can’t help you with this."
The conversation ended there.
Ann Vaughn heard the door next door slamming shut with a loud bang, indicating that Josiah Keaton had entered the room, but Dean Master Moore and his men seemed to linger outside, pacing.
Her heart was in her throat; they had already searched Josiah Keaton’s quarters, and Wade Lowell’s place could be next...
As Ann Vaughn pondered whether to jump out of the window again, Dean Master Moore’s somewhat ingratiating voice suddenly reached her ears.
"Dr. Locke, back at this hour? You must be exhausted."
Ann Vaughn clenched her delicate fingers, quietly pressing her ear to the door.
Given Wade Lowell’s habit of not emerging from the lab for three to five days, Dean Master Moore was mentally prepared to wait indefinitely. But who would have thought he’d return so early today?
Despite his confusion, Dean Master Moore hurriedly advanced, explaining his purpose to Wade Lowell.
"Summer is your test subject; surely, you wouldn’t want her to escape before the results are out, right? Of course, don’t worry, we won’t bother you long. Once we’re done searching inside, we will..."
Before he finished speaking, Wade Lowell turned around, his expression cold as he said frostily, "Find evidence that she’s hiding here with me, then come back."
With that, Wade opened the lock and entered, slamming the door in Dean Master Moore’s face without a hint of courtesy.
Feeling snubbed once again, Dean Master Moore was seething with frustration.
Everyone’s a big deal around here!!
Josiah Keaton playing hard to get was one thing, but didn’t Wade Lowell fear that without Summer, he wouldn’t be able to produce experimental results?!
"Boss, what now? The only unsearched place left in the whole base is here. Should we break in?" asked one of Dean Master Moore’s subordinates.
Dean Master Moore shook his head, his gaze dark as he stared at Wade Lowell’s door, "He’s a talent highly valued by that gentleman. Making a scene isn’t in our best interest. Keep a close watch on Josiah’s area; Summer is probably hidden there. As for Wade Lowell... if he knew Summer’s whereabouts, he’d have long brought her back to the lab and wouldn’t bother covering for her."
"As expected from the boss, we know what to do now."
Yet, Dean Master Moore couldn’t have guessed that the possibility he ruled out was precisely the truth.
In the room next door.
Josiah Keaton frowned while repeatedly playing the base’s surveillance footage, yet after going through it several times, he found no trace of Ann Vaughn on the screens.
The surveillance covered every corner of the island; if Ann Vaughn were here, the cameras should have surely captured her.
But with Ann Vaughn not appearing on surveillance, Josiah Keaton felt both relieved and full of anxiety. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Though it was good she wasn’t caught on camera, the fact that she didn’t come to him immediately indicated she might have encountered some trouble.
Josiah Keaton’s gaze deepened.
As long as she wasn’t deliberately distancing herself from him, he could handle any trouble.
In fact, Josiah Keaton’s intuition was correct.
Ann Vaughn indeed faced significant trouble.
She had imagined Dean Master Moore barging in to capture her or Wade Lowell confining her for his research.
She even thought about how to escape unscathed when these situations arose.
However, she never expected Wade Lowell to corner her step by step to the experimental table, trapping her in his embrace—
The evening light outside dimmed, and with no lights on inside, the room was filled with a dim, ambiguous allure.
Wade Lowell had his hands propped on the experimental table beside Ann Vaughn, confining her petite form between his arms, staring intently at Ann Vaughn’s startled little face through the ice-cold snow of his eyes beneath his silver-edged glasses.
"Afraid of me?" He laughed low, tinged with a hint of sarcasm.
Ann Vaughn hadn’t grasped how the situation shifted to this. Hearing him, she forced herself to stay calm, "Dr. Locke, young and talented, I’m naturally afraid as a mere assistant."
"Yet, you don’t seem afraid of Josiah Keaton."
What was this?
Ann Vaughn frowned; why did that sound so strange?
Before she could ponder it further, a strong hand suddenly gripped her slender waist, effortlessly lifting her onto the experimental table.
Following this, Wade Lowell’s long form pressed against her.
Alarmed, Ann Vaughn hurriedly tried to jump off the table, but Wade Lowell’s grip held her firmly in place, rendering her immobile.
"What are you doing?" Ann Vaughn’s voice trembled with urgency, her bright eyes full of anxiety.
"What, Josiah Keaton can do this to you, but I can’t?" Wade Lowell’s low voice suddenly turned cold, his gaze on her becoming increasingly dangerous.
What the hell?!
Ann Vaughn felt like cursing, flushed with fury from his insulting words, "I even considered you a savior, but you’re just a pervert! Let me down!"
Wade Lowell’s expression remained cold as he smirked, "Since you think of me as your savior, shouldn’t you have the consciousness to repay the saving grace with your body?"
What kind of nonsense logic was that!
Unable to bear it, Ann Vaughn shed her timid assistant persona, jabbing a golden needle fiercely into the acupoint on Wade Lowell’s shoulder!
Wade Lowell neither flinched nor dodged, and amidst her outburst, slowly removed his glasses, then——
Leaned in to capture her incessantly speaking mouth in a kiss.
