Chapter 12: Trying every which way

The Guardian emerged from the coffin, its grotesque form now fully evolved into a Tier 1 "Grand" Guardian. Its armor had grown thicker, its body more massive, and its eyes glowed with an even more malevolent light. The Tomb Hearts it had absorbed pulsed within its chest, radiating a dark energy that made the air around it crackle.

Sett's mind raced. He couldn't afford to make a single mistake now. The Guardian was much stronger than him, having body that seemed like reinforced steel. And its Axiom of Water made it nearly invulnerable to fire, its only known weakness.

He needed a new plan, and fast.

Zainah stood at the entrance of the chamber, her bone flute trembling in her hands. She had used her Axiom to distract the Guardian, but it had only bought Sett a few precious seconds. Zarah lay unconscious some distance away, just enough distance that some other mummy wouldn't come and hurt her without Zainah's knowledge.

The little girl's severed arm was still bled profusely. The clothes bundled around the wound could barely hold it at bay.

Zainah's eyes filled with desperation, but she knew she couldn't intervene directly. She was no fighter, and her Axiom was useless against a creature with a mind like this Guardian.

And at that precise moment, Sett felt the situation settle in. The only way out was to leave this place immediately and get Zarah medical attention, but to leave the Tomb, he would have to kill this creature.

The Guardian charged again, its movements more calculated now. It had learned from their earlier exchanges. Sett couldn't rely on brute force or simple tricks anymore. He needed something more.

As the Guardian closed in, Sett's eyes darted around the chamber. And then, he saw it. A small, almost imperceptible crack in the wall near the coffin. It was faint, but Sett's heightened senses picked up on it immediately.

The crack was too straight, too deliberate to be natural. It was a hidden door.

The Guardian swung its fist again, but this time, Sett didn't dodge. He stepped forward, meeting the blow head-on. The impact was brutal, sending a shockwave through his body, but Sett held his ground. He grabbed the Guardian's arm, his fingers trying to dig into the creature's flesh.

"Warrrgh!!"

With a surge of strength, Sett twisted the Guardian's arm, forcing the creature to its knees. The Guardian roared in fury, its free hand swinging wildly, but Sett was ready. He ducked under the blow and slammed his foot into the crack in the wall

The mechanism activated with a loud click. The wall shuddered, and a hidden door began to slide open. Beyond it, Sett could see a narrow passageway, dimly lit in Tomb-light. What was inside it made Sett's eyes light up.

The narrow passage was full of mummies!

Not human mummies but ostrich mummies!

Hundreds of broken eggs and small ostriches filled the room!

The Guardian's eyes widened. It struggled against Sett's grip, but Sett held firm. With a burst of strength, he hurled the creature towards the wall on one end and ran towards the croaking birds in the passageway.

"Zain!" he shouted.

Axiom of Playulness—Song of Playfulness!

The mummies grew still and Sett pulled out the matchbox in his hand. There was a wine-green torch that was still alit on the walls, too, and picking it up, he ran through the middle of the ostriches. They remained still as the flames burned them, annihilated them.

[Limitless Evolution: 91/100] (+10)

[Limitless Evolution: 100/100] (+9)

Sett roared, a torch burning brightly in his hand.

The flame from it was also harmful to him but he was skilled enough to avoid it. But for a moment, he felt dizzy and almost fell towards it. Struggling to stand, he ran back towards the growling Grand Guardian.

At the same time, a fierce amount of information appeared in his mind along with a new skill.

"Fuck, it's useless against you, too!"

It was a super good power but useless in this combat.

Sett slid underneath the Guardian's legs and ran towards the doorway, picking up Zainah under his arms and then Zarah onto his back as he continued running. The Grand Guardian followed him with even faster speed than himself.

Just as he was running, Sett's expression changed and he jumped to the side, barely dodging a glinting silver blade.

"Oh you dodged me," said a cold voice, seemingly amused. But before it could continue, the Grand Guardian burst into the corner and slammed the voice away.

Sett stared at the idiotic human who had been pummeled to near-death towards the wall. But then, his eyebrows twitched and he ran towards the dying man. The women in his arms groaned in pain.

"Don't take it personally, but thank you man," Sett said with a smirk. He stomped the man's skull to death.

The man only had two Tomb Hearts but that was exactly what Sett needed now. He felt the energy, the warmth from the man stream into him even as he ran. The incensed roar of the Guardian echoed behind him.

[150/100]

100 points blurred away and Sett felt his iron-like body condense. His missing flesh in multiple parts immediately regrew, his hollow cheeks became fuller, his back muscles all connected to form true harmony.

He felt as if his own body had been refined from steel.

Sett slid to a stop and gently let down the women from his arms. Zainah stared at him with a pleading gaze and Sett kneeled in one leg before her.

"It's coming!" she said.

"My lady," he said, his tone different as he ruffled her hair. "Don't worry."

The Guardian's remaining armor creaked as it reached mere arm's length away from Sett. It charged at him without any hesitation. Settsweeped his legs in a circular arc with immense speed and the Guardian crashed down on the floor. Before it had time to stand up, he began stomping its head.

Stomp. Stomp. Crack!

Earlier, he didn't have the power to break its defenses but now that they were on equal footing, it stood no chance. With another crack, the thing stopped moving.
