Chapter 679: Run

That immortal must have been caught by the spider’s web and dragged into the dense web structure below. Could they even be called cobwebs? If anything, they seemed more like razor-sharp steel threads instead.

It didn’t take much to imagine what would happen if someone was dragged through these webs.

Yan Shenjun finally took action. He knew how horrifying the cobwebs were so he knew better to avoid touching them. Instead, he pulled out a green crystal and chanted a formula. Then, he tossed it up in the air, where it splintered into hundreds of tiny crystal scales. These scales darted towards the grey-robed immortal like moths to a flame, and in seconds, they completely enveloped the old immortal.

This was a unique defensive magic treasure of Yan Shenjun’s and he intended to save the grey-robed immortal with it.

After all, the man was part of his faction and his strength was second only to profound immortals. Yan Shenjun would try to save him if he could. In a sense, Yan Shenjun was still quite generous.

The green crystal scales clung to the grey-robed immortal’s body as if he was wearing armor made of crystal. The resilience of this suit of armor was demonstrated when the webs failed to slice open the crystal scales. However, they could also hear cracking sounds as if the crystals were starting to crack under pressure. 𝑓𝑟eℯ𝒘𝗲𝑏n𝑜𝚟𝙚𝒍.𝒄o𝐦

The grey-robed immortal was fortunate to have made it out alive. With a face drained completely of color, it was clear that he did not dare to fight the giant spider anymore. However, before he knew it, a few strands of cobwebs that bound his feet dragged him downward. The old immortal struggled with all his might to break free from its grip. Even his lips were trembling in fear.

“Shenjun, save me!” The grey-robed immortal begged Yan Shenjun. The latter was just about to take action when he stopped abruptly and his face stiffened up.

Not only Yan Shenjun, but the other immortals shared the same reaction. Those with weaker minds even took a step back out of fright.

This stunned the grey-robed immortal. It wasn’t a second later when he came to a realization.

There was something behind him.

Slowly turning around, he noticed that the giant spider had crawled up the ledge. The endless rows of beady eyes were staring at his back, like street lamps that lined both sides of a street. Even the most seasoned immortals had never seen anything like this. The grey-robed immortal felt a chill rush up his spine immediately.

He wanted to move but the giant spider was quicker. It opened its giant mouth and chomped down on the grey-robed immortal. He vanished, just like that.

It happened so quickly that even the profound immortal, Yan Shenjun, couldn’t react in time.

“Run!”

Watching from the rear, Lin Jin made a swift decision.

They had to run.

He had thought about escaping since just now but was afraid of becoming the heaven weaving spider’s first target. All this while, he was merely waiting for an opportunity. Now that the spider had swallowed the immortal, it threw Yan Shenjun’s faction into a panic and Lin Jin knew his chance had arrived.

Lin Jin shouted the word ‘run’ for the oriole’s ears.

Whether or not she understood Lin Jin’s intentions, Lin Jin had no idea. He couldn’t care for that now. The situation was simple really. Here was a Rank 8 beast they couldn’t possibly defeat. Even Yan Shenjun was useless against it so what else could they do besides run?

To assume the spider to be a normal beast and insist on venturing downward wasn’t such a good idea.

The rest may not be aware of the heaven weaving spider’s background, but Lin Jin did.

The museum clearly stated how the heaven weaving spider was an ancient immortal beast, raised by a human saint under the instruction of heaven when the sky shattered. This heaven weaving spider was able to cultivate using the five-element stone to create five-element cobwebs that could mend the sky.

How crazy was that?

In other words, this spider was a creature of merit who contributed greatly to the world. Also, who put it here?

There used to be an endless flow of plasma up there. Did the heaven weaving spider choose to dive through the plasma and build its home here?

Or did someone bring it here to guard something?

Who could that person be?

The answer seemed so obvious. It must be the ‘human saint’ mentioned in the museum. To be deemed a saint in ancient times, Lin Jin knew that must be a prominent figure they couldn’t afford to provoke.

Lin Jin assumed this saint must have put the heaven weaving spider here to deter anyone from taking what’s down there.

Perhaps it might even be guarding the saint’s hiding place.

In any case, Lin Jin thought it was sensible to retreat and not even think about obtaining what’s down there.

That would be the wisest choice.

Lin Jin couldn’t care less what happened to Yan Shenjun’s group. He had picked a great time to escape since Yan Shenjun and his group were startled by the sudden attack. Lin Jin and Inferno Monk retreated immediately, and the oriole woman understood Lin Jin’s signal. Like them, she took to the skies instantly.

Soon, the trio broke off from the group. Lin Jin headed upward without hesitation.

Inferno Monk seemed hesitant. He probably wanted to know just what was hidden at the bottom of the lake. What was it that got Yan Shenjun into planning this for a hundred years? When he saw Lin Jin’s determination, Inferno Monk smiled.

“It seems I haven’t changed this bad habit of mine after all. Why should I be so obsessed? Buddhism teaches me to let go of my earthly desires, and I still have trouble doing that. Mr. Lin, you have quite the potential in becoming a Buddha. Would you like to learn Buddhism from me when you have the time?” asked Inferno Monk on their way out.

Lin Jin shook his head, indicating his lack of interest.

He had been observing the situation down below. Clearly, Yan Shenjun and his group showed no intention of retreating. Lin Jin and Inferno Monk could let go, but Yan Shenjun couldn’t.

After all, he had been planning this for more than a hundred years now. If Lin Jin was in his shoes, he probably would have doubled down on his plan too. Maybe Yan Shenjun was trying to come up with a way to slip past the spider. Regardless, Lin Jin wanted no part in it.

The appearance of the spider was the best excuse for Lin Jin to leave this place. If Lin Jin were to run off at any other time, he would rouse Yan Shenjun’s suspicion. The latter might even try to attack him for escaping.

For some reason, the oriole felt an innate trust toward Lin Jin, and the trio gained altitude until they were above ground.

“It’s a pity we couldn’t finish Yan Shenjun off. He’s a vengeful guy and will pose a potential threat in the future.” Inferno Monk still held a grudge against Yan Shenjun for tricking him, but Lin Jin agreed with his concern. Indeed, letting someone like Yan Shenjun live was a potential danger.

The man had a high cultivation level, and was outstanding even among profound immortals. It would be troublesome for them if he came back for revenge someday.

Then, a thought came to mind and Lin Jin said, “That’s easy. We’ll just stand guard here. Yan Shenjun will either die inside or wear himself out and retreat. The moment he appears, we’ll attack him and get rid of him for good.”

“Easier said than done!” Inferno Monk looked helpless. “The other immortals aside, even if you, me, and that monster works together, we won’t be able to defeat Yan Shenjun.”

“What if we have assistance?” Lin Jin smiled. Inferno Monk was just about to speak when Lin Jin opened his palm to reveal a blood orb. He tapped at it and the orb enlarged. A speck of ink appeared inside the orb. It began spreading rapidly until it looked like a waterfall of ink.

The next instant, human silhouettes emerged from the inky waterfall. When Inferno Monk got a closer look at these individuals, he almost stumbled to the ground.
