Chapter 79: We Need To Talk

The notifications blinked in the corner of his vision, cheerfully announcing his victory in a tone that felt way too happy for how bloody everything still was.

Lanz rolled his shoulders until his joints popped, twisted his back until it gave a satisfying crack, then flexed his fingers one by one before finally letting the tension drain out of his arms.

The blade disappeared into his inventory with a faint shimmer, leaving his hands empty.

He tugged off his helmet, shaking his head just enough for his hair to fall into place.

A hand ran through it, smearing sweat through the already messy strands, and then he exhaled a long, steaming sigh that felt like it dragged out half the exhaustion sitting in his chest.

"That was an exhausting f*cking night," he muttered, the words half a complaint, but more like a victory lap!

He stood there for a moment, letting the silence settle, and turned toward the lake.

The water was still and dark, reflecting just enough of the night sky.

He stared for a long while, thinking about whether he should continue and hunt those crocodies as well or if it was smarter to just put it off.

The thought stayed with him longer than it should have, circling back again and again until he was bored of his own indecision.

His jaw worked for a moment as if he was chewing on the answer, then he finally shrugged.

"Yeah, nah," he said, standing back up and dusting himself off. "F*ck that sh*t. I’m going back to the cave and sleep again."

The decision brought an instant wave of relief.

He didn’t even bother glancing back at the lake again, didn’t try to look stoic or dramatic about it. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

He was done for the night, done with bleeding, done with fighting, done with thinking, done with everything except lying flat on the ground until his brain shut off.

He stretched again, yawning this time, feeling every muscle in his body protest the motion, and trudged toward the waterfall where the cave was at.

His black boots sank into the dirt with every step, leaving heavy imprints behind him, the sound of his footsteps the only thing breaking the quiet.

When he finally reached the entrance, he didn’t stop to check for anything dangerous waiting inside.

Instead, he dropped down onto the ground the second he was inside, not even bothering to find a comfortable spot, and rolled onto his back.

The smell of blood still clung to him and his drip was tainted with blood, but none of that mattered anymore.

His eyelids were already heavy, and his ass was deadass tired.

"This night was fire~~~," he said to no one in particular, letting out one last tired sigh before closing his eyes. "I hope tomorrow will be also."

And with that, he let sleep take him, uncaring if the dungeon outside was still dangerous or if anything was creeping closer.

For once, he was going to let the world handle itself without him.

The moon was starting to hung high over Velmordop, pale and distant, casting just enough light to remind everyone that it was still night.

The city center was buzzing with life as always, bright signs flashing, people drinking away their paychecks, couples arguing about stupid things, all sorts of things you’d expect in the center of the city.

Out on the outer streets though, the noise dulled into something quieter, with only a few groups of late-night drinkers laughing too loudly, some tired workers dragging themselves home, and the occasional car rumbling past on half-lit roads.

Kaz was among those heading home, his steps steady but slow, his jacket hanging loosely on him after a long shift.

He had just walked Angela back to her place, made sure she got inside safely, and then immediately turned to make the long trip back to his own house.

His body wanted sleep, but his brain apparently decided it wasn’t done replaying the day yet.

His mind drifted to what Angela had said earlier, the words still fresh enough.

"But now that you’ve finally experienced how brutal this job really is, are you starting to regret taking it?"

’This is the best opportunity I’ve ever gotten to repay my parents for everything they’ve done. With this, I can at least start carrying a bit of the weight they’ve been holding up all these years,’ Kaz thought, his head bowed slightly, his steps steady despite the exhaustion pressing down on him.

The sounds of the city faded into background noise as his focus narrowed to one thing — getting home and proving to himself that today had been worth it.

By the time he reached the front of their apartment, his determination hadn’t wavered.

He placed his hand on the doorknob and then twisted it open.

The familiar smell of the apartment greeted him first, warm and grounding, but it was quickly overshadowed by what he saw.

His father, mother, and younger sister were all sitting at the table, their expressions unreadable, the air around them unusually still.

Kaz froze for a moment, blinking as he tried to piece together what was happening.

He stepped fully inside, closing the door behind him, and glanced between the three of them.

"W—What’s with the serious vibe—" he began, his voice carrying a hint of nervous humor as he tried to break the tension.

But his mother’s voice cut him off, calm but firm enough to leave no room for argument.

"Sit down, Kaz," she said, her gaze steady. "We need to talk."

The tone in her voice made it clear this wasn’t one of their usual casual family chats.

Whatever was about to be said next was important — serious enough that almost the entire house had been waiting for him to come home before saying it.

Kaz nodded silently and moved to take a seat, the weight of the moment settling over him.
