My Amnesic Ex Married My Sister, So I Married His Uncle-Chapter 75: My Weakness Is You
At 6:30 p.m., the summer heat was gradually fading, and the clamor of the day began to give way to the cool of the evening.
Stella Sterling changed into a soft white, designer sleeveless top with a ruffled crew neck and a matching paneled skirt. She sat obediently in the living room, waiting for Owen Rhodes to come down.
Growing bored with the wait, she started to pass the time by playfully tapping her toes.
When Owen Rhodes came downstairs, he had shed his typical elite-style suit. He was wearing a natural-colored, short-sleeved linen shirt paired with charcoal gray ankle-length trousers, the cuffs resting just right to reveal a pair of slender ankles.
She was so used to seeing him in his impeccably tailored suits that seeing him dressed so casually made him look like any other young, energetic college guy you’d find on campus.
"Let’s go."
Under Stella Sterling’s direct gaze, Owen Rhodes very naturally took her hand and led her outside.
He drove himself that evening, choosing a low-key black Mercedes-Benz.
Seeing more and more young couples along the road, Stella Sterling belatedly asked, "Where are we going?"
"Jandor University."
Owen Rhodes turned to look at her. "You’ve always wanted to experience university life in this country, haven’t you? I can’t give you the full experience, but I can at least bring you here to pretend to be a campus couple."
Jandor University was the premier institution of higher learning in Jandor, ranked among the top five in the country for its overall strength, attracting countless students who admired its reputation.
As the last ray of evening sunlight vanished, orange-yellow streetlights flickered on across the campus. Even the chirping of the summer cicadas seemed to carry a youthful energy.
It was currently graduation season, and as the two of them walked hand-in-hand along the main campus road, they could see graduates taking photos under the evening sky.
Stella Sterling turned her head curiously and asked, "Owen Rhodes, what was your university life like?"
"Me?" Owen Rhodes recalled for a moment. "Just an endless cycle of studying and working. It was very dull. Back then, all I wanted was to finish my degree as quickly as possible and make a name for myself. If you’re hoping to hear any interesting campus stories from me, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed."
Stella Sterling held his hand, skipping along and stepping on the fallen leaves on the ground.
"A student as outstanding as you, Mr. Rhodes, must have won many honors, right? A good student like you must have been very popular." Then she added, "Very popular with the girls."
Owen Rhodes held her hand steadily. Hearing this, he gently squeezed her fingers and smiled. "Perhaps. But back then, I didn’t have the spare time to focus on such things, so I naturally never paid any attention."
Stella Sterling suddenly stopped walking, looked up at him, and asked, "Then when was this ’unspeakable past’ of yours from?"
Owen Rhodes faltered for a second. He had to think for a moment before he remembered the line he’d used to put her off back in Lumina: "Everyone has a past."
’But what kind of unspeakable past do I even have?’
’My past was a blank slate, and she was the only color in that void.’
Just as Owen Rhodes was wondering how to explain, they both felt a blinding light flash from the side.
The light vanished in an instant, and soon, a young man holding a camera hurried over.
"Hello, fellow students. I’m an officer from the Jandor University Student Union’s publicity department."
The "two students" exchanged a slightly guilty look, and by some unspoken agreement, neither said a word to correct him.
"We’re doing a special feature for graduation season, and I just saw that you two are a very good-looking couple, so I took the liberty of snapping a photo. Would it be okay if we posted it on our campus’s official social media account later?"
The young man held up his camera to show them the photo he had just captured.
In the photo, Stella Sterling’s hands were cupped in Owen Rhodes’s palms as she looked up to speak with him, their eyes seemingly holding only each other.
The evening breeze gently lifted the hem of Stella Sterling’s skirt, creating a soft, elegant curve. They looked just like any other ordinary couple on campus.
Given Owen Rhodes’s status, Stella Sterling looked to him to make the decision.
But Owen Rhodes just said, "You decide."
Stella Sterling nodded. "Yes, that’s fine. But could you please send me a copy of the original photo?"
"Of course, thank you!"
Stella Sterling exchanged WeChat contacts with the young officer and soon received the photo from him.
Owen Rhodes leaned over to take a look, the corners of his mouth turning up unconsciously. "Forward it to me."
A few seconds later, the photo became his phone’s wallpaper.
The previous topic was naturally dropped. Owen Rhodes led Stella Sterling past the brightly lit library, through the bustling athletic fields, and finally to the food street outside the campus’s west gate.
Compared to the campus at night, the food street was clearly more vibrant and full of life.
The air was filled with the aroma of barbecue spices, the scent coming from a nearby roasted pig’s trotters shop. A paper advertisement was taped to the shop’s wall: "Students who rank first get free pig’s trotters."
Stella Sterling was a little dismayed. "If only you were still a student, you could get free pig’s trotters!"
She, for one, had no doubt that he would have ranked first.
Owen Rhodes gave a helpless smile. "Mrs. Rhodes, our family hasn’t fallen so far that we can’t afford a pig’s trotter."
"Really? Then I want two."
"Alright, two it is."
Stella Sterling had never been to a food street like this before. Holding Owen Rhodes’s hand, she bought things all along the way.
Owen Rhodes didn’t stop her, buying anything and everything she wanted to eat.
By the time they reached the end of the street, both of their hands were full.
Owen Rhodes found a well-lit, empty table, and they sat down to tackle their spoils.
From roasted pig’s trotters to takoyaki, from fresh meat potstickers to stinky tofu, from chilled mung bean soup to plum blossom cakes, Stella Sterling ate to her heart’s content.
But she had a small appetite and couldn’t eat much, so the rest went into Owen Rhodes’s stomach.
Finally, there was a container of small pork tenderloin skewers left. Stella Sterling, who loved a challenge despite her low tolerance, had insisted on getting the insanely spicy version.
Picking up a fiery red skewer, Stella Sterling’s mouth watered, but she didn’t dare take a bite.
So, with a mischievous glint in her eye, she moved the skewer to Owen Rhodes’s lips. "Thank you for the wonderful evening, Mr. Rhodes. This is a small token of my appreciation~"
Owen Rhodes glanced at it and frowned. "Stella Sterling, if you’re plotting to murder your dear husband, you can just say so."
"Now you’re going to hurt my feelings..." Stella Sterling pouted and pulled the skewer back. "Hmph, fine, don’t eat it. I’ll eat it myself."
But just as she was about to take a bite, Owen Rhodes helplessly took her hand, guided the skewer back to his own mouth, and took a resigned bite.
A few seconds later, Owen Rhodes, the ever-dignified CEO of Kyros Group, was coughing ungracefully by the roadside, his face flushed completely red.
Stella Sterling giggled while handing him a bottle of water. "So, it turns out Mr. Rhodes’s weakness is spicy food."
Owen Rhodes was sucking in sharp breaths from the spiciness.
Once he had recovered a little, he looked at her and corrected, "My weakness is you."
’If she hadn’t been the one feeding it to me, I never would have eaten that lethal thing.’
Stella Sterling’s playful mood instantly vanished, and she felt her heart float up into the air.
’I’m probably a lost cause.’ She didn’t doubt Owen Rhodes’s words in the slightest; instead, she felt a sweetness slowly seeping into her heart, so sweet that the corners of her mouth curved up.
While she was still lost in a daze, Owen Rhodes picked up her leftover mung bean soup and finished it in a few gulps, not thinking anything of it.
In the end, of the entire container of insanely spicy pork tenderloin skewers, only the one Owen Rhodes had eaten was gone. The rest were left on the table.
The tip of Owen Rhodes’s nose was red from the spice, which made him look inexplicably cute.
"Are you satisfied with our date tonight, Mrs. Rhodes?"
He didn’t know what she was thinking, but she had her head down, smiling happily.
Only then did Stella Sterling look up. "Mhm! Very satisfied!"
’Another item crossed off my bucket list.’
