My Amnesic Ex Married My Sister, So I Married His Uncle-Chapter 78: I Feel Like Ethan Rhodes Is Starting to Remember Something
The group eventually ended up in the hospital’s emergency room.
Leo Quinn was running all over the place, one moment paying the bills, the next contacting family members.
Owen Rhodes’s injury wasn’t serious, but he couldn’t argue with Stella, who, operating on a "we’re already here, might as well" principle, insisted a nurse treat his wound.
The nurse treating his wound even added, "Good thing you came in when you did. Any later and it would’ve healed on its own!"
Owen Rhodes gave a helpless smile.
But Stella, feigning great concern, frowned and asked him, "Are you uncomfortable anywhere else? Does the wound hurt?"
’How could this possibly hurt?’
’A little scratch like this was nothing.’
’It was nothing compared to the brutal beatings he’d endured from the Rhodes Family years ago.’
But looking at Stella’s concerned expression, Owen Rhodes heard himself say, "It hurts."
The nurse: "..."
’Relax, it’s not going to kill you!’
By the time Madeline Jennings and Chase Sterling arrived, Kiana Sterling had been moved to a private room.
The doctor said it was caused by emotional distress and hypoglycemia.
Madeline Jennings had been frantic the entire way. The moment she saw Stella in the corridor leading to the hospital room, a wave of fury washed over her, so intense that she didn’t even notice Owen Rhodes standing beside her.
She stormed over in a few quick strides, and before Stella could react, Ms. Jennings slapped her across the face.
Madeline Jennings shrieked at the top of her lungs, "Stella Sterling! You’re a curse! You’re the reason your sister is gravely ill, and now you’ve caused your brother to break his arm! Kiana’s health is always so precarious, so how can you be standing here perfectly fine!"
Owen Rhodes frowned after hearing only a few words. A moment later, he reached out to cover Stella’s ears.
Stella heard him whisper, "Don’t listen."
The gloom that had descended upon her was instantly dispelled.
In truth, she wanted to tell him that covering her ears like this didn’t actually block out the sound; she had still heard every single word Ms. Jennings screamed.
Perhaps it was because her ears were warm this time while Ms. Jennings was raging, so Stella felt that her mood wasn’t quite as terrible as it could have been.
When Ms. Jennings mentioned Chase Sterling, Stella finally glanced at him, standing beside Madeline Jennings.
His arm was in a cast, held in a sling across his chest. He was dressed in casual clothes and looked somewhat weary, but it didn’t detract from his clean-cut, handsome appearance. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
After looking at him a moment longer, Stella felt that Chase Sterling was no match for Owen Rhodes at all.
Stella was baffled. ’Why did I ever think Chase Sterling was so handsome?’
’Probably because I was looking at him through a ’family filter’ back then.’
’Now that it was gone, Chase Sterling just looked like an ordinary guy.’
Ms. Jennings was still letting loose her tirade, and people from the neighboring rooms kept poking their heads out to see what was going on.
"Ms. Jennings!" Stella cut through her shrill voice. "Have some public decency. No shouting in a public space. This is a hospital. If you want to yell, you can go do it in your daughter’s room. Don’t disturb the other patients. See that? Everyone is pointing and cursing you under their breath."
With that, she turned and walked toward Kiana’s room.
She had no idea if anyone was actually cursing Ms. Jennings, but if she were a patient here and some madwoman was causing a racket outside her room at nine or ten at night, she would definitely be cursing her internally.
After taking two steps, Stella suddenly stopped, turned back, and said out of nowhere, "Ms. Jennings, you hit me again, didn’t you?"
"What?"
For a moment, Madeline Jennings didn’t understand what she meant.
When the realization finally hit her and she burst into the private room, she saw Stella grabbing Kiana’s hair, yanking the frail girl up from the bed with her right hand held high—
"How dare you!"
Stella smiled at her from a distance. The smile was beautiful and wicked, like a siren luring a man to his doom.
"SLAP—"
The sound of the slap reverberated through the spacious hospital room.
Madeline Jennings glared at her, wishing she could burn holes through her with her eyes.
She took a step forward, but Stella just smiled. "Stay right there and talk. Otherwise, I’ll hit her again."
Kiana Sterling still hadn’t regained consciousness, but her face was now contorted in pain.
Madeline Jennings gritted her teeth in hatred but had no choice but to concede. "Let her go! I won’t come over, all right?!"
Stella loosened her grip, letting Kiana’s body fall limply back onto the bed.
Chase Sterling clearly hadn’t expected the normally gentle and quiet Stella to act like this.
He stared in shock, his eyes darting from the beaming Stella to the pale-faced Kiana on the bed. When he looked back at Stella, his expression was filled with disappointment and anguish.
Chase Sterling turned to Owen Rhodes. "President Rhodes, aren’t you going to stop her? What is it you like about Stella? Her violent, unreasonable temper?"
Owen Rhodes leveled a cold gaze at him. "Why should I stop her? Could she possibly be more unreasonable than you people?"
Upon hearing that, Madeline Jennings whipped her head around. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
"Ms. Jennings arrived and, without a word, slapped Stella. She didn’t bother to ask what happened or why Kiana had fainted, just immediately pinned all the blame on Stella. Is that what you call being reasonable?"
Madeline Jennings flew into a rage. "Owen Rhodes, how long have you even known Stella? She’s my daughter! I know better than anyone what kind of person she is, I don’t need you to tell me! You, on the other hand... I see you’ve been completely fooled by her act. Do you have any idea what her personality is really like? Protect her now, and you’ll regret it in the future!"
Owen Rhodes paid her no mind, walking over to take Stella’s hand and lead her out.
"Tonight’s incident had nothing to do with Stella. The police will arrive shortly to explain what happened. It’s getting late, so we’ll be leaving now. As for the slap Stella received today," Owen Rhodes looked at Chase Sterling, "I’ll be settling that score with Young President Sterling on another day."
Hearing this, Chase Sterling’s brow furrowed in sudden understanding.
In the moment it took him to process this, Owen Rhodes had already led Stella out of the room.
Leo Quinn was watching over Ethan Rhodes, so Owen Rhodes didn’t concern himself with it, simply leading Stella by the hand toward the parking lot.
As they walked out the main entrance of the hospital, Owen Rhodes pulled Stella into his arms, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to give her some warmth.
They were silent all the way to the car. Only after they were inside did Owen Rhodes ask, "Stella, how about I hire a couple of bodyguards for you?"
"Why? Because of that slap from Ms. Jennings just now?"
Owen Rhodes’s expression grew serious. "Not just now, but all the other times before. I know you don’t like having people follow you, but I’m worried."
He always wanted to let Stella have things her way, but there were simply too many uncontrollable factors.
He couldn’t just wait until after she was hurt to retaliate every time.
Stella seemed unconcerned.
For once, being hit and screamed at by Ms. Jennings hadn’t completely ruined her mood.
She wanted to laugh, but when the corner of her mouth twitched up, her cheek still stung a little.
"There’s no need. She only managed to hit me because I wasn’t paying attention. It won’t happen again. Besides, Ms. Jennings loves Kiana so much. I slapped her precious daughter twice, right in front of her. The next time she thinks about hitting me, she’ll have to calm down and wonder if Kiana can handle another one of my slaps."
As Stella spoke, she mimed a slap in the air, as if Kiana were right in front of her.
They fell silent again.
After a long moment, Stella said, "Owen Rhodes, I think Ethan Rhodes might be starting to remember something."
