My Amnesic Ex Married My Sister, So I Married His Uncle-Chapter 93: Not Young Anymore, It’s Time to Have a Child
Even though she’d been forced to let Stella Sterling call her "Third Sister-in-law," in Yolanda Thorne’s heart, Stella was still just the obscure third daughter of the Sterling Family, someone she utterly disdained.
She couldn’t win her argument with Serena Kane about Ethan Rhodes, but desperate to save face, she decided to take it out on Stella Sterling.
Yolanda Thorne didn’t pay much mind to the fact that Stella Sterling was Owen Rhodes’s wife.
’In her mind, Owen Rhodes had probably only married Stella Sterling because she’d used some kind of scheme.’
’Otherwise, they wouldn’t have gotten married so quietly. Owen Rhodes hadn’t even mentioned Stella Sterling’s background, which clearly meant he didn’t care about her.’
Yolanda Thorne’s impression of Stella Sterling was still frozen in time, back when she was dating Ethan Rhodes.
Back then, whenever Stella saw her, she was always silent, docile, and sensible. She would listen obediently to whatever Yolanda said, never once talking back or defying her.
The last time she had accompanied Bernard Rhodes on a visit to Lanthos Bay, Stella Sterling had acted differently, but Yolanda Thorne simply figured she was putting up a brave front. After all, she’d ended up fleeing in disgrace.
That’s why, in that moment, Yolanda Thorne was utterly convinced that Stella Sterling would be the same as always—that she would obediently lower her head and admit she was wrong.
Just then, Kiana Sterling entered the drawing room, arm in arm with Ethan Rhodes.
A closer look revealed that Kiana Sterling’s eyes were still a little red-rimmed, and Ethan Rhodes’s expression was none too pleasant either. It was clear they had just had a fight.
Yolanda Thorne was still waiting for Stella Sterling to admit her mistake and apologize, but all she saw was Stella looking up at the couple who had just entered.
"Third Sister-in-law has a point. Sister, for your first family banquet, shouldn’t you have come a little earlier? It’s not right for a junior to make everyone wait for you... Sister, hurry and apologize to Third Sister-in-law. See? She’s angry."
Yolanda Thorne: ...?
’Was I talking about Kiana?’
Kiana Sterling and Ethan Rhodes: ...?
’What just happened?’
Only after Stella Sterling spoke did Yolanda Thorne realize she was still treating her like a junior, scolding her as if she had every right to.
Thanks to Owen Rhodes, Stella Sterling’s seniority in the family had jumped an entire generation. Now, Kiana Sterling, the "junior" being reprimanded by her, had no choice but to endure it.
After all, her future mother-in-law was involved. Despite being deeply unwilling, Kiana Sterling meekly admitted fault and apologized to everyone.
’Even if Ethan Rhodes did regain his memories in the future and she lost her hold on him, she had to at least get Yolanda Thorne on her side.’
With that thought, the resentment and frustration in Kiana Sterling’s heart eased slightly.
And just like that, Stella Sterling had masterfully defused Yolanda Thorne’s sudden offensive.
Everyone present was astute enough to see that Yolanda Thorne had been targeting Stella.
But Stella Sterling was clever enough to navigate the pitfall. Since neither she nor Owen Rhodes made a fuss, everyone else naturally moved on.
Only Serena Kane scoffed coldly when she saw Yolanda Thorne’s pouty, indignant expression, but she fell silent after a pointed look from her husband, Simon Rhodes.
Apart from those who had already greeted them, a young woman with a calm, poised air stood slightly away from the crowd.
She appeared to be slightly older, but her exceptional grace made her impossible to ignore, even as she stood by herself.
Owen Rhodes made the final introduction. "That’s my second brother’s daughter, Leila Rhodes."
Leila Rhodes offered a warm, generous smile and greeted them from a distance. "Uncle, Auntie."
Stella Sterling recalled Mr. Joel mentioning that Leila Rhodes was the eldest daughter of Bernard Rhodes’s second son, Byron Rhodes, and had studied medicine.
Years ago, before Bernard Rhodes stepped down, both Byron Rhodes and Owen Rhodes had been strong candidates for succession.
But a subsequent car accident left Byron Rhodes paralyzed from the chest down, forcing him to spend the rest of his life bedridden.
After the accident, Byron Rhodes was admitted to Oakhaven Hospital, a facility in which the Rhodes Family held a stake. To care for her father, Leila Rhodes took a position at Oakhaven after earning her medical doctorate abroad.
Byron Rhodes also had a younger son, who now managed overseas operations at one of Kyros’s international subsidiaries.
If Jude Rhodes hadn’t been abroad, the title of Mr. Rhodes would never have fallen to Ethan Rhodes.
Stella Sterling smiled at Leila, and after exchanging greetings, she began handing out the gifts she had brought.
There was a gift for everyone—except Kiana Sterling and Ethan Rhodes.
After the little scene Stella Sterling had just caused, Yolanda Thorne quieted down for the time being.
The family managed to chat amicably for a few moments.
Although, it was Serena Kane who did most of the talking, with the others only occasionally chiming in.
At six o’clock, Bernard Rhodes came down from upstairs, leaning on a cane.
He scanned the room briefly. Seeing that nearly everyone had arrived, he smiled, returned the younger generation’s greetings, and then gestured expansively. "Everyone, take your seats."
It was rare for Stella Sterling to attend a meal with so many people, let alone a large family affair. She felt somewhat inhibited, and consequently, had little appetite.
Owen Rhodes noticed and, oblivious to everyone else, started placing her favorite dishes into her bowl.
Knowing Stella Sterling liked a little bit of everything, Owen didn’t give her too much, placing just enough of each dish into her bowl for her to have a taste.
To top it off, Owen Rhodes even peeled a shrimp for her, dipped the meat generously in sauce, and placed it in her bowl.
His movements were so fluid, as if he’d done it a thousand times.
In the next moment, his hands were clean, ready to accept a toast from a junior.
Kiana Sterling silently took it all in.
By contrast, Ethan Rhodes’s indifference to her, coupled with the glances he kept stealing toward Stella Sterling, frayed her nerves.
Everyone at the table saw Owen Rhodes’s attentive care.
Serena Kane laughed teasingly. "I never knew Owen, who always looks so aloof, could be so attentive." She nudged Simon Rhodes, who was sitting next to her. "Honey, why don’t you take some notes?"
Simon Rhodes was drinking his soup, and when Serena Kane elbowed him, he inadvertently sloshed some of it from his spoon.
He quickly dabbed at the spill with his napkin, then, with a sigh of resigned helplessness, he placed a chicken drumstick in the bowl of his ever-competitive wife. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Eat this drumstick. You need it."
Serena Kane laughed. "Now that’s more like it."
Then she turned to a preoccupied Ethan Rhodes. "Ethan, this is your first time bringing Kiana to a family banquet, too. Make sure you take good care of her, you hear?"
Ethan Rhodes was lost in who-knows-what thought and didn’t even hear Serena Kane.
Kiana Sterling’s hand tightened under the table. She still had to whisper a reminder to him, "Ethan, Aunt Serena is talking to you."
Ethan Rhodes snapped back to his senses. "Don’t worry, Aunt Serena."
Just then, Bernard Rhodes looked up. "It’s a good thing for a married couple to be close. Since you’ve already gotten your marriage license, it’s about time you had children."
At his age, the old patriarch brought up these topics at every family gathering.
Over on the side, Melody Rhodes and Faye Rhodes, who had been whispering happily to each other, fell silent as soon as Bernard Rhodes spoke.
Seeing her own son’s absent-minded state all evening, Yolanda Thorne also spoke up. "Father is right. Owen is over thirty now. He’s not young anymore. It’s time for him to have children too."
’She refused to believe her son would still be so utterly distracted once Stella Sterling was pregnant.’
Owen Rhodes’s only response was, "Worry about yourself."
