Everything about the living room felt calm and soothing, like a quiet embrace after a long day. Raelynn sat on the plush sofa, a glass of juice in her hand. Across from her, Sloane lounged back in the armchair, her legs crossed elegantly, sipping from her own glass of the same juice. Even though she looked relaxed, there was a quiet energy about her, as though she was constantly observing everything around her.

Raelynn couldn't help but notice how the vibe between them had shifted overnight. Yesterday, she had felt that Sloane was irritating, constantly testing her patience with sharp remarks and an attitude that bordered on intrusive. But now, as they chatted, Raelynn found herself oddly at ease. Sloane, despite her earlier attitude, seemed genuinely invested in this conversation, even showing a softer side by suggesting the juice was good for her pregnancy.

Raelynn sipped her juice, a smile playing on her lips. She had expected living with Sloane to be a constant battle of wills, filled with tension and biting comments. But now, watching Sloane's unexpected kindness, she realized it might not be as difficult as she had feared.

"This is nice," Raelynn said, swirling the juice in her glass. "Did you really have a relationship with Zake?"

Sloane raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Is that so hard to believe?"

Raelynn chuckled softly, leaning forward a little. "Well, I guess not. I just think it's kind of... cool. You're both doctors, right? Must've been interesting."

Sloane rolled her eyes, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks despite her composed demeanor. "Oh, it was something, alright. But that's also why it didn't work. We were too similar—busy, stubborn, and terrible at making time for each other." She shrugged as if dismissing the memory, though there was a flicker of something in her expression that hinted at something else.

Raelynn sensed she might be treading on thin ice and decided not to pry further into Sloane's past with Zake. Instead, she shifted the topic. "What about you and Elion? How long have you known each other?"

A soft laugh escaped Sloane as she leaned back, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass. "Elion and I? Oh, we go way back. Pretty much grew up together."

"Really?" Raelynn asked, her curiosity piqued. "What was he like back then?"

Sloane paused, her lips pursed as she seemed to consider her words. "Hmm... typical young master, I'd say. Arrogant, too sure of himself, but ridiculously charming when he wanted to be." She smirked as she added, "And annoyingly good at getting his way. But he's changed a lot since then."

Raelynn tilted her head, watching Sloane closely. "Changed how?"

For a moment, Sloane hesitated, her fingers gripping the glass a little tighter. She looked away, pretending to show interest in the decorative vase on the coffee table. "Let's just say, life has a way of humbling even the most confident people."

There was something in the way Sloane said it that made Raelynn's stomach tighten with curiosity. She was about to press further when Sloane suddenly raised her glass and took a long sip, avoiding Raelynn's gaze entirely.

The silence stretched awkwardly until Sloane cleared her throat and straightened in her seat. "Anyway, let's talk about something else. Like you and Elion."

Raelynn blinked, caught off guard. "There's nothing to talk about," she said quickly, taking a sip from her glass to buy herself time.

"Really?" Sloane asked, leaning forward with a mischievous glint in her eye. "Come on, you two are going to be parents soon. That's a pretty big deal."

Raelynn sighed, placing her glass down on the table. She hesitated for a moment before blurting out, "Can I ask you something? It's been bugging me for a while."

Sloane raised a brow but nodded, gesturing for her to continue.

"Is Elion... barren?" Raelynn asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sloane froze, her glass halfway to her lips. Her eyes widened in surprise, and she set the glass down carefully before leaning forward, her expression unreadable. "What?"

Raelynn shrugged, feeling a little embarrassed but pushing on. "He keeps denying that the baby is his. He even did a DNA test. It's like he can't believe he could actually get someone pregnant. It's just... strange."

For a long moment, Sloane didn't say anything. Raelynn shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her fingers playing with the edge of her glass. "Well, since you're a doctor and a friend of his, I thought maybe you'd know something about it..." Her voice trailed off, unsure if she'd overstepped.

Sloane remained silent, her gaze fixed on the table, the flicker of an unreadable emotion passing through her eyes. Raelynn swallowed hard. "Forget it," she muttered, her face flushing with embarrassment. "Forget I asked. It's not my business anyway. Why do I care so much?" She sighed, suddenly regretting the whole conversation.

Then, Sloane let out an awkward laugh, making Raelynn raise an eyebrow, before leaning in and lowering her voice. "Okay, listen. This stays between us, alright? Don't go around blabbing about it."

Raelynn nodded eagerly, her heart racing.

"Yes," Sloane admitted, her voice lowering as if sharing a secret. "Elion is... was... barren. At least, that's what everyone believed. That's why your pregnancy is such a big deal. It's practically a miracle."

Raelynn's mouth fell open in shock. "Seriously?"

"Yeah," Sloane said, leaning back and crossing her arms. "That's why he's so protective. He'd do anything to keep the baby safe." After a brief pause, she added quickly, "And, of course, you too. He cares about you."

Raelynn nodded slowly, absorbing the information. She should have felt satisfied—after all, she'd guessed as much from the beginning. But hearing it confirmed by someone close to Elion felt strangely bittersweet.

"I knew it," she muttered, more to herself than to Sloane.

Sloane chuckled, reaching for her glass again. "You're full of surprises, Raelynn. I'll give you that."

As Raelynn sat back, her hand unconsciously moved to her stomach. The confirmation she'd been waiting for finally hit her, leaving her with mixed feelings she couldn't make sense of. One thing was certain, though—this child was more special than she'd ever imagined.
