My CEO Ex: Let Me Go.-Chapter 39
I carefully explained everything that had happened.
It matched the footage from the security cameras.
The male officer was taking notes as I spoke. "So, based on your assessment, the two cars were deliberately targeting you. Are you sure you don’t recognize the driver of the black car?"
"Absolutely sure," I replied.
"What about the driver of the white car? Did you get a good look at his face?"
"No. He was far behind me. I saw him twice in the rearview mirror when I changed lanes, but he was too far away for me to make out any details."
"I understand," the officer said, trying to reassure me. "Don’t worry. We’re already working on identifying the suspect. It shouldn’t take long to track them down."
With cameras everywhere, there’s no way they can hide.
"Thank you," I said.
"You can contact your family now. We didn’t find your phone at the scene..."
"I didn’t bring my phone with me," I replied. "Officer, could you help me call someone?"
"Of course. Just give me the number."
For a moment, I almost gave him Alexander’s number.
He was probably still with Isabella.
A bitter smile touched my lips, and I decided to give Maggie’s number instead.
The phone rang, and the officer handed it to me. Maggie’s voice came through, sounding confused. "Hello, who is this?"
"Maggie, it’s me."
"Mrs. Hawthorne!" Maggie’s voice brightened in surprise. "You left without your phone! But why haven’t you come back yet?"
"I had an accident. Please come to Saint James Hospital and bring me some clothes. Also, my wallet is on my desk in my room."
Maggie gasped. "Mrs. Hawthorne, are you alright? How did this happen? I’m coming right away!"
"My room number is..."
"Building 1, Brain Department, Room 503," the officer added.
"Okay, I’ll be there soon!"
After hanging up, I returned the phone to the officer. "Thank you."
"No problem. We’ll notify you once we catch the suspect."
"Okay."
The officer left.
A doctor came to examine me, confirming what the officer had said earlier. I specifically asked about the baby’s condition.
The doctor reassured me that my injuries weren’t too serious. He’d checked with the WIC doctors about the medication I’d been given and confirmed it wouldn’t affect the pregnancy.
I let out a relieved sigh and then told the doctor, "My housekeeper will be here soon to handle the paperwork. She’s close to my ex-husband, so I’d appreciate it if you could keep my medical records private and not mention the pregnancy to her. Thank you."
"You’re pregnant, but you haven’t told your ex-husband?"
"He’s about to remarry."
The doctor’s expression softened with sympathy.
Such a young, beautiful woman, only a month pregnant, and now her ex-husband was remarrying. It was clear he had cheated.
What kind of man cheats on his gorgeous wife? What a scoundrel!
"Understood," the doctor said.
I lay in the hospital bed, feeling aimless.
There were two other patients in the rooms next to mine.
I was in the middle, so I could hear their conversations with their families.
The woman in the bed next to mine had a benign brain tumor and had already had surgery. She was about to be discharged, and her family’s tone, as well as hers, was relaxed.
The patient in the bed outside was an elderly woman with Intraventricular Hemorrhage. Her son was reluctantly taking care of her, complaining, "Look at how much we’ve already spent on her hospitalization! No matter how much Julian earns, we can’t keep up with these costs..."
I glanced at them, but everything before me was a blur.
Then I noticed someone standing in the doorway.
I looked up, trying to focus on the dark shape in the doorway. After a while, I confirmed it was a person, dressed in all black.
It must be a family member of one of the other patients.
But why were they just standing there, not coming in?
I found it strange. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
The dark figure stepped inside.
He bypassed the outermost bed.
I realized then that he must be a relative of the woman in the bed, probably her husband.
The figure stopped in front of my bed, took a few steps forward, and sat down beside me.
I was startled and instinctively squinted my eyes. But no matter how much I tried, everything still appeared blurry. I tried to focus, attempting to make out who it was. After a moment, I cautiously asked, "You... are you... Alexander?"
"It’s me, Vivienne. What happened to your eyes?" Alexander’s large hand gently cupped my face, his voice filled with concern as he looked at the bandages wrapped around my forehead.
I had been staring at him for a while in silence, and he must’ve found it odd.
When I heard his familiar voice, I was sure it was really him. "There’s blood clotting in my head, pressing against my optic nerve. My vision is blurry, and I can’t see clearly."
Alexander reached out and waved his hand in front of me. "Can you see this?"
I nodded helplessly. "...I can see things, just blurry. I’m not blind."
"How did the accident happen?"
"Today’s the anniversary of my grandfather’s death. I went to the cemetery to pay my respects. On the way back, someone cut me off, and I got rear-ended." I quickly summarized the incident and then asked, "How did you get here?"
"I was at home when Maggie told me about the accident, so I came right away."
He’d heard I was driving to the cemetery in the afternoon, and when dinner time came and I still hadn’t returned, he tried calling me but found my phone at home. When he heard about the accident, he immediately drove over.
"When I got here, Maggie was still cleaning up, so I was a little late. Wait here. I’ll get you moved to a private room."
"Okay." I wasn’t too comfortable staying in a room with other people.
Alexander left the room.
The old woman’s son leaned in, speaking in a low voice. “Is that your ex-husband, or did you find someone new?”
“Ex-husband?” I raised an eyebrow.
“He seems to treat you well. Why’d you two divorce?”
“Treat me well? He was with his mistress every day while I was sick.”
“Wow, didn’t see that coming. He seemed so decent.”
I couldn’t help but laugh a little.
Alexander definitely had a way of making himself seem charming. I thought, maybe that’s part of why I was drawn to him back then—his looks.
A few moments later, Alexander returned and helped me out of bed, guiding me to the private room. “Is there any other injury besides your head?”
I shook my head. “No.”
“Get plenty of rest for the next few days. Don’t worry about work.”
“I’ve really had the worst luck lately. I’ve been to the hospital more times than I can count.”
“Take care of yourself.” Alexander opened the door, steadying me as I walked in and sat down on the bed. “Are you hungry? What do you want to eat?”
The thought of the phone call earlier crossed my mind, and without thinking, I said, “I want to eat the food you make.”
The private room had a small kitchen area.
When there was no response from him, I gave a small, self-deprecating smile. “Sorry, I forgot. You don’t cook.”
I felt a little embarrassed for saying that.
