My Demon Wife In The Apocalypse: I Can Control Minds!-Chapter 85 - 84- I’m Immortal, After All
Chapter 84- I’m Immortal, After All
"Hah... Hah... Hah..." Breathing heavily, Jack stared at Luna. Even though he felt as if the entire world was spinning around him, he was shockingly starting to calm down rapidly. His rushed thoughts and fear consumed him for a while. But, seeing Luna’s peaceful body, it calmed his nerves completely. It was as if she were telling him to remain calm, as he always is.
It wasn’t Jack’s nature to be like this. Panicked, far from collected, and even very prone to mistakes. For him, thinking rationally and remaining calm was half the solution. People only make mistakes when their minds are occupied with other thoughts.
"..." He pursed his lips as he slowly moved his hand and put it on Luna’s chest. For some reason, at that moment, when things seemed to go the worst way possible, Jack’s mind came up with an idea. An idea so stupid that he didn’t even know why he even entertained it.
But, whether that was merely a gut feeling or something else, Jack’s instincts told him to simply try it. Luna was clinically dead at that moment, and any attempts to save her are very much needed. Even if said attempts are failures.
Closing his eyes, Jack exhaled as he started channelling his Aether slowly and carefully around his body. Then, he slowly guided it to the palm of his hand. The energy concentrated there, forming a halo around his hand. Then, the boy shockingly started injecting the energy into Luna’s body.
Usually, such a thing would make her body completely kick the energy out as a defensive mechanism. But, since she was technically dead, her body didn’t react, and Jack could easily move his Aether through her body and do whatever he wanted.
As his Aether seeped through into her body, Jack received a load of information in his head. Her body structure, her muscles, veins, bones, tissue, and organs. He could feel it all to great detail. The load of information would’ve easily crushed a normal brain, but with Jack’s way stronger mental force, he was able to digest it and even analyse it on his own.
’The bleeding spot is here... It’s... more or less not life-threatening anymore. But... Her heart went into a state of shock and then stopped because of it. I need to move it again.’ He mused. He didn’t know if this was really a good idea or not, to try and control someone’s blood flow with his Aether. It could very much have an opposite effect.
But, Jack was desperate, and he would rather do everything he could think of than give up and let Luna die. He would do anything... No matter what it is.
As the Aether clustered around the heart, Jack put all his focus into gently pressing the heart. He squeezed it with the energy, then released, and then he squeezed again. The blood started flowing in and out of the heart. At the same time, the rest of his Aether started fueling Luna’s depleted pool. The more he fueled it, the more Aether in her body started flowing on its own.
’Please... Just please...’ He frowned as he kept the same rhythm and focus for a few moments. It was extremely straining on him, and with his brutal injuries, depleted Aether, and everything else, it made it even harder. Beads of sweat rolled down his dirty face. He wanted to stop, his body begged him to stop, but... He refused.
’I’m not going to let you die. Not for what you did to me. You hear me, Luna?’
"..."
"W-What are you doing?"
At that moment, Emi noticed the situation and asked through her tears. However, the boy didn’t reply; he couldn’t even hear her.
’You won’t have it easy. I didn’t have it easy, and I can’t let you have it easy either.’
All of Jack’s energy flowed out of his body into hers.
’You have made me feel different, and then broke that oath.’
*BADUMP*
’You have given me a reason to step out of my shell, and then took it away when I did.’
*BADUMP*
’You have taken me with you, and then pushed me away when I stretched my hand back.’
*BADUMP*
’You won’t die until I see it fit!’
At that moment, as if in response to Jack’s thoughts, he suddenly heard something inside Luna. Without squeezing it himself, the heart suddenly made a beat on its own. Jack stopped and listened. It beat again. Then again.
The blood started flowing on its own, and the Aether kicked into full motion, rushing to all the main organs to start the rapid healing process. All the organs started functioning again, and the muscles started contracting and spasming as if they had a breath of life.
"Cough, cough... Cough, cough..." Then, Luna’s eyes suddenly shot open as she started coughing, tossing to the side.
"..."
Everyone looked and then froze. They couldn’t believe their eyes. After coughing blood and spit for a few moments, Luna looked up dazedly. She could only see one silhouette, and even through her hazy eyes, she knew who it was.
"... Ja...ck?" She muttered with a dry throat.
At that moment, without hesitation, the boy lunged forward and wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug.
"You idiot... You absolute idiot..." He muttered as his arms started shaking subtly.
"Oh my god! Luna!!!" Emi’s legs crumbled to the ground. "You’re alive! You’re really alive!"
Alex and Evan were completely stunned. They had no words to say, only overwhelming emotions.
"H-Huh..."
As if the hug gave her a jolt of energy, Luna realised what was happening. "J-Ja... cough, cough..."
Her eyes widened. ’Is he hugging me? Why is he hugging me? I can’t remember anything that happened earlier.’
The memories started coming back to her, and the last time she was conscious was when she was running through the base trying to evacuate the people inside. Then everything suddenly went black, and she fell.
After a few moments of a tight hug, Jack finally pulled away and looked around. "We can’t talk here; we have to leave this place. Everything has gone to shit. Many died, and even more will die soon. We can’t do much beyond this."
Saving weaklings was possible, but it was pointless since they were going to die by the pulses of Aether pumping into the world. As Liliana told him the very first moment they met, the world was going to eliminate all the weak organic creatures, and only the stronger ones would survive.
It was an effective erasure of all that it deems useless.
Without wasting time, Jack stood up on his healthy leg and then picked up Luna in his arms.
"Heh!" The girl blushed as she felt Jack’s warmth around her. For a second, the girl thought she was still dreaming or perhaps in paradise where her beloved would hug and touch her so often.
"Let’s go!"
"*Sniff* Mmm, let’s leave this place."
With that, the group started running again. Jumping over several large cracks, they made their way outside, right before the ground started sinking down under the immense pressure of the earthquake.
There, they found many survivors who were lucky enough to escape in time. However, the number of citizens has been cut extremely short. Only 10% or so of them remained alive, while the rest were either dead or still stuck in there.
Screams of fear echoed in the area as they clustered around one another. Staring around in morbid despair. They watched the only safe place they had in the world crumble before their eyes and along with it, many of them died. Many family members, many loved ones of all ages.
"Alex!"
"Emi! Evan! My children!"
Fortunately for Jack’s group, all their parents were able to escape in time, and they were reunited with their children again.
’This area isn’t safe... But moving everyone away is way too risky.’ He muttered. ’Besides... The insects are on their way... We are far from done.’
Approaching a relatively safe corner, Jack put Luna down and crouched next to her. "Stay right here and take a moment to catch your breath. You were dead for more than a minute back there."
"Dead?"
"Yes, your heart stopped. I... was able to somehow revive you." He said. He still didn’t know what exactly his Aether did differently, but he was glad that it worked. He never felt more relieved in his life before. It was a sensation he would remember for the rest of his life.
’What got into me at that moment... That feeling... Don’t tell me...’
Realising what it could mean, Jack frowned and shook his head. He didn’t believe that he was indeed still in love with Luna. That was long ago; he was different now.
"Anyway, we are still not safe. The insects are going to attack again. I’m going to try and stop them myself."
"Alone...?"
"Is there another choice. The others need to stay with the group and protect them from behind."
"You’re going to die..."
Jack stood up and dusted his clothes. "I was that close to imminent death. Perhaps I’m immortal, after all."
