Chapter 108: Reputation

Investigator Lee suddenly felt goosebumps from the tone of Caden’s voice. They left Primrose without knowing what the Crown Prince’s words meant.

"Sir, what did the Crown Prince tell you?" Investigator Keisha asked.

"Nothing. Let’s just head home for now. Your families are waiting."

In Primrose, Caden, Elijah, and Lucas were at the bar. They were joined by the Jackson twins, Stephen and Skyler.

"I’m sorry for making you remember of that day." Caden said sincerely to Elijah.

"You don’t have to. It was my decision." Elijah smiled.

"What did you and that old man talk about? He left quietly." Lucas asked, curiosity piqued.

Caden took a sip of the wine from the glass and smirked.

"That man was a friend of my grandfather."

"Benjamin?" Stephen frowned.

Caden shook his head. "No. Matthew Forelli. He was a previous member of the Forelli Clan until he disappeared after betraying my grandfather."

Caden gritted his teeth. His grip tightened on the glass he was holding. His face was a mixture of hatred and sorrow.

"He was the man sent by my grandfather to warn my grandmother, Lucia. The letter he gave her was a fake one. It was supposed to be an order to leave the apartment where they lived, but he replaced it by writing that Matthew Forelli wanted to meet her."

"How did you find out?" Lucas asked.

"My grandmother, Princess Catherine, was a captive of the Trekker Clan for more than twenty years. She saw that investigator two years after her captivity. I will never forget his face. All the enemies of our clan and the royal family, their faces were carved in my thoughts."

"Then what’s your plan?" Skyler asked.

"Nothing. For now. I didn’t tell him what I knew. I just warned him."

The twins deeply sighed. "I still can’t believe you’re the new boss of the Forelli Clan. Are you not scared?" Skyler asked again.

"I’m afraid of losing the people important to me. That’s why I keep fighting. My hands are tainted with the blood of those who made our families suffer. I am not proud of it, but I also don’t regret it."

"What if we join the mafia? Your clan?" Elijah exclaimed.

Lucas and the others were surprised by Elijah’s sudden suggestion, but they didn’t seem against it.

"No. I had a reason to join them. I had to accept the role to protect us, the clan, and Flousia."

"How about Caroline?"Stephen asked.

"What about her?" Caden frowned.

"She told me about the Castello Clan."

Caden took a deep breath. "She would be the one to decide if she wanted to be the successor. I am not in a position to control her."

"Why did the Castello’s choose her as the successor? She’s a girl. And she was never trained to fight. You have to do something about your sister." Elijah almost yelled.

Caden took another sigh. "Do you think I did nothing? I talked to my Aunt, but they already decided, so it’s already up to Caroline."

"Then why don’t you give her a title? If she becomes a member of the royal family with a title, the Castellos will change their minds." Elijah suggested.

Caden laughed. "Believe me, I tried. Only the King could acknowledge the legitimacy of birthright, but he would never do it."

"Why?" Elijah could not believe Caden.

"My mother asked him not to. It was a promise between siblings. My sister is a royal with no title. Mom wanted her to live as a normal high school girl. She didn’t want her to end up like Mireya. That was the reason they kept her a secret. But my mother had no idea that my father’s clan was trying to make Caroline’s life a mess."

"That’s the more reason you should stop it from happening." Elijah insisted.

Caden glared at his cousin. "Is it you or is it Mireya?"

"Both. Mireya is ranting. She said she would disappear forever if you let it happen."

Caden rubbed his temple. "I didn’t say I’m giving up. But it will be Caroline’s decision in the end and not mine."

"Enough of that. Let Caroline decide for herself. Let’s focus on Investigator Lee. We have to make sure that he would stop the investigation." Lucas cut the conversation.

"Two days. Someone will come here in two days." Caden grinned.

"And who would that be?" Stephen asked.

"Someone with a clear name and a good reputation among those four investigators."

And like what Caden said, someone from the investigation team came to visit Primrose just after forty-eight hours.

"You got the message, I’m impressed." Caden smiled.

The investigator let out a deep sigh. "I’m not here to side with you. I just wanted to know if the story is true."

"I will drop the formalities, Keisha. It wasn’t a story, it’s the truth. He was an accessory to the murder of Lucia Richards. He was a former member of the Forelli Clan, but he betrayed Matthew Forelli."

Caden threw a brown envelope on the table in front of Keisha.

"That wasn’t his only crime. Inside that envelope is the evidence of all his crimes. I am entrusting them to you."

"Why me?" Keisha asked.

"I checked your background and you’re clean. So I assume you will do the right thing."

Keisha couldn’t believe what she found out about Investigator Lee. She admired the old man for the longest time because she thought he was someone righteous.

"Are you asking me to betray him?"

Caden chuckled. "So you think doing the right thing is betrayal? Giving justice to those people he ruined is not betrayal. And besides, it’s your job to catch him. If you won’t do it, then I will. But I’m not sure if I can keep him alive."

"Are you planning to kill him?" She asked.

"I had a plan, but I changed my mind. And it all depends on what you will do next."

Keisha nodded. "I do have one question."

"Go on."

"Did you kill Benjamin Miller?"

Caden smiled. "What do you think?"

Keisha shook her head. "Honestly, I don’t think you killed him. But I know you know who it was."

"Then, I thank you for not suspecting me. This conversation is over and pretend we never met."

Keisha left with uncertainty. She was unsure if the information Caden gave her was enough to put Investigator Lee behind bars. She was still hesitant, but she swore to catch the bad guys when she chose to be an investigator.

"Hey, Keisha! What’s wrong? You’re quiet." One of her friends asked.

She went out to drink with her friends after meeting Caden.

"Nothing. I was just thinking of someone."

Her friends glanced at each other. "It’s a guy right?"

Keisha frowned. "What?"

"You’ve always been so nosy when we go out. Even when you argue with your sister or if you’re handling a difficult case, you never had the same look as now. You look like someone who just saw her crush. You’re daydreaming."

"No, I’m not!"

"Yes, you are! Who’s the lucky guy? Tell us!" Her friends giggled.

Keisha took a deep sigh. "Yes, it’s a guy but it’s complicated."

"Oh, come on girl! Spill it!"

She knew her friends would never stop asking her and they looked so excited for her.

"He’s a person of interest in a murder case we’re handling."

The girls were surprised. "Are you crazy? Why would you have a crush on someone who could possibly be a killer?"

"As I said, he’s just a person of interest not a suspect. I mean not yet. But I don’t think he killed the man."

"W–Wait! Are you talking about the murder of Benjamin Miller or Jonathan Trekker? Whatever his name is."

Keisha nodded. "Yeah."

"Oh, my! I think I know your crush! It’s the Crown Prince of Flousia! That super hottie blonde guy!"

Keisha’s eyes widened. Her friend, Jaira, was a news anchor, so she knew something about the murder.

"You really are crazy! He’s engaged. And did you see his fiance? She’s beautiful, she’s perfect!" Bettina, her other friend who was a high school teacher.

"Hey, guys. Stop it! Let’s not forget the real issue. The guy might be the killer. So I don’t think it’s right for an investigator to be attracted to him. Besides, he’s too young for you."

Keisha glared at Moana, her friend who was the owner of the bar.

"I’m just human, you know. I didn’t expect him to look like that in person."

"Like what?" The three girls stared at her and looked so excited.

"I don’t know how to describe him. But those rich kids were a lot different. They looked like those from animes and webtoons. Caden Richards’ eyes were like crystals and I couldn’t take my eyes off him."

In Primrose, Caden and the others were listening from Keisha’s conversation with her friends.

"What’s on your mind?" Lucas asked when he saw Caden smirking

"Nothing. I think I can use that investigator."

"Use her? How? By using her feelings?" Elijah asked.
