The man across was wearing a white shirt, seemingly having been leaning on the balcony for a while, his fingertips flicking a lighter, his gaze unreservedly landing on the opposite balcony.
When Su Nian saw him, he was taking a cigarette out of his mouth, exhaling a puff of white smoke, as if he hadn’t expected her to come out, his gaze firmly fixed on her.
Watching him across, slightly desolate, Su Nian momentarily lost in thought.
Could it be that every night, he watched her window with such a lonely expression?
Her heartbeat became irate amidst the night and his gaze, realizing her own improper staring, Su Nian was the first to avert her eyes, abandoning the idea of getting some fresh air and hastily turned back into the room.
“Su Nian.” He called out to her, his voice gentle in the quiet night, yet clearly reaching her ears.
...
Su Nian paused her steps for a second, only for a second, then continued walking inside, closing the glass door between the room and the balcony, pulling the curtains, blocking his view.
Now between them, there seemed to be nothing good to say, the more they talked, the more Su Nian feared she would fall into his schemes.
Having been back for so many days, yet she had not seen that woman, her first child was harmed by them to an unknown fate, now she could not be careless about Su Zhen and Su Bao.
Shen Hanxiu stubbed out the cigarette in his hand, his gaze still fixed on the opposite side, able to see only the light emitted from the room through the curtain.
He could never understand, what exactly made Su Nian so afraid of him, constantly avoiding him.
It started to rain, Shen Hanxiu sighed lightly blending with the night rain, turning back into the house.
Su Nian sat by the table, hearing the sound of rain hitting the window, looked up at the window, but couldn’t see anything through the curtain.
Was he still there?
A downpour suddenly arrived, the sound of rain hitting the ground assaulting her eardrums, Su Nian unable to focus on work anymore, hesitated then stood up, walked to the window and lifted a small gap in the cloth curtain, her gaze probing towards the opposite side.
The light in the opposite room was on, the glass door was not closed, the room’s interior was vaguely visible, but the rain was too heavy to see clearly, only knowing that he had returned to the room.
Lightning illuminated the night sky, “Boom—” thunder roared beside her.
Su Nian’s body trembled slightly, and at the end of the thunder, she heard a message tone from her bed.
Returning to the room, she picked up her phone to check, it was from him.
Go to sleep
Just three brief words, without even a punctuation, leaving her unable to guess if his tone was a stern command or tender concern.
Just because of these three words, Su Nian’s heart warmed in the cold rainy night.
She had initially planned to continue working, but because of these three words, a faint smile appeared on her lips, then she stood up, shut down the computer, ensured the doors and windows were secure against the wind, and then turned off the lights in the room and lay down on the bed.
Kiddo’s dad, good night.
Shen Hanxiu couldn’t wait for her reply, even a simple good night seemed too much for her to give, but seeing that shortly after the message was sent, her room’s light turned off, his face showed a hint of warmth.
He was tired of cold, lonely nights alone, when would he be able to hold her in his arms again?
The next day, the rain continued, showing no signs of lessening.
Su Nian got up and woke up the two children.
Even though it was raining heavily, Liang Yizhou still came early to prepare breakfast for them.
“Nian’nian, let me drive you to the company later, it’s raining so hard, I’m not comfortable with you driving alone.”
Just as Liang Yizhou finished speaking, a man’s faint voice came from the door: “If I drive her, would you be relieved?”
