Chapter 146: 146 Battery
Chapter 146: 146 Battery
Chen Xu suddenly felt playful and decided to play a joke. After Bai Jinxuan finished speaking, he rested the electromagnetic pulse gun on his shoulder and asked, “Are you, confessing your feelings to me?”
“Huh?”
Bai Jinxuan looked up at him, her expression becoming somewhat puzzled. Something about the script seemed off.
Chen Xu continued, “I know I’m outstanding, and it’s no surprise to me that you’d fall for me at first sight.”
“What the heck?” Bai Jinxuan’s eyes widened, realizing she might have misunderstood something very important.
“It’s just, I didn’t expect you would choose such a moment to confess your feelings. Even if it’s uncontrollable, it’s still a bit inappropriate, right?”
Bai Jinxuan shook her head, “No, I didn’t…”
“Honestly, it’s the first time I’ve had a girl crying and begging to date me. It puts me in a tough spot,” Chen Xu said, almost bursting into laughter.
Bai Jinxuan stuttered, “I, I, I didn’t…”
“Otherwise, should I just reluctantly agree to your request?”
“No, no, no, it’s not like that…” By now, Bai Jinxuan realized she had misunderstood him. Thinking about what she had just said made her incredibly embarrassed.
But now, even a hundred explanations wouldn’t clear it up. Should she admit she thought he had ulterior motives and used stalling tactics to avoid getting hurt?
At that thought, she almost wanted to cry.
“Okay, I’ll stop teasing you. I have a girlfriend, and we are very much in love. You, just give up on this idea.” Chen Xu finished speaking and, ignoring her, moved on to examine the robot.
Meanwhile, Bai Jinxuan was still dumbfounded.
She should have felt relieved by the outcome, but why did it feel so unsatisfying?
He actually rejected me?
It was all just a misunderstanding, but still, he rejected me?
This thought endlessly replayed in her mind.
…
Chen Xu took out a flashlight and shone it on the robot lying on the ground, which looked almost indistinguishable from a human.
He touched it, feeling the soft yet resilient material, not quite like human muscle, probably silicone. The robot was holding a kitchen knife with the store tag still attached.
From this evidence, it was clear that it wasn’t up to any good.
“Could it be a storyline where robots rebel against humans?”
He speculated but couldn’t quite figure out what that had to do with the dense fog.
Perhaps, had the robots created it as a weapon against humans?
Then, he took the kitchen knife and pressed it against the robot’s neck, slashing hard to cut open its upper body.
Just then, Bai Jinxuan came over and saw the scene, startling her greatly. With a snap, the lantern in her hand fell to the ground.
Chen Xu turned to see her pale face, clearly frightened badly, and shook his head before continuing with the dissection.
Before long, he had removed the silicone-like material from the robot’s surface and tossed it aside, revealing the complete metal structure inside.
Truthfully, the overall structure was beyond his understanding.
However, his goal wasn’t to study the robot’s structure. He quickly found what he needed, a battery, embedded in the robot’s lower back, about the size of a portable hard drive.
The robot weighed almost 200 pounds. Just before the encounter, through the monitor, he had witnessed its swift movement and astonishing power.
And all of these actions were powered by such a small battery, truly high-tech.
“What are you doing?”
Bai Jinxuan summoned courage, approached carefully avoiding the silicone pieces on the ground, and asked.
Chen Xu set the battery aside and said, “Checking for anything useful in it. Go get my backpack.”
She came over wanting to see if she could help. Hearing this, she quickly stood up, went to get his backpack, and upon lifting it, was surprised by its unexpected heaviness. Chen Xu had been carrying it all day. Wasn’t he tired?
With this thought in mind, she hurriedly handed the backpack to Chen Xu.
“Thanks.”
Chen Xu opened the backpack and took out a small tool kit, which contained an entire set of screwdrivers with various heads including Phillips, flat, hex in and out, and more.
Moreover, despite the small size of the screwdriver’s body, it was electric and extremely convenient for disassembling things.
In nearly ten minutes, he had dismantled the main parts of the robot and began analyzing them. He looked back at Bai Jinxuan and said, “You can’t help much here, go rest for now.”
“Oh.” She stood up again, thought for a moment, brought over a few more lanterns from the other side, turned them on, and the area brightened significantly.
Then, she pulled the bed close to the corridor where he could see her, lay down, watched his busy silhouette, and gradually her eyelids grew heavier until she unknowingly fell asleep.

The next day, when Bai Jinxuan woke up, she found the lighting to be very bright. Chen Xu was no longer in his initial position. Rubbing her eyes, she got up and looked around, only to find that the bright light was coming from an LED bulb hanging from the ceiling.
The bulb was connected to a device on the desk via a wire.
Chen Xu was lying on his bed, sleeping. When she looked over, he happened to open his eyes. Their eyes met, and her face inexplicably reddened as she said, “Good morning.”
“Morning,” he replied.
Chen Xu grabbed his phone and checked the time. It was already 7 a.m., so he got up.
Bai Jinxuan also stood up, pointed at the device on the desk, and asked, “Is that the thing you made last night? What does it do?”
“With this, we now have electricity,” Chen Xu said as he put on his socks. “From now on, you can use it to heat water for a shower.”
“Really?” Bai Jinxuan’s eyes lit up.
“Don’t touch it, be careful of electric shocks,” Chen Xu warned as he walked to the restroom in the office. While he was washing up, he heard some noises from outside.
When he came out, he saw her standing on the escalator, mouth wide open, letting out a long “Ah—.”
He asked, “What are you doing?”
Bai Jinxuan stopped and turned around saying, “Practicing vocalization.”
Chen Xu said with amusement, “While your dedication to your craft is commendable, haven’t you thought about the possibility of attracting other robots?”
“This—” she hadn’t actually thought of that, and said a bit conflicted, “But my vocal teacher said I have poor natural conditions, and if I don’t practice hard, I won’t keep up with others.”
“Is now really the time to worry about this? Right now, we should be thinking about how to survive in this dangerous environment,” Chen Xu said, somewhat irritated.
“Oh,” she acknowledged and then asked, “So when can I start practicing?”
“Let’s talk about it once we’re safe,” Chen Xu waved his hand dismissively.
There was no shortage of food in the supermarket; having the battery made cooking much more convenient. They could hook up an induction cooker to an extension board to boil stuff.
While Bai Jinxuan was washing up, he cooked several packages of instant noodles for breakfast.
After the events of yesterday, he was in a good mood and made a serving for her as well.
However, as he waited, after finishing his portion, she still hadn’t come out.
“Could something have happened?” he wondered, glancing at the time. It had already been thirty minutes. He stood up and walked towards the office, calling out, “Hey, are you okay?”
“Ah, what’s up?”
As he reached the door, Bai Jinxuan’s voice came from the restroom.
He asked, “What are you doing, taking so long?”
She replied, “I’ll be right out.”
The restroom door was open, so he walked over and saw her holding a makeup mirror, actually doing her makeup, and was immediately astonished, “You spent all this time doing makeup?”
“Did I?” She held a black round brush in her hand, sweeping it across her cheeks, “It doesn’t usually take long, just over an hour, normally.”
Chen Xu felt a sense of helplessness, unable to comprehend her thought process, “With everything that’s going on, you’re in the mood for makeup?”
“Okay, done,” she said, putting away the makeup brush and the assortment of bottles and jars in front of her, while adding, “As a public figure, I must always present the best version of myself. Makeup is the basic etiquette.”
“Under these circumstances, who are you putting makeup on for? It’s not like I haven’t seen you without it.”
“Even in private, I cannot afford any slack; this is how good habits are formed.”
Chen Xu shook his head and remarked, “It’s good to have professionalism, but you need to pick your moments.”
“I’ll shorten the makeup time to fifteen minutes next time,” she offered.
Bai Jinxuan looked at him questioningly, then quickly added, “Then, ten minutes?”
“Just don’t hold me back, or I won’t bother with whether you live or die,” Chen Xu turned and walked out of the office.
She followed him out promising, “Five minutes, I can’t do any less than that, it wouldn’t be enough time even to apply foundation.”
Chen Xu ignored her and went to pack up.
She walked out carrying her makeup case, saw the noodles on the table, and shook her head saying, “I can’t, instant noodles will make me gain weight.”
Chen Xu said irritably, “Then just throw it away.”
“Well, I guess I’ll eat,” she hesitated for a while, then sat down, took a bite, and complained, “The noodles are all soggy, tastes awful.”
At that moment, Chen Xu thought to himself that he must have been out of his mind to find her somewhat cute the previous night.
He said coldly, “No more complaints, or you’ll make your own next time.”
Seeing that he seemed genuinely angry, Bai Jinxuan dared not say more and focused on eating. She was indeed hungry and quickly finished a bowl of noodles.
By then, Chen Xu had finished packing and said, “Let’s go.”
She hurriedly grabbed her belongings and followed him.
