Chapter 201: I want to see you
Chapter 201: I want to see you
Thump, thump, thump…
At the second branch of the 2003 Noodle Shop, Secretary Jin was making her rounds, holding a notebook and pondering, occasionally jotting down notes with a pen.
As she passed the office door, she heard a noise coming from inside and turned to glance at the clock hanging on the hall wall; it was already six in the evening.
At noon, Chen Xu had hung a punching bag in the office. He had been punching it for over an hour now, and the thumping sound hadn’t stopped.
She thought for a moment, closed her notebook, and knocked on the door.
“Come in,” came Chen Xu’s somewhat muffled voice, the barrage of punches continuing unabated.
She pushed the door open, stepped inside, and saw Chen Xu wearing a black tank top, landing a heavy punch on the bag and exhaling a long breath before finally stopping.
He was soaked in sweat, his tank top completely drenched. He grabbed a towel, wiped his face and hair, and asked, “What’s up?”
Secretary Jin naturally picked up a water cup from the desk and handed it to him, saying, “Jinyun Group sent a message, they want to meet with us again tomorrow.”
Chen Xu took the water cup she handed over, took a sip, and said, “Fine, you set the time.”
“Okay.”
Seeing that she didn’t leave after speaking, Chen Xu asked, “Is there something else?”
Secretary Jin said, “Normally at this time, you would go to pick up Mr. Luo. The workday is already over, but you didn’t go, did you two have a fight?”
“No, we are fine,” Chen Xu replied while drinking water.
Secretary Jin continued, “Do you want me to send a gift over for you?”
“That won’t be necessary, thanks for your concern,” Chen Xu responded.
Secretary Jin nodded, “Then I’ll head out first.”
As she was about to leave, Chen Xu suddenly stopped her, “Wait, tomorrow morning, help me order a bouquet of roses to be sent over.”
“Got it,” she replied and closed the door.
Chen Xu set the water cup down, walked over to the punching bag, gave it a shove, and watched it sway in the air, which made him think about last night’s events.
From last night until now, he hadn’t been able to contact Luo Xiyun. No replies to his WeChat messages and no answers to his phone calls. He was starting to get annoyed.
In this matter, he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.
When he was with Yang Jinxia, he didn’t know about their relationship.
Later, when he got together with Luo Xiyun, it was only several months after Yang Jinxia had disappeared.
The whole thing could only be described as a series of unfortunate misunderstandings.
He could understand Luo Xiyun’s feelings, but apologizing and trying to pleasurably coax her wasn’t something he could bring himself to do.
Since she didn’t want to see him right now, he thought he should give her a couple of days to cool off.
However, doing nothing didn’t seem right either. Secretary Jin’s suggestion reminded him; sending a bouquet of flowers was already the most he felt he could do.
Ding, ding…
His phone on the desk sounded, and he quickly walked over to pick it up, taken aback that it wasn’t Luo Xiyun, but Bai Jinxuan.
She had sent a video; he could see her wearing a black hat, her mask pulled down under her chin, laughing happily.
He instinctively looked at the closed door, turned down the volume, and then clicked play.
After a buffering for a second or two, a somewhat noisy sound came through, and as she walked and filmed, she first focused the camera on her face and then on the surrounding environment.
It was clear she was in an airport, surrounded by people like staff and security, and beyond them were fans, a dark mass of them, shouting her name loudly; the scene looked quite spectacular.
The video ended soon after.
Then, she sent a voice message, which he tapped on and then held the phone to his ear to listen, “Guess where I am right now?”
Her tone carried a hint of smugness.
Chen Xu didn’t need to search online to guess, he responded via text, “Why didn’t you mention you were coming over a few days ago?”
“I wanted to surprise you.”
“Are you here to record a show?”
“I’m here to record a song, and I’ll be around for several days… I… I want to see you.”
Chen Xu pulled the phone away from his ear and typed a message on the screen, quickly deleting it, thought for a moment, typed a few more words, and then deleted those as well.
He stared at his phone and couldn’t help but sigh.
Now was not a good time to meet. It had been just over a month since Bai Jinxuan’s confession incident. Afterward, a lot of supposedly leaked news had surfaced – some claimed she had gotten too deep into a film script; others said the man she liked had already died. There were also former classmates and neighbors suggesting the man referred to somebody specific.
The wave had lasted nearly a month.
Bai Jinxuan told him that many of these stories were spun by the company to diminish the presence of the man she liked. After all, many fans couldn’t accept their idol dating anyone.
She couldn’t come forward to clarify that it was all made up either; that would be like making a fool out of everyone and could hugely damage her popularity. So, she had no choice but to stop responding to the matter and instead hire people to push the narrative that the man had already died.
Such an outcome was what her fans could best accept. After all, she had a man she liked, but he was gone, leaving no chance for them ever to be together. It also gave her the image of a deeply loving person.
Before this promotional tactic began, Bai Jinxuan had asked for his opinion very seriously. It only proceeded because he said he didn’t mind.
After all these maneuvers, her popularity hadn’t waned; rather, it had flamed higher, trending on social media every other day. Now, he would sometimes check Weibo for news about her. Just yesterday, the announcement of her new song had hit the trending list, blazingly hot, which hardly seemed rational.
Under such circumstances, meeting her was still a bit risky. Who knows how many paparazzi were lurking around her, ready to snap a photo? If caught, he might be immediately exposed.

But he really couldn’t bear to refuse her and found himself in a dilemma.
Then, another message came in.
He opened it, “I was just saying, don’t feel troubled. There will always be other opportunities, after all.”
He seemed to envision her feigned nonchalant expression, his heart skipped a beat, and he replied, “Which hotel are you staying at?”
“I’m not at a hotel. My mother and I purchased two adjacent apartments under our names. From now on, when I’m here, I’ll be staying there.”
Chen Xu suddenly felt pressured. Given the housing prices in this city, she had bought two apartments in one go. He had to think twice even about buying a car; the disparity was just too great.
“When the time comes, I will rent my mother’s apartment to you and sign a lease,” she suggested. “That way, you can come and go in the complex freely, and our meetings won’t be disturbed by anyone.”
Chen Xu was taken aback, unsure how to describe his feelings. She really thought things through to have a safe place to meet him.
He sent a message. “Let’s meet tonight.”
……
With a rumble, thunder sounded.
The weather in summer was capricious; it was clear all day, but at night, it started to rain.
Due to the heavy rain, there were fewer customers in the noodle shop. Secretary Jin hadn’t left yet; she sat on the office sofa, organizing the materials needed for the negotiation with Jinyun Group the next day.
Finally, she finished, stretched her stiff neck, packed up her computer, and prepared to report to Chen Xu. She stepped outside, didn’t see Chen Xu, and asked one of the staff, “Where’s the boss?”
“He’s gone out.”
“Did he drive?”
“No, he took a car. He was even wearing a hat, looking a bit mysterious.”
“That’s fine.” Secretary Jin was somewhat puzzled. The yellow Porsche was clearly parked outside; why hadn’t he driven and instead taken a taxi?
Despite her curiosity, she hadn’t the energy to delve deeper. She could always report in the morning. After informing the manager, she left the noodle shop and drove home.
She drove a white Golf and didn’t live too far away; she reached the gates of her complex in half an hour.
It was an upscale complex, and she had bought her apartment here with all her savings just a couple of years ago. With her salary, the mortgage was manageable. However, her dad had been suddenly hospitalized last year, forcing her to quit her job to take care of him.
Eventually, her father passed away. After handling the affairs back home, she returned to the city and found that getting a new job was not so easy.
Her previous work had been as a secretary, and big companies preferred to groom their own. Smaller companies couldn’t afford the salary she was used to, and she couldn’t provide convincing work experience for other positions. It was an awkward situation.
With no other options, she went back to her former employer, Luo Xiyun. In the end, she was referred to Chen Xu, and got a short-term employment contract, which meant income, though barely enough to prevent starving. To be honest, if she hadn’t accepted this job, she wouldn’t have managed next month’s mortgage.
Thinking about her current boss, she was quite satisfied. Although his assets weren’t high, he was undoubtedly promising. During this time, she had compiled data on customer flow, turnover, and profits for the two noodle shops, creating graphs. The growth in all the data was very impressive.
Moreover, the business model of the noodle shop was easy to promote.
If a partnership with Jinyun Group could be secured, Chen Xu’s business was poised for a leap in development. Based on this judgment, she now genuinely regarded Chen Xu as her boss, putting in one hundred and twenty percent effort in her work. Her goal was to turn her short-term employment into a long-term job.
In addition, through their time together, she found Chen Xu to be a good person who respected her enough. With Luo Xiyun’s influence, she didn’t worry about him harboring ill intentions. Where else could she find such a boss?
As she pondered, she took the elevator to her apartment door and was about to use her key to enter, when she noticed that the door to the neighboring apartment opened. Curiosity piqued, she couldn’t help but glance over.
The next-door apartment had been sold over a month ago, reportedly to a big celebrity, but for over a month, no one had seemed to move in, nor did she know which celebrity.
The woman coming out now looked like an ordinary young woman, not like a star.
Not wanting to pry, she opened her door and entered her home.
