Chapter 119: Aftermath

Violet

I must have lost consciousness after leaving the Red Woods. It was the only explanation for waking here, in his room, with no memory of the journey back.

I blinked, taking in the familiar ceiling.

His room?

I tried to sit up and immediately cradled my forehead at the throbbing headache. I remained still, trying to get myself together when the ache started to subside.

There was a strange stiffness in my body that followed after the ache. I turned to catch the sunlight beaming into the room through the open balcony. It felt odd. Something was strange about the sun and I couldn’t place it.

I recalled what happened. The eclipse pulling me. The red woods. Darnel finding me. The Righgs and... my attention immediately shifted to my arm.

The arm that had been ripped completely off was in one piece. I touched it with my left hand, pressing fingers against the flesh to confirm it was real. Warm. Solid. No scars. No sign it had ever been damaged at all.

The physical confirmation that it had all actually happened made me feel surprisingly numb.

The door opened, and Tow stepped inside. The moment her eyes found mine, her entire posture changed. Relief washed over her features so intensely that she actually stumbled slightly, catching herself against the doorframe.

She looked exhausted. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, and her usually immaculate appearance showed signs of strain.

"You’re finally awake," she breathed.

Finally?

I felt the stiffness in my body again and started to wonder just how long I had been unconscious.

She crossed the room quickly, stopping at the bedside and just... staring at me. As if she needed to confirm I was real, that I was actually conscious and breathing.

"How long have I been asleep?" I asked, my voice coming out rough and dry, barely above a whisper.

The hoarseness startled me.

"It has been a little over four weeks now," Tow said softly. "You’ve been unconscious for over a month."

The information settled over me with a horrifying realisation.

Over a month?!

I stared up at her, stunned.

No wonder my body felt stiff.

"I was gone for that long?" I whispered and then leaned forward as coughs racked my chest.

Tow moved to one of the slabs protruding from the wall and poured water from a pitcher into a cup. She brought it to me. My throat didn’t feel too dry, but it still hurt to swallow, and that cool liquid felt like the best thing I had ever tasted.

She filled it again and again until I had finished all the water in the jug.

"Corin?" I asked weakly. "He was hurt and I am not sure—"

"He is alive," Tow cut in with a faint smile. "He’s nearly finished recovering. He’ll be fine."

I did not know why he had tried to save me, but I was relieved that he wasn’t dead.

"About Darnel..." I started, not knowing how to approach the subject when Tow cut in regardless.

"We can discuss that later. Focus on your rest." Tow’s expression shifted in a slight discomfort. "How do you feel?"

"I feel somewhat stiff... and tired and... groggy." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

She nodded. "Yes, but I don’t mean that..." Her gaze shifted, thoughtful.

I paused.

I didn’t necessarily feel the syzygy in me like a separate force anymore. It felt like a part of me. It was everywhere. In my lungs, in my veins, in my blood...

What did I do exactly back then?

But it felt a whole lot better than what I was familiar with.

"I don’t know how to explain it, but I feel alright..." I answered, not looking at her. "I’m sorry about what happened. Everyone now knows I am not—"

"Do not worry. No one is tying it to you."

I glanced up at her, surprised and somewhat confused.

"Everyone had questions naturally, and while it wasn’t easy laying their concerns to rest, you just happened to be caught in the fray of it all. If anyone asks, just say you do not remember. The light hit you and you found yourself there."

"Isn’t that still suspicious?" I asked.

"No one here is stupid. If anything, it’s the best explanation for the shift in you..."

"Shift?"

"Your energy signature is different. I would say you are a Lycan now, but it feels different from how your syzygy was before."

What?

She immediately shook her head, not offering any further explanation. "You should eat," she said softly, her features easing. "I know you must be starving. I’ll have something brought up immediately."

As if on cue, my stomach cramped painfully, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten in a long time.

"Yes," I agreed weakly. "Please."

Tow left and I sat still, taking in her words and how my body actually felt. There was a strange rhythm to my pulse, as if I had a second heartbeat running parallel to the first. Steadier. Stronger. Not quite in sync but not fighting it either. The dual rhythm felt oddly natural

I focused concentration on my hands and soft white light pulsed faintly beneath the skin I focused on. I immediately stopped and it faded.

I shifted, trying to get off the bed, but I had to stop myself. My body felt so tired, but rejuvenated at the same time in a way I could not explain, but fully understand.

What was inside me now truly felt different than before.

Was I now a Lycan or not...?

I wasn’t sure... but regardless, this power was mine. Completely.

I looked around the room more closely.

Everything felt sharper somehow, and more focused.

Food arrived shortly after. It was in a very small portion which Tow advised was better for now. I ate mechanically, barely tasting anything but just focused on getting sustenance into my body.

I had just finished eating and drinking when the door opened again.

Kael stood in the doorway and I stiffened.

I hadn’t noticed when he came.

We stared at each other. He looked terrible. Exhausted in a way that went beyond physical tiredness. His clothes were neat, but the faint dark circles under his eyes suggested he hadn’t rested any better than Tow had.

"Please, leave us," he said quietly and Tow simply nodded and left, taking the tray with her.

The door closed, and we were alone.

Kael crossed the room slowly, and seated himself on the edge of the bed beside me.
