My Fated Mate Can Have Her-Chapter 138: The Trial
Violet
It was late in the afternoon when I wondered how light was coming in when the hall was deep inside the castle. The sun slanted through the high windows of the formal hall, casting long shadows across the polished floor as the final matter of the day was announced.
My stomach twisted itself into knots.
Throughout the long hours of the morning and early afternoon, I had sat in my designated section, listening to discussions about territorial boundaries, trade agreements, and minor disputes between packs. The Supreme Alphas had worked through their agenda with practiced efficiency, their voices rising and falling in debate over matters that seemed impossibly distant from my own situation.
Some wolves had spoken up from the audience, sharing their views and suggestions. But through it all, I could not help but notice the glaring passes between Kael and Rowan, leading me to come to a sinking conclusion that somehow, they knew... I might be paranoid in thinking that, but I couldn’t be too sure.
And it did not help that Rowan in particular kept staring at me from time to time. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"We will now address the final matter," the eldest among the them, Supreme Alpha Calder, announced with a small level of disinterest that offered me a bit of hope. "Supreme Alphas Kael and Palisa shall at no point, intervene due to their involvement."
I wasn’t sure I liked the sound of that.
His gruff voice carried easily through the hall despite his age. "A complaint brought forward by Supreme Alpha Palisa on behalf of Alpha Damon of Shadowpine pack, concerning a rogue wolf currently residing in Fresna."
The faint murmur of conversation that had filled the hall during the previous discussions died instantly.
Many looks were directed at me, mostly from stunned pack members from Fresna. This, in turn, led to a chain reaction that made every eye in the room turned toward me.
Including that of the Supreme Alphas.
I forced myself to breathe steadily as Gregor touched my elbow, guiding me to stand. My legs felt a bit unsteady as I moved forward to the designated area, the wide space between the seated audience and the raised platform where the Supreme Alphas sat.
On the opposite end of the same open space, Damon stood.
Our eyes met across the distance.
His expression was carefully neutral, but I could see the tension in his jaw, the way his hands hung just slightly too rigid at his sides. Behind him, the head of his patrol wolves stood ready, Garret.
Elena sat in the audience section reserved for Shadowpine’s delegation, her eyes fixed on me with barely concealed hostility.
Gregor stood at my side, offering me a bit on stability as I stood under the scrutinising eyes of everyone in the hall.
It was uncomfortable.
"This matter concerns the wolf known as Violet," Supreme Alpha Calder continued, settling back in his chair as he finally looked up from the paper in front of him to pin me with an odd look. "An Omega..."
Kael looked uncomfortable, darting a look towards Supreme Alpha Calder while the other Supreme Alphas appraised me with strange looks. Rowan looked confused.
The old Supreme Alpha frowned and then shakes his head. "We will get to that later." His eyes lingered on me for a brief moment before shifting to Damon. "Alpha Damon of Shadowpine, you may present your case."
Damon stepped forward slightly, his posture straightening into something formal and practiced. He had clearly prepared for this moment.
"My Lords and Ladies—"
"Get straight to it," Calder grumbled with a dismissive wave of his hand and I fought off the smile that threatened to take over my lips.
Damon flinched at the sharp interruption and I could have sworn I heard Supreme Alpha Palisa chuckle. One of the other Supreme Alphas shot her a stern glare, and from the way Damon looked at her, I could tell her reaction made him uncomfortable.
I started to feel a bit uneasy.
Why exactly did she push to present this matter?
Her eyes met mine and I felt a disgusting chill spread across my skin. It irritated and made me uneasy at the same time, as if I was looking at a venomous snake.
I immediately tore my eyes away, not wanting to stare at her a second longer.
"I come before you seeking justice for a violation of pack law," Damon began, his voice carrying that same confidence I was familiar with. "This rogue wolf"—he gestured in my direction without quite looking at me— "abandoned my pack without permission or proper protocol."
"Making her now a rogue wolf, correct?" Lord Calder questioned.
"Yes." Damon nodded. "As her former Alpha, I have the legal right to demand her return for proper judgement within my pack. However, she fled to a neutral territory bordering Nal and Fresna." He paused and then looked at me, suddenly speaking slowly as if weighing his words carefully. "I am now aware she was granted sanctuary in Supreme Alpha Kael’s domain. And I bring this matter to the council because it now involves multiple territories and requires official adjudication."
He paused, letting his words settle over the room.
If I recall, Gregor had used that word a few times when enlightening me about the case. Complex word to explain having a third person intervening in the matter.
To think Damon was even capable of using such big words.
He continued, "I seek this council’s recognition of my legal claim and request that the rogue be returned to Shadowpine for appropriate consequences."
The way he described it made it sound so reasonable, as if I had simply walked away from my home rather than fled for my life.
"Hmmm," Lord Calder turned his attention to where Kael and Lady Palisa sat at the table. Then he narrowed his eyes as he gazed upon Damon. "Before I comment on Lord kael and Lady Palisa’s unwillingness to handle this matter between one another without bringing it here, I want you to explain the circumstances that led to this wolf’s departure from your pack."
