Chapter 92: The Priestess

Violet

The woman beside Kael was striking in a way that made something uncomfortable twist in my chest. Tall, with pale blue hair that fell in elegant waves past her shoulders. She wore a flowing dress in deep purple that seemed to shimmer with each step. It had a large emblem of the full moon on her back. Her posture was perfect, confident, and the way she leaned slightly toward Kael as she spoke suggested a familiarity that made my skin prickle.

Kael’s expression was tight, focused entirely on whatever she was saying. He didn’t even glance in my direction, even though I was certain he could sense me standing there. Their discussion seemed very important with how much he paid attention to her.

The woman’s hand brushed his arm as she gestured, and that uncomfortable feeling intensified into something sharper.

"Ah... Surprised to see Karla here," Darnel muttered, his gaze following mine.

Turin stared at them too in response to Darnel. "Probably something to do with the sudden announcement about the coming eclipse. They’re likely going to discuss when the hunt should be shifted." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Darnel crossed his arms. "True. That’s possible."

I forced myself to look away from them, turning back to Turin as I tried to focus on their conversation instead of the way Kael was still listening intently to the woman. "Who is she and what are you talking about exactly?"

"Karla?" Turin looked at me before glancing back towards where Kael and the woman were walking. "She’s the daughter of one of the pack Alphas. Came to serve as a priestess at the moon temple here in the capital."

There was a temple here?

Darnel chuckled, the sound somehow both amused and knowing. "We both know what influenced that decision."

Turin shot him a look. "Stop it."

But Darnel only shrugged, still grinning.

Turin’s expression softened slightly as he looked back at Kael and Karla. "They do look good together, though. She would be a fitting Luna for him."

The words hit me like a physical blow, nearly knocking the air from my lungs.

"Anyone can see that," Darnel added. "While a lot of wolves annoy Lord Kael, Karla apparently doesn’t." He suddenly smiled. "Which is very funny that he mentioned how attentive and smart she is considering their history."

My hands twitched at my sides, to the point I could literally feel my nails digging into my palms even though my hands hadn’t moved. I tried to keep my expression neutral, tried to breathe normally, but that sharp feeling in my chest was spreading, making it hard to think clearly.

Darnel’s grin took on a mocking edge as he continued, "Of course, he would have had to mellow towards her eventually. Not even his disdain could get rid of her advances forever."

The word caught in my throat, forcing itself out before I could stop it. "Advances?"

Turin scratched the back of his head, looking uncomfortable now. "Karla used to... pester our Supreme Alpha when they were younger. Even when his father was still alive. Lord Kael didn’t hide how much she irritated him, but she never backed off. It was strange. Eventually, he just got tired of fighting it."

Turin then continued, his tone careful now as if he was discussing something delicate while eyeing the topics of his discussion. "She backed off after a while. Started working at the temple instead. This put some distance between them. But lately..." He paused, seeming to consider his words. "From their interactions, it seems like she’s matured. Gained some sense. And Lord Kael has become more open to her."

Darnel snickered. "She’s just playing the long game."

Turin glared at him. "Show some respect, you imbecile."

Darnel raised his hands in mock surrender, still grinning. "Why are you pressed? She’s not yet Luna. Besides, I am sure we’re both fine with the outcome."

I couldn’t speak, and I wasn’t entirely sure I could move either. My gaze drifted back to where Kael and Karla had been, just in time to see them disappearing into the castle. But not before I caught the look on her face. Soft, fond, her eyes lingering on his face. And the way her hand brushed against his arm again in a gesture that seemed both casual and intimate.

Too intimate.

’No... I do not like this!’

Turin nodded, oblivious to the storm building inside me. "Like I said, she’d make a good Luna." He then snapped at Darnel, "So watch your mouth!"

I wanted to scream. Wanted to demand why they were discussing her as if she were already filling that role. As if I didn’t exist. And why was Kael not doing anything about her touching him? I didn’t care if it was a normal gesture!

But I couldn’t say any of that. And it made me feel so caged. I couldn’t even reveal how much their casual conversation was tearing at something deep inside me.

"Sorry for that," Turin said, turning his attention fully to me now.’’

I flinched, thinking he was apologizing for saying all that only to realise how ridiculous that sounded. The real reason for his apology came out immediately after.

"We went off on a tangent there," he continued. "About the hunt. I am not sure if you’ll be there to witness the hunt, but we got the announcement this morning that an eclipse is coming soon. That’s most likely why Lord Kael had to convene with Karla, who is one of the high-ranking priestesses of the moon order, along with the other pack representatives. They’re going to discuss it, and probably decide if the hunt should be shifted."

"Depending on when the eclipse occurs," Darnel added, his tone now casual. "I bet it’ll be shifted earlier rather than waiting the full three weeks till the actual hunt. The Summit’s in less than two months after that. Better to give everyone more time to rest and prepare after the event."

I forced myself to focus on their words, to push down the hurt and confusion swirling inside me. "How long does the hunt usually take?"
