Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Why Did You Run Away?

The man was none other than Caleb Rhodes!

He wore a fine-quality white shirt and black trousers that encased a pair of impossibly long legs. His demeanor was cold, somber, and noble.

Standing on the busy street corner, he was fatally attractive.

The woman beside him, dressed in a designer white dress, had a curvy figure. Her features were delicate and sweet, and the way her eyes crinkled when she smiled was quite captivating.

After exchanging a few words, the woman hooked her arm into Caleb Rhodes’s and pulled him forward.

Seeing them walk away, Nina Wynn let out a sigh of relief and lowered the book from her face.

But at that very moment, Caleb Rhodes suddenly turned his head and looked back in her direction from afar.

Despite the distance, she felt the chill in his eyes creep over her, subtle yet invasive. Her scalp tingled, and her heart pounded like a drum.

Fortunately, Caleb Rhodes quickly looked away.

Nina Wynn immediately stood up. "I’m sorry, Mr. Jacobs, but I have to go."

Before Mr. Jacobs could reply, she had already hurried off, her frantic haste making it seem as if she’d seen something repulsive.

However, before she even reached the door, the figures of Caleb Rhodes and the woman appeared in her line of sight.

With no time to hide, Nina Wynn froze on the spot. Steeling herself, she called out, "Uncle!"

Caleb Rhodes’s gaze swept over her white, knee-length dress before settling on her slightly sickly face. "Here drinking coffee with a classmate?" he asked coolly.

"Caleb, who’s this? Why is she calling you ’Uncle’?"

The woman’s eyes showed surprise, and her voice was soft and delicate.

Caleb Rhodes’s expression was impassive, his voice devoid of any emotion. "My sister-in-law’s niece."

The woman looked Nina Wynn up and down in surprise. "So you’re the little niece? You’ve gotten so big."

She extended her hand to shake Nina Wynn’s. "Hello, I’m Rosalind Lowell. I’m a friend of Caleb’s."

In truth, Nina Wynn knew who she was even without Rosalind Lowell’s introduction.

She had secretly observed Rosalind Lowell many times at the Rhodes Family’s home.

A high and mighty young lady from a prestigious family, doted on by everyone. Even the ever-cold and taciturn Caleb Rhodes saved all his favoritism for her.

’Rosalind Lowell is a princess who lives forever in the sun, while I’m just a humble weed in a dark corner.’

Before Nina Wynn could speak, Mr. Jacobs caught up to her. "Hey, you forgot your phone."

Nina Wynn quickly took the phone. "Thank you!"

Mr. Jacobs scratched his hair, the tips of his ears turning red. "Miss Wynn, could I add you on WeChat?"

Eager to leave, Nina Wynn quickly added Mr. Jacobs as a friend.

However, neither of them noticed Caleb Rhodes’s increasingly icy gaze.

"Nina Wynn, is this your classmate?"

Before Nina Wynn could answer, Mr. Jacobs smiled and said, "No, we’re on a blind date. This is our first time meeting."

"A blind date?"

Caleb Rhodes narrowed his eyes, the darkness in them deepening.

Nina Wynn’s heart leaped in alarm, and she lowered her head.

Her soft, pale fingers twisted together as she said in a small voice, "No, he’s just a regular classmate. Uncle, Miss Lowell, we should get going. We won’t disturb your date."

With that, she grabbed Mr. Jacobs and fled out the door.

Outside, Mr. Jacobs laughed. "So that really is your uncle? He looks so young and handsome, even better looking than a movie star."

Nina Wynn looked at the face before her, which bore a slight resemblance to someone deep in her memory, and her heart felt heavy.

But she quickly said, "Mr. Jacobs, it’s best you stay away from me. You should probably delete me on WeChat. Keeping my contact information won’t do you any good."

Mr. Jacobs stared at her in astonishment. Just as he was about to ask why, Nina Wynn had already turned and walked away.

Summer rain comes without warning. Not long after Nina Wynn left, a sudden downpour began, and the once-bright sky turned terrifyingly dark.

She didn’t have time to take cover and was soaked through. With nowhere nearby to shelter from the rain, she could only stand under a tree by the roadside and wait for it to let up.

After a moment, a black Maybach sped over, and the water it kicked up nearly splashed onto Nina Wynn.

The car door opened, and a cold, deep voice pierced through the curtain of rain. "Get in the car!"

Through the rain, Nina Wynn could see the person inside the car.

His lean wrist rested on the car window as he looked down at her with a detached gaze.

Despite the rain, the oppressive aura of a man long accustomed to being in power still washed over her.

A feeling of being looked down upon sprouted in Nina Wynn’s heart.

After a second’s hesitation, Nina Wynn took a few steps back, then suddenly turned and ran.

Caleb Rhodes watched her shrinking figure in the rain and narrowed his eyes.

The pressure in the air dropped even lower than before. Willson Lawson couldn’t help but shiver. "Third Lord Master, should we bring Miss Wynn back?"

Caleb Rhodes’s thin lips pressed into a straight line. He watched until Nina Wynn jumped onto a bus not far away before uttering a few words: "Go to her place."

On the bus, Nina Wynn kept looking back until she could no longer see the taillights of Caleb Rhodes’s car. Only then did she finally sigh in relief.

For some reason, she felt that Caleb Rhodes was becoming more and more sinister and terrifying.

The rain was still heavy when she got off the bus. Without an umbrella, Nina Wynn staggered into her apartment building’s stairwell.

Her fever hadn’t fully broken yet, and after being caught in the rain, it was now raging.

The light in the dark stairwell had been broken for a long time and never fixed. Faint light from outside seeped in, casting dappled spots on the ground and making the old space look even more dilapidated.

Nina Wynn was soaked through. Combined with having eaten almost nothing all day and the earlier stress, her body felt incredibly weak now that she could relax.

She supported herself on the rust-streaked handrail and slowly climbed the stairs.

When she reached her door, she realized she had left her bag at the coffee shop, too. All she had was her phone clutched in her hand.

She gave a bitter smile and slid down the wall to sit on the floor.

’How can my luck be this bad? It seems like nothing good ever happens whenever I run into Caleb Rhodes.’

’I lost my keys, and now my phone is dead too!’

’Now I can only wait for the rain to stop and then figure something out.’

After what felt like an eternity, she heard the sound of slow footsteps coming from the stairwell entrance.

She wanted to look up to see who it was, but her head was too heavy. Forcing it up, she could only make out a tall, slender figure.

The crisp scent of cedar invaded Nina Wynn’s senses like an intruder. With every breath, she felt enveloped by it.

The scent seemed to jolt her foggy mind, and she instantly became clear-headed.

She scrambled to her feet and stammered, "Un-Uncle..."

It was Caleb Rhodes!

Caleb Rhodes stared at her without moving.

Her damp hair clung to her delicate cheeks, making her fair skin and refined features stand out even more.

And because of her fever, her lips were a particularly vibrant, glistening red. It was as if they were tempting him to kiss her!

A dark glint appeared in his eyes as he slowly closed in on her. "Why did you run when you saw me?"
