Chapter 487: S3 Austrian Grand Prix. 4

[You have unlocked a new Skill:

—Silent Restore: 5]

[This skill grants the host the extraordinary ability to instantly regenerate a single damaged car component such as a punctured tire, scraped sidepod, or fractured wing element, within nanoseconds of failure.]

[The effect occurs silently and without visible transition, restoring the affected part to its peak condition as if no damage had ever taken place. It leaves no debris, no evidence, and no disruption to performance or telemetry.]

[This skill only restores one component per activation window. Critical damage involving multiple systems remains unaffected. As the skill level increases, its scope and reactivity will expand accordingly.]

Luca didn’t really understand the newly acquired skill, Silent Restore, so he asked the System to explain further. Courteously, the System explained word by word how Silent Restore operated.

It was like a damage-regenerating skill for the car if any of its components got crippled. For example, if the car’s tire was punctured or the wing was impaired, the skill would promptly regenerate that component in a flash of pure phenomenon, restoring it instantly as though the damage never occurred in the first place! There would be no visible evidence of the damage, or even the repair!

As long as Luca had the command subconsciously triggered all through the race at the back of his head, then the conditions for its activation would be met just as stated.

But the System clarified one limitation: it could only restore one component at a time per race phase. That meant if Luca experienced a full-blown crash, or suffered multiple failures at once, the skill wouldn’t be of much use. But if it was just one issue, and minor enough to affect performance, the car would automatically "heal" itself.

’It’s still fantastic. This skill would help me not fall victim to incidents like what happened in Belgium last year. And it also helps to quickly repair a minor damage that could potentially spread to a significant predicament.’

The higher the level of Silent Restore, the more profound its usage could become, and could possibly restore more than one component per race, or even rebuild after heavier contact.

Luca knew very well that this skill would give him the ultimate confidence to engage more frequently in physical battles with rivals, especially in the tightest of corners and most heated wheel-to-wheel duels. He no longer had to second-guess the risk of light contact or a clipped tire!

Silent Restore would make him become even more ferocious than what many already claimed he was! Luca would begin diving into overtakes like a madman, without putting in much thought for potential compromise to car integrity. A scrape, a puncture, or even a missing endplate wouldn’t mean disaster anymore!

Apart from becoming more daring and assertive, the acquisition of Silent Restore also meant Luca didn’t only have Yaw Flex and DRS Boost left as the two uncompleted skills remaining in both his Self and Car category.

Sync Buff was becoming more and more hellacious to achieve without Tools, and if he had completed Gripper without gaining a new skill in return, then the number of skills available to earn in-race Sync Buff points would have dropped to just two.

With Sync Buff looking greatly dubious, Luca knew he had to finish the race on his own standards.

The pitstop muddle and every other chaos that accompanied this Austrian Grand Prix was able to shuffle the entire field, even throwing the fastest driver, Antonio Luigi, beyond P10. But the race slowly recovered itself, lap after lap, with moments of calmness and sudden spikes of action.

Luca made sure he wasn’t left behind, as he fought tooth and nail to drag himself back to P5. From what he had observed thoroughly, Luca now understood that Marko Ignatova and Jimmy Damgaard were his only true sub-problems apart from the heavyweights—Luigi and Ailbeart.

Even though he was (faster) than the two, they were both very cunning, resilient, and tactically sharp. These were men who had more than the average racecraft; they had situational awareness, tire wisdom, and the instincts of crackerjack predators. So they could challenge him properly and even emerge victorious if fate decided to favour them with the right track structure and race atmosphere.

But as the great second race of the season began inching toward its end, Luca had the upper hand over both of them. He was in P3, while Marko and Damgaard were holding P4 and P5 respectively. And just perfectly for Luca, Damgaard was keeping Marko busy—constantly probing, switching lines, trying different entries and exits, and forcing the Russian to defend almost every corner, lap after lap. That meant Marko couldn’t focus on launching an attack up ahead.

That allowed Luca to breathe, to stretch the gap, and to finally stop watching his mirrors. Up front, Ailbeart Moireach was still pestering Luigi, attempting everything short of a lunge to rob him of the lead. With those two locked in a thunderous duel, and Marko distracted from behind, Luca was in a prime position for unhindered advancement, comfortably nestled between chaos and unreachable glory.

Since he had POWER & PERFORMANCE at 265%, Luca wondered if he should even be fretting about the supercars ahead of him. He also had AERODYNAMICS & CHASSIS sitting at 220%, and at this rate, it wouldn’t be long before one of them crossed the 300% threshold, at which point the System would deem him a full-fledged super driver!

He hadn’t reached it yet, he hadn’t joined their tier. But he was close. And in Formula 1, being close was actually all you needed. Because sometimes, a 92B could overtake a 97, and everyone would fully understand. Being close didn’t mean behind, it meant you could truly challenge. It meant you had a chance!

All of a sudden, Luca was filled with valor as the race reached its final laps. A 4-second delta from Ailbeart Moireach would take more than just a few concluding laps to close, but Luca didn’t let that dwindle his hope.

His eyes sparked with immersed fascination when he saw his dashboard leaderboard change!

"WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

P1— Ailbeart Moireach ↑

P2— Antonio Luigi ↓

The entirety of Austria went crazy over the last minute overtake!

"...NO WAY!! NO WAY!! HE’S DONE IT!! AILBEART MOIREACH HAS DONE IT!! ON THE VERY LAST LAP...!"

"WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

The cameras couldn’t keep up. The grandstands couldn’t sit still. Flares burst, flags waved, and the roars became thunder. Antonio Luigi, untouchable all race, had been dethroned at the dying seconds!

"No!"

"...THROUGH TURN 9! HE WENT FOR IT INTO 10!

"WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

Luigi corrected his line with panic and distress. That was the very line Ailbeart took niggardly, risking even the same kind of collision that had earlier befell Albert Derstappen in this same race.

But as Ailbeart emerged victorious, his heart rate spiked faster than even the average for an F1 driver. His eyes were wide and he could hardly breathe!

The checkered flag unfurled for him!

Ailbeart Moireach was ahead. But Luigi’s raw fury behind the wheel, as he powered out of Turn 10, made the difference shrink with every tick of the throttle. The Italian began to scream inside his padded helmet, his eyes wide like a maniac, unable to let his P1 win slip away just like that!

"...LUIGI’S CLOSING IN...!"

"WOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

"...MOIREACH TO THE LINE—!"

"WOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

"...LUIGI RIGHT BEHIND HIM—!"

"WOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

"..AND IT’S AILBEART MOIREACH WHO TAKES THE WIN IN AUSTRIA!!!"

"WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!"

"...2ND PLACE, ANTONIO LUIGI!"
