Chapter 42: Emergency Quest

The morning sun crept through the curtains, painting pale gold streaks across the living room floor. Andrey was already awake, dressed in loose training pants and a thin long-sleeved shirt. He stood by the window, a cup of coffee in hand, watching the city slowly come to life.

Behind him, the apartment stirred. Soft footsteps padded down the hallway. Lisa emerged first, already dressed in a mint-green tracksuit that matched her magical girl theme. Her twintails were tied neatly with white ribbons. She yawned, rubbing her eyes.

"Morning, Andrey," she mumbled.

"Morning. Sleep well?"

Lisa nodded, then hesitated. "Sarah was still asleep when I left the room. Should we wake her?"

Andrey shook his head. "Let her rest a little longer. We’re not in a rush."

The bathroom door opened, and Sein stepped out, her orange hair still damp from a shower. She wore a plain black tank top and grey sweatpants—borrowed from Andrey’s limited athletic wardrobe. The clothes hung loosely on her frame, but she moved with a restless energy, like a caged animal.

"You’re up early," Andrey observed.

Sein grunted. "Couldn’t sleep. Too much energy."

Lisa tilted her head. "Is that a side effect of the contract?"

"Maybe." Sein flexed her fingers, watching a faint crimson glow flicker across her knuckles. "Or maybe I’m just not used to being... stable. For weeks, every time I closed my eyes, I felt that dark mana eating at me. Now it’s gone. Quiet." She looked at her hands. "It’s strange."

Andrey set down his coffee cup. "Good strange or bad strange?"

Sein considered the question. "Too early to tell."

Sarah’s door creaked open. She emerged, hair messy, still in her pajamas—an oversized t-shirt and shorts. She blinked at the group, then shuffled toward the kitchen.

"Coffee," she croaked.

Lisa giggled. "Good morning to you too, Sarah."

Sarah grunted in response, fumbling with the coffee machine. Andrey walked over and gently took the canister from her hands, measuring the grounds himself. Sarah watched him with bleary eyes, then leaned against the counter.

"...Thanks."

"You’re welcome."

Sein observed the exchange with a raised eyebrow. "You two live together?"

Andrey didn’t look up from the coffee machine. "We’re teammates. Sarah and Lisa have been staying here temporarily. It’s safer than separate apartments." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Sein’s gaze shifted to Lisa and Sarah, then back to Andrey. "Temporarily. Right."

Lisa’s cheeks flushed, but she didn’t comment.

The coffee finished brewing. Andrey poured a cup for Sarah, then one for himself. Sein declined, preferring water. Lisa made herself tea.

They gathered around the small dining table, the morning light warming the space.

Andrey pulled out a tablet, swiping through the hero app. "I’ve identified a few low-risk gates for training. All C-rank, confirmed stable. We can start with one of them—focus on team coordination rather than clearing speed."

Sarah wrapped her hands around her coffee cup. "What’s the plan? Standard formation?"

Andrey nodded. "Sein will take point on offense. Sarah, you’ll handle ranged AoE and crowd control. Lisa, barriers and support. I’ll float—tank when needed, cover gaps, and coordinate."

Sein set down her water glass. "You’re putting me on point? Just like that?"

"You’re the most experienced fighter here," Andrey said simply. "Even with your power adjusted, your instincts are sharper than ours. It makes sense."

Sein stared at him for a long moment. Then she looked away, a complicated expression crossing her face.

"...Fine. But if you can’t keep up, don’t expect me to slow down."

Sarah snorted. "Trust me, we can keep up."

Lisa smiled nervously. "I’ll do my best to protect everyone."

Andrey stood, pushing back his chair. "Finish your breakfast. We leave in thirty minutes."

--------×--------

The gate was in an abandoned industrial zone on the edge of the city—a sprawling complex of rusted warehouses and overgrown lots. The Association had marked it as stable, C-rank, with minimal monster density. Perfect for training.

Andrey’s team stood at the perimeter, staring at the shimmering purple vortex that hovered between two crumbling buildings. The air around it was thick with ambient mana, making the hair on their arms stand up.

Sein cracked her neck, rolling her shoulders. "Smells like goblins. Maybe a few imps. Nothing dangerous."

Sarah transformed in a flash of pink light, her frilly dress materializing around her. "You can smell them?"

"Experience." Sein raised her hand, and crimson flames licked at her fingers. Her transformation was different from Sarah’s and Lisa’s—less frilly, more aggressive. The crimson dress hugged her body, with flame-shaped accents along the hem and a high slit that exposed her thighs. Her gauntlets gleamed, pulsing with heat.

Lisa transformed as well, mint-green light swirling around her. "Ready when you are, Andrey."

Andrey stepped forward, Ki energy flowing into his palms.

"Formation. Sein, breach. Sarah, watch our flanks. Lisa, barrier on entry. Move."

Sein didn’t wait. She launched herself at the gate, her gauntlets blazing, and vanished into the purple vortex.

Sarah followed a heartbeat later, pink hearts trailing behind her.

They stepped through.

The interior of the gate was a twisted version of the industrial zone—same buildings, but warped and decayed, with a sickly purple sky overhead. The ground was cracked, and strange flora pulsed with faint light.

A pack of goblins was already charging toward them, drawn by the intruders.

Sein met them head-on.

Her fist slammed into the first goblin’s chest, and crimson energy exploded outward, sending the creature flying into its companions. She didn’t stop—punches, kicks, elbows, each strike accompanied by a burst of flame. The goblins fell in seconds.

Sarah raised her wand. "Heartstorm Volley!" Pink hearts streaked past Sein, catching the stragglers and turning them into mana dust.

Lisa threw up a barrier around the group, deflecting a stray arrow from an imp on a nearby rooftop. "Clear!"

Andrey scanned the area, Ki-enhanced senses picking up more movement deeper in. "More coming from the east. Sein, push forward. Sarah, cover the rear. Lisa, stay close to me."

They moved as a unit—Sein carving a path through the monsters, Sarah’s blasts clearing anything that tried to flank them, Lisa’s barriers absorbing the occasional counterattack. Andrey stayed in the middle, directing, adjusting, and stepping in when needed.

A larger creature—a hobgoblin, twice the size of the others—charged at Sein from the side. She didn’t see it in time.

Andrey did.

He intercepted, his palms slamming into the hobgoblin’s chest. Ki energy exploded outward, staggering the beast. It recovered quickly, swinging a massive club at his head.

Andrey ducked, rolled, and came up behind it. He channeled Ki into his leg and kicked the back of its knee. The hobgoblin stumbled, and Sein finished it with a flaming punch to the skull.

She glanced at Andrey, breathing hard. "Not bad, Glasses."

"Focus," he said, already moving to the next target.

They cleared the gate in twenty-three minutes—a new record for the team. When the last monster dissolved and the core shattered, the gate collapsed behind them, spitting them back into the real world.

Andrey stood in the sunlight, his clothes singed, his knuckles bruised, but his heart light.

Sarah de-transformed first, collapsing onto a nearby crate. "I need a nap."

Lisa sat down beside her, her transformation fading. "That was intense... but good."

Sein stood apart, staring at her gauntlets. The crimson glow was steady, strong. She flexed her fingers, then clenched her fist.

"...Not bad," she said quietly. "For a first run."

Andrey walked over to her. "How do you feel?"

Sein looked up at him. For a moment, the prickly exterior softened.

"Like myself again. Mostly."

Andrey nodded. "That’s a start."

Behind them, Sarah groaned. "Can we go home now? I’m hungry."

Lisa laughed. "You’re always hungry."

Sein watched them and something in her chest loosened.

She turned away before anyone could see her expression.

"Let’s go," she said. "I need a shower."

The team had just started walking toward the van, still buzzing with the afterglow of their successful gate clear. Sarah was already pulling out her phone, probably checking for nearby food options. Lisa was stretching her arms, her twintails bouncing with each step. Sein walked slightly apart, her crimson gauntlets still faintly glowing as she flexed her fingers.

Andrey was about to open the van door when the system’s voice rang in his head—sharp, urgent, completely unlike its usual playful tone.

System: Emergency quest detected! Host, a contaminated ancient artifact is nearby. The dark mana signature is strong—stronger than expected for this area. Estimated threat level: C+ to B-. Immediate action recommended.

Andrey’s hand froze on the door handle.

Sarah noticed first. "Andrey? What’s wrong?"

He turned slowly, his eyes scanning the abandoned industrial zone around them. The gate had collapsed, but the air still felt charged—heavy, somehow. He hadn’t noticed it before, but now that the system pointed it out, he could feel it. A faint pressure at the edges of his Ki perception.

"There’s something here," he said quietly. "Something the system just flagged."

Lisa’s expression shifted from relaxed to alert. "What kind of something?"

Andrey met her eyes. "A contaminated artifact. One of the twelve the system mentioned before. It’s nearby."

Sein, who had been listening with narrowed eyes, stepped closer. "Contaminated artifact? What are you talking about?"

Andrey quickly summarized—the ancient relics corrupted by dark mana, the need to collect and purify them to prevent catastrophic portal surges, the connection to the primordial demon Laplace.

Sein’s face darkened as he spoke. "You’re saying there’s one of these things here? Now?"

"According to the system, yes."

Sein cracked her knuckles. "Then let’s go find it. We just cleared a gate—we’re warmed up."

Andrey shook his head. "It’s not that simple. The system estimates the threat level around the artifact is C+ to B-. That’s higher than anything we’ve faced together."

Sein’s eyes glinted. "So? I used to handle B-rank threats for breakfast."

"Used to," Andrey emphasized. "Your power isn’t what it was. And we don’t know what’s guarding this thing. We need to be careful."

Lisa raised her hand tentatively. "Maybe we could just... locate it first? Scout without engaging? Then come back with a plan?"

Andrey considered this. "That’s... actually reasonable. We find it, assess the situation, and decide whether to engage or retreat."
