My Servant System-Chapter 1574 - 1573: Tallying The Loss
That fire in my veins began to dwindle as the last of the monsters fell lifelessly to the ground, adding to the mountain of bodies that we were now going to have to spend the next few days, maybe even weeks dealing with.
Sorting through all of the meat, hides, bones and various other valuable or usable pieces of these monsters was going to be an enormous task, yet it was also a very lucrative and needed thing to do, especially as my eyes swept over the people that had fallen during this battle as well. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
It was never going to be easy to remember that such a large number of enemies would almost certainly always bring about casualties on our side since I was so accustomed to fighting with a select handful of people who were more than capable of surviving quite a lot.
There were even some Demons amongst the dead, something that surprised me momentarily before I took a breath and steadied myself, knowing that now the actual hard part was coming up; if I had known how draining the actions I would need to take after a battle were going to be, I might have just accepted a small plot near the Labyrinthian instead...
Shaking those thoughts from my mind, I carefully began to clean off my blade while gathering my breath, already running some of the numbers in my head as I just looked around silently; a minute later Leone came down to join me, her usually radiant and gentle visage twisted with mild grief.
"We lost more than I thought we would..."
I just hummed in agreement, already seeing over a dozen bodies just nearby, though my hopes were that this would be the area with the most amount of loss; with my presence most of the horde had swung around to hit this particular patch of the wall over and over again, so hopefully the other parts were doing alright.
A few of the Demons were silently gathering up their fallen comrades, pulling them into the city and taking immense care of them now, while the rest of the mortals all milled about mindlessly for a few minutes, unable to really grasp what happened as exhaustion took them.
"That was fun~!"
Hearing Satanya nearby, I sighed and glanced over at the red skinned Demoness before turning back towards the now silent battlefield, wondering if I was going to have to add one more body to the pile tonight...
"Tis a shame that we lost as many as we did... Demons in particular are going to be hard to replace. Guess that means we need to shift our focus from commercial expansion over to fortification instead. Some of these people aren't fit for close quarters battles, but they could very easily man a ballista up on the walls."
Thankfully the woman was capable of knowing when and where her attitude would actually be acceptable, and for this moment she was speaking rather 'normally' for what was happening, though her gaze definitely lingered far too long on certain parts of me.
"We'll need to start adding enchantments onto the walls as well to bolster their defensive capabilities. As crude as it will look, we should make use of the good bones to shore up the walls some more, maybe add in some barricades or such at the base of the walls to keep monsters from getting too close."
Satanya immediately shook her head and said "Those bones would be best used for weaponry or potions. Get a fully stocked armory at every key point on the walls, where a simple guard could get outfitted with a thick shield, long spear and some decent armor.", further proving to me that she could - in fact - be rather reasonable when she believed it necessary.
Soon enough a few of the older Cimeriesa's approached and began to discuss my earlier idea of wide spread enchantments across the walls, and for a few minutes we were just standing outside of the walls, taking in the vast amount of corpses piled up around us and finding some solace in just how many there were compared to our own.
When a Beliali approached with a small notebook, we were interrupted about the future and brought back to the present as he offered it to me, telling me that the total number of dead amounted to twenty four confirmed and three more currently missing.
Their names and where they had died was jotted down in neat script, and I took a moment to memorize all of them before telling the Demon to keep me informed on the remaining three, which were hopefully just unconscious somewhere and not dead.
Seven Demons were amongst that number, and for a population as small as ours that was quite significant... though there was nothing we could do now besides ensure that we were thoroughly prepared for the next attack, no matter how large or sudden it was.
The other seventeen confirmed dead were a mixture of all kinds of races, and immediately I had another problem that needed solving; how are we going to go about dealing with our own corpses in the future?
Whether they died in duty or of natural causes, what was the plan for them, and would there be a need for specialized processes or would I just tell everyone that our city would only bury or cremate our dead, nothing more?
Cremation would save space but many see it as desecration whilst burial calls for grave tenders and that aforementioned space... it was definitely a problem I hadn't given any thought yet whatsoever, and now I had to deal with that as well as another problem.
The family of the deceased should be given something because of their loss, but the question was what that should be; some coin - but how much? - as well as basic arrangements for whatever they desire for the body, but is there more that they should get?
What can we reasonably give to someone who just lost someone close to them, to at least help smoothen things out however much we possibly could..?
