Chapter 38: Trying Berserker’s Cry Side Effect

The fight between Gary and Jason grew more intense. With a fluid motion, Gary swung his sword in a side-slash toward Jason, who parried by flipping one of his daggers and catching the blade. Meanwhile, Jason’s other hand thrust toward Gary’s face, but Gary caught his wrist in an instant just as the tip of the blade nearly pierced his eye. Both of them were grinning wide.

"Hmm... you’re strong, man," Gary said.

"Same here, man. You too," Jason replied.

"Hey."

The two of them immediately turned to see Dennis walking toward them; naturally, they both came to a halt.

"What’s up?" Gary asked.

"I want to try something. You two keep fighting after I use my skill, okay?" Dennis said.

"Hmm... okay, give it a shot, dude," Jason replied.

"Alright, hold on," Dennis said.

"Groaaar... Berserk Cry!"

Dennis’s stamina immediately dropped by 1,000 points, but the bodies of Dennis, Gary, and Jason were instantly enveloped in an aura of red and blue energy that swirled upward like a tornado before coating them like fire. Without Dennis realizing it, Daisy, Olivia, and Kimberly—who were also nearby—were hit by the effects of his shout as well. Dennis’s face went pale as he saw Gary and Jason’s bodies bulk up while their eyes turned completely white. "Clang!" Without warning, Gary and Jason, appearing to have lost themselves, immediately lunged at Dennis with sword and knife. Luckily, Dennis was quick enough to parry both attacks with his iron gauntlets.

"Hey... snap out of it!" Dennis shouted, startled.

Suddenly, Gary and Jason pulled their weapons back. Both shook their heads and clutched them as if they had just woken up; their eyes returned to normal, though the energy from Dennis’s shout still radiated around them.

"Wow... I feel way stronger than before... but I blacked out for a second... what happened? This isn’t the same shout you used yesterday, right?" Gary asked Dennis.

"Yeah, I totally lost it, like I fainted just now... but man, I am surging with energy and adrenaline," Jason added, looking at his daggers.

"My shout is a bit different... it adds more power than the one yesterday, but you lose yourselves for a moment because you enter a berserk state. That’s the side effect," Dennis said, looking at his fists.

"Hmm... that’s a bit dangerous. Don’t use it unless we’re desperate. Can’t you just use the regular shout?" Gary asked.

"I don’t know... I haven’t tried," Dennis replied.

"Hey... hey... look over there," Jason said.

The three of them turned to see Daisy parrying attacks from Olivia and Kimberly at the same time. It seemed the two of them had lost themselves and were fighting ferociously, creating a suffocating aura of energy. Dennis, Gary, and Jason immediately dashed toward the three women and caught them all at once.

When Dennis looked at Daisy, it turned out she was conscious and unaffected by the berserk state, even though she had received the same energy as the others. Dennis was grateful that Daisy Number Six hadn’t fought back and only parried, knowing the other two had lost control.

"Hey, baby. Next time, don’t just dive in like that. Explain first. I feel bad for the others. I’m fine, but they aren’t," Number Six whispered.

"Yeah, I know. Sorry, babe," Dennis whispered back.

Then, Dennis and Daisy helped Olivia and Kimberly, who were being held by Gary and Jason but were still struggling to break free. Dennis shouted, "Wake up!" right in front of them, and both immediately went still. Their eyes returned to normal, and they looked utterly confused. They turned to see Gary and Jason holding them tight.

"Huh... what just happened? What is this energy?" Olivia asked, looking at her body, which was shrouded in a red and blue energy aura that looked like fire.

"I heard Dennis shout, and then everything went black... until now," Kimberly added, dazed.

Dennis quickly explained everything to them. Naturally, they understood what had happened and didn’t blame him, since he was just trying to figure out the effects and was testing it for the first time.

"Hmm... it’s too dangerous. Let’s just stick to the regular shout," Olivia said.

"Yeah, she’s right. In a real war, it’s too risky. We could end up killing our own allies," Kimberly added.

"Alright. You guys keep practicing; I’m going to step aside for a bit," Dennis replied.

The group resumed their training, swapping partners, while Dennis and Daisy retreated to the edge of the beach arena. Dennis immediately opened his status interface to check his skills. His War Cry had been completely upgraded to Berserk Cry, and there was no way to change it back. He opened his talent manager, but there were no useful skills he could use to restore the original War Cry.

"Man... this is a problem. Without War Cry, it’ll be hard for them to fight enemies at a higher level than them. How am I going to fix this?" Dennis asked himself. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"What’s wrong, baby?" Number Six asked.

"It’s nothing. I’ll just tell you about it," Dennis answered.

Dennis explained his concerns to Daisy Number Six, and she listened intently while watching their friends spar. Once Dennis had let out everything weighing on his heart, Daisy Number Six turned to look at him with a casual shrug.

"Well, how did you just snap them out of it? Once you shout, just do what you just did. The buff stays the same whether they’re in a berserk state or not," Daisy Number Six said nonchalantly.

Hearing her words—so casual yet so right—Dennis gave it some serious thought. Since the skill was already upgraded and there was no going back, he had to find a way to make it work. In other words, he could use it and then immediately bring them back to their senses with a follow-up shout. Another thought occurred to him: he realized that when he used Blood Lust, he also entered a berserk state, so he intended to train himself to stay conscious while using it. He turned to Daisy Number Six.

"You’re right, babe. I get it now. Will you help me?" Dennis asked.

"Hmm... help with what?" Daisy Number Six asked.

"Even if I use Blood Lust and go berserk like I did last night, you’re still stronger than me. I want to try controlling my Blood Lust, but I need you to help snap me out of it if I lose control and start hurting everyone," Dennis answered.

Daisy Number Six went silent, studying Dennis’s face intensely. Then, she took his face in both of her hands and shook her head.

"I won’t. The reason is, I can’t stop you... unless I kill you. The reason Number One took over yesterday and got hurt was because I was actually about to kill you, and she took the hit for it. I don’t dare take that risk again. I already told you last night that I regret everything," Daisy Number Six said, her voice trembling, and she looked truly terrified.

"Is that so? Is that what really happened last night?" Dennis asked, shocked by Number Six’s explanation.

Number Six nodded and didn’t say another word. Her face looked genuinely anxious, and her eyes seemed to be saying, "Please don’t try what happened last night ever again." Dennis went back to his thoughts; he couldn’t possibly force Number Six to do something she didn’t want to do. Finally, he held both of her hands against his cheeks and kissed her forehead.

"I understand. I won’t use it again," Dennis said with a smile.

"Thank you, baby. I don’t want to be forced to kill you because I love you," Daisy Number Six replied, smiling back.

Dennis wrapped his arm around Daisy Number Six and went back to watching their friends spar, but his mind was racing, trying to figure out how to work around using his shout. He kept a close eye on the duration of the energy still swirling around them. About 10 minutes later, the energy finally burned out and vanished.

"Thud." Gary, Jason, Olivia, and Kimberly immediately stopped fighting and collapsed onto the sand, completely drained. Dennis and Daisy, sitting on the sidelines, felt the same sudden exhaustion hit them since the shout’s energy lasted exactly 15 minutes. In other words, his shout could only be used in a total emergency or a do-or-die situation; once the buff wore off, everyone affected became as weak as an engine that had run completely out of fuel.

Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly eventually stood up and trudged over to Dennis, sitting down in front of him and Daisy.

"Okay, don’t ever use that shout again. It left me feeling like a wet noodle. Only use it if we’re backed into a corner," Gary said.

"Seriously, dude. Don’t make that a regular thing. My energy is totally tapped out," Jason added.

"Even without your shout, we’re actually strong enough. It just gives us that extra boost and adrenaline. Just save it for emergencies, okay?" Olivia said.

"Agreed. We shouldn’t rely on that shout too much. We need to depend on our own strength as well," Kimberly added.

"Alright, I hear you. I’ll only use it if we’re in a dire situation or getting squeezed," Dennis said.

"Perfect. Thanks, man," Gary replied.

After that, they began discussing their training session together. As the referees, Dennis and Daisy shared their feedback. The six of them looked relaxed as they set aside their weapons, until they were finally called by the staff because lunch was ready.
