Chapter 72: My Wife’s Dark and Traumatic Past

That night, in the apartment, after returning from the mall and putting their groceries in the fridge, showering together, cooking and eating dinner together, and finally notifying all of Daisy’s friends—including their team and the school’s senior team—of her new number, the two sat side by side on the sofa and said nothing. Only their hands were linked, holding onto each other, while both of their smartphones sat on the coffee table with the screens facing down.

Daisy shifted to press closer to Dennis and tilted her head onto his shoulder, which he lowered slightly so she could rest comfortably. They fell silent again. Dennis already knew what had happened to Daisy in the previous world from Sami, but he had absolutely no idea what had happened to her in this new world, since he had only met Daisy when they started high school. Suddenly, Daisy turned to look at Dennis, who immediately turned to look back at her.

"Honey, can I tell you about that man and my past? I don’t want to keep secrets from you, and I don’t want to bottle it up alone anymore," Daisy said, suddenly breaking the silence.

"Go ahead and tell me, I’m listening," Dennis replied.

"But the way I tell it is different."

Suddenly, Daisy transformed into Daisy Number Seven, manifesting her wings, then moved onto Dennis’s lap so their heads were level. After that, she cupped Dennis’s cheeks with both hands and pressed her forehead against his. They both closed their eyes, and a vision began to play in Dennis’s mind—a perspective from Daisy’s viewpoint since she was a little girl, showing when her seven personalities first emerged.

In this world, Daisy was left behind by her father, who worked as a hunter and died in the line of duty when she was only 7 years old. She, her older sister—who was three years older than Daisy—and her mother were left devastated and broken. At the time, her mother was still in university and had to work to provide for herself, her sister, and a young Daisy.

Two years after they were left by her father and after her mother graduated, they moved to Ruby City. Daisy was 9 years old then and her sister was 12. Because her mother was traumatized, she wouldn’t allow Daisy or her sister to become hunters and follow in their father’s footsteps. Daisy actually wanted to follow his path; even though he was gone, she was still proud of her father for fighting for humanity.

But because she was still small, she ultimately couldn’t fight her mother and gave in. She also listened to her older sister, who told her that she shouldn’t follow their father’s footsteps and that it would be better to become a scientist in Diamond City, which was her sister’s dream. Of course, their lives began to improve in Ruby City because her mother’s job was enough to support them.

It was there that her mother met their adoptive father, who was initially kind and loved Daisy and her sister like his own children before the marriage. But a year later, once her mother had remarried this adoptive father—who turned out to be unemployed and stayed home every day—Daisy’s sister, who was then 13, began acting strangely.

Daisy often saw her sister going into the basement where her adoptive father "worked," under the pretext of asking to be taught something, but Daisy could see that her sister’s expression looked terrified, and she was trying very hard not to show it.

Then, from time to time, her adoptive father would take her sister out, claiming he was meeting "business" associates and wanted to introduce her sister—who dreamed of becoming a scientist in Diamond City—to his colleagues.

Naturally, her mother allowed it, and even encouraged her sister to go with her husband, without ever noticing the expression on her face. Daisy continued to observe that, as time went on, her sister was no longer the person she used to know; her sister, who had always been cheerful and held big dreams, was now often seen looking gloomy, dazed, and sometimes even crying when she was alone.

Finally, driven by curiosity, the ten-year-old Daisy quietly followed her sister down into the basement of their house when their adoptive father called her. She wanted to know what was actually happening down there. When she peeked inside because she heard strange noises she had never heard before—the voices of many adult men talking—her eyes widened.

It turned out the basement her adoptive father had forbidden her from entering looked like a production studio with many cameras and a large television screen divided into many sections, showing the faces of various adults appearing on the screen.

But what made Daisy truly cover her mouth and force herself not to scream, even as her tears flowed freely, was seeing her sister completely without any clothes in front of the camera. Then, her adoptive father did many indecent and painful things to her sister’s body at the request of the men on the television screen.

After that, Daisy also saw her adoptive father sucking her sister’s blood from her neck, and only then did she realize that her adoptive father was someone who had undergone an awakening as a dhampir. Daisy sat leaning against the wall, covering her mouth and sobbing uncontrollably. She could hear her adoptive father continuing to follow the orders of the people watching, as they dictated what scenes he should perform on her sister.

Her sister already looked like a living corpse, resigned to whatever was done to her, appearing as though she no longer had any will to live. Finally, one of the men said that her adoptive father had to kill her sister. Daisy immediately turned back to look inside, but she couldn’t see clearly which man had said it because there were so many people on the television screen and almost all of them were talking at once.

Daisy could see that her adoptive father looked hesitant. Inside her heart, Daisy pleaded for her adoptive father not to follow the request of the people on the screen for once, but then her adoptive father shook his head to clear his doubt. He then twisted her sister’s neck until a loud sound rang out, and her sister’s body fell to the floor, lifeless.

Shocked and dazed, Daisy immediately ran out of the basement while covering her mouth because she was afraid, sad, and angry all at once. She called her mother and tried to reach her, but it turned out she was caught by her adoptive father, who was carrying her sister out of the basement to bury her behind the house—the place where he buried many of his victims.

Dennis, unable to bear watching the footage any longer, pushed away the body of Daisy Number Seven, who looked at his face with a confused expression. Dennis’s tears flowed heavily and both of his hands, which were holding onto Daisy Number Seven’s shoulders, trembled as his blood pressure rose to his head.

"I’m sorry, but please don’t show any more... I don’t want to see it... just tell me... after that, what happened to you," Dennis said, his voice faltering as he struggled to contain his emotions.

"I’m sorry, dear, I have to show it because it’s too heavy to just tell... let Number One finish the story," Daisy Number Seven said, looking down.

Daisy Number Seven immediately swapped back with the primary Daisy, Daisy Number One. Then, Dennis hugged Daisy tightly and wept—not out of sadness, but out of a burning rage and disbelief that something so tragic had befallen his wife. Once Dennis had calmed down again, Daisy continued her story,

"After that... my life was never the same. A year later, I also went through the same thing as my sister... but because I was still so young... those men preferred to watch me dance and do other things... but... when I was 14, they started asking me to do it with my adoptive father... that was when... suddenly I realized I wasn’t alone... there were six other people inside of me that I used to talk to by myself to let out everything I was bottling up, and of course, I fought back, because I felt like I wasn’t alone... and I finally gathered the courage to tell Mom," Daisy said.

"Did your Mom listen to you and not take that man’s side?" Dennis asked.

"At first, she defended that man, but when I showed her where he buried my sister—who had been declared missing and was presumed to have run away from home—Mom believed me instantly. She cried and apologized to me because I had almost suffered the same fate. She also regretted not realizing it sooner, which led to my sister’s tragic death... even though I was only groped and hadn’t actually done anything with him yet, Mom still felt that he had defiled me," Daisy answered.

"I see... so did your Mom call the police?" Dennis asked.

"Yes, that man was arrested and sent to prison. But a year later, when I was 15 and had just graduated from middle school... suddenly that man showed up at my house. He had escaped from prison and intended to kill me. He actually managed to stab me multiple times with a knife, and just as he was about to do all sorts of things to me while I was dying, Mom came home. He immediately stabbed her too... but then I experienced an awakening. The six personalities inside of me and me manifested, each with their own powers including me, and they beat that man until he was unconscious and in a coma. Then I saved Mom, who was also dying," Daisy answered.

"So after that, he was taken to Diamond City to stand trial there, and then thrown into Aquamarine City?" Dennis asked, guiding the story so it wouldn’t feel too heavy with questions.

"Yes, that’s right, because his victims weren’t just my sister; in the backyard of the house, they found about 40 more dead body of girls around my sister’s age. He was labeled a predator, and the Ruby City court decided that he had to stand trial in Diamond City. Then Mom said it would be best if I went to Emerald City and entered military school to become a hunter and follow in my Dad’s footsteps. That’s why I’m here, and I’m so grateful I married you in this city," Daisy answered, forcing herself to smile.

Dennis immediately hugged his wife, who was sitting on his lap, once more and kissed her forehead. In his heart, he promised that he would never let his wife experience anything like that again for the rest of her life. Daisy cried and hugged Dennis tightly because she could feel that Dennis truly loved her, even though he said nothing and only held her.
