Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Blind Corners

Jaxon had Cindy and Isabel resume their shooting practice. They wanted to help, but he convinced them that learning to fight was more beneficial.

Meanwhile, Jaxon began loading some of their food supplies and daily needs into Natasha’s car. This was only for emergencies. They still planned to look for a larger vehicle when the time came.

Natasha, on the other hand, held an online meeting with Burgors and the two siblings. They discussed their escape plan, shared information, and talked about possible places to take shelter. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Using the drone, she also scouted the area and marked routes that could be used if they needed to flee.

Two hours later, Jaxon and Natasha headed out to clear the infected Natasha had spotted with the drone.

At first, Natasha suggested using the drone to lure them out. But Jaxon shook his head and rejected the idea.

He had thought of the same plan, but it was too risky. The noise could draw infected near their home that they didn’t want to deal with, something they couldn’t possibly handle.

....

Soon, Jaxon lay flat on the balcony of a nearby house, his rifle steady in his hands.

Without a sound, the head of a zombie over a hundred meters away burst apart. At the same time, the familiar notification rang in his mind.

(1 exp, 1 coin, and 0.01 speed obtained from the zombie)

Natasha, who was watching through her binoculars, pulled out a pen and marked an X on the map.

"That’s the tenth target done. A few more to go, then we move to the next spot," she said softly.

They moved from house to house, careful and quiet, sniping the infected that Natasha had marked earlier.

They were like hunters, taking down their prey one by one. It was only possible because of their drone, and because there were only a few infected roaming this area.

After killing another zombie from a rooftop, Jaxon rolled his shoulders and stretched his stiff muscles, ready to move again. Then he froze.

Something moved in the distance.

"Natasha, thirty degrees north of east. I see movement," Jaxon said in a low voice as he peered through his scope.

Natasha immediately raised her binoculars, her eyebrows frowning.

"Hm? It’s Elena," Jaxon said quietly as he recognized the familiar black-haired woman.

"She’s not alone," Natasha added.

From the corner of the street, Elena moved sneakily, keeping low as she advanced. But she couldn’t fully hide her movements because there were two unfamiliar little girls following closely behind her.

Jaxon frowned. This was the first time he had seen them. Both looked young, maybe around fifteen, and they looked almost exactly the same. Twins.

As they continued watching, Natasha’s eyes suddenly widened.

"Wait," she said urgently. "The direction they’re heading. There are zombies hiding on the right corner."

Jaxon felt his heart sink as he understood the danger. "Damn it. That spot is hard to notice from their position. If they make even a small sound..."

Before they could find a way to warn them, what they feared happened.

.....

Minutes earlier, Elena led the two girls through the quiet streets, moving from house to house as they searched for food and medical supplies.

She guided them to a house with thick concrete walls. Instead of using the open street, she chose to climb over it.

Staying hidden was safer.

Elena went first, landing softly on the other side. She looked up and raised her hands.

"Jannah, don’t be afraid," she whispered. "Just jump. I will catch you."

Jannah stood on top of the wall, her small hands shaking. She looked down, swallowed hard, then closed her eyes and jumped.

Elena caught her at once. The girl made no sound.

"Good job, Jannah," Elena said quietly, giving her a small smile.

She then looked up again. "Hiromi, your turn. Come on, jump."

Hiromi stepped forward preparing to jump, but then stopped.

Her body stiffened.

"Hiromi?" Elena whispered, confused. "What’s wrong? Jump."

The girl did not answer.

Hiromi’s eyes were wide, locked on something beyond the wall. Her breathing grew uneven. Slowly, she raised a trembling finger and pointed.

Her other hand flew to her mouth, holding back a scream.

Elena’s smile vanished.

As she turned, a twisted head slid out from the corner at the same moment.

The infected’s face was broken and bloody, its jaw hanging at a wrong angle. Its mouth opened.

Before a sound could escape, an arrow shot forward and buried itself deep inside its mouth.

The body dropped.

Elena did not hesitate. Her movement was sharp and clean, no different from firing a gun. But the body hitting the ground still made a sound.

From the shadows, something moved.

Another infected rushed out, eyes locked on them. It did not slow down, did not hesitate. It immediately charged at them in a burst of speed.

Thud.

Its head snapped back as if it had run into a wall. An arrow pierced straight through its skull, and the body slid across the ground.

More movement followed. Shapes stirred in the dark corners.

"Jannah, get behind me," Elena said quickly. "Climb back up. Now."

She grabbed the girl and pushed her toward the wall. Jannah reached up, her fingers barely catching the edge. Her arms shook as she tried to pull herself up.

In just a few seconds, more infected poured out from the same blind corner. Three of them now.

Elena’s heart sank. If she focused on helping Jannah climb, they would be caught. The wall was still too high, and the infected were already only a few meters away.

"Hiromi, help your sister up," Elena shouted as she turned and pulled her bow.

The sudden movement made Jannah lose her balance.

"Ahhh!"

Her body slipped, but Hiromi caught her hand just in time, her small fingers digging in as she held on with all her strength.

Elena released an arrow.

One infected dropped.

She stepped back at once and pulled another arrow.

"Step on my back, Jannah," Elena said, her voice steady despite the chaos.
