My Stepmother Is an Ex-Demon Queen-Chapter 55 - 56 – Ashes and Chains
Recap of the Previous Chapter
The rooftop battle collapsed into chaos as Lilith, Kazuki, and the hunter plummeted into the abyss. Flames, steel, and shattered stone filled the void as they clashed midair. Lilith fought desperately to protect Kazuki, even as the hunter taunted her with whispered promises and old claims. Every strike reminded her of the chains she had once broken—the vows that still bound her in ways she hadn’t faced. With the ex-husband watching from above, laughing at the descent, the fall became more than a battle for survival. It was a test of what Lilith truly belonged to: her freedom, her fire, or the darkness of her past.
Main Story
Impact.
The world struck her like a hammer.
Lilith’s flames softened the fall, but even fire couldn’t erase the violence of colliding with stone after a hundred-foot drop. Her back slammed into the ground, fire bursting outward like a dying star. Dust and smoke choked the air, and pain rattled her bones until she could hardly breathe.
Beside her, Kazuki hit with a cry, rolling across jagged rock. He coughed, clutching his ribs, but he was alive. Barely.
Lilith forced herself upright, her vision swimming. Her body trembled with exhaustion, every ember of her fire threatening to flicker out. The abyss they had fallen into wasn’t empty. It was a cavern—vast, hollow, and reeking of ash. Broken statues lined the walls, their faces eroded into mockeries of sorrow. Chains dangled from the ceiling, clinking softly in the wind that howled through the darkness.
And standing amid the dust, unshaken by the fall, was the hunter.
He rose slowly, blade dragging sparks across the stone as he stepped forward. His eyes locked on hers, unwavering, as though nothing else in the world existed. "Do you remember this place, Lilith?" His voice echoed in the cavern, deep and resonant, carrying the weight of centuries.
Lilith’s chest tightened. She did remember. Too well.
This cavern wasn’t just an accident of the fall. It was a ruin. A prison. Once, long ago, she had stood here—not as a warrior, but as a bride.
Her fingers trembled against the hilt of her sword.
The hunter smiled faintly, his tone almost tender. "You swore eternal fire to me here. You bound yourself with chains you forged of your own will. And yet... you abandoned it."
Kazuki staggered to his feet, his blade raised though his breath came shallow. "She doesn’t belong to you. Whatever vow you think you had—it’s ashes now."
The hunter’s gaze flicked toward him, sharp as a blade. "Ashes? No... not ashes. Embers. Waiting to reignite." He turned his eyes back to Lilith. "Tell him, Lilith. Tell him what you gave me here, in the dark."
Lilith’s breath caught. Chains rattled around her, as if the cavern itself remembered her betrayal. The statues of faceless watchers seemed to lean closer, their hollow eyes accusing.
She shut her eyes, fire flickering uncertainly in her palms. No. Not now. Don’t let him drag you back.
Kazuki stepped closer, voice urgent. "Don’t listen to him. Whatever this place is, whatever happened here—it doesn’t matter. You’re not bound anymore. You chose freedom. You chose us."
The hunter’s grin widened, cruel and knowing. "And yet she hasn’t told you, has she? She hasn’t spoken of the chains that still bind her heart. She hasn’t confessed the vow she broke."
Lilith snapped, fire flaring bright enough to silence the cavern’s whispers. "Enough!" Her voice cracked, equal parts fury and desperation. She turned to Kazuki, eyes blazing with pain. "He’s right. I did swear myself here. I did give him everything—my fire, my soul, my eternity. I broke it all to escape."
Kazuki’s face hardened, but his voice was steady. "Then break it again."
The words struck her like lightning. Simple. Fierce. Unyielding.
Her knees buckled. For centuries, she had carried the guilt of that vow, buried under fire and rage. But hearing Kazuki speak it so plainly—like it was possible—made her heart tremble.
The hunter’s smile faded into something darker, colder. "So be it."
He raised his blade, and chains burst from the cavern walls, whipping through the air like serpents. They wrapped around Lilith’s arms, her waist, her throat. She gasped as the cold steel burned hotter than fire, searing old memories into her skin.
Kazuki lunged forward, slicing one chain apart, but three more snapped into place. He roared, cutting wildly, but the chains multiplied, binding them both.
The hunter advanced, his steps measured, unhurried. "Fight all you like. Chains are not broken by steel. Only by surrender."
Lilith thrashed, her flames roaring to life, but the chains drank her fire like water, glowing red-hot but never breaking. Pain ripped through her chest as if the vow itself was tightening, choking her.
"Lilith!" Kazuki cried, straining against the bindings. "Look at me! Not him—me!"
Her vision blurred. The hunter’s face loomed close, eyes gleaming with hunger. His whisper brushed against her ear, intimate and suffocating. "Say it. Admit that you still belong to me, and I’ll free you."
Tears burned her eyes. The chains cut deeper. The cavern seemed to close in.
Then she heard Kazuki again, his voice hoarse but unwavering. "You don’t belong to him. You never did. You’re fire, Lilith—wild, untamed. You belong to yourself."
The words struck something deep inside her, deeper than vows, deeper than chains. Something primal, something that had always burned, even when she was caged.
Her fire erupted—not white, not red, but black. The cavern trembled, statues cracking, chains screaming as her flames devoured them. The hunter’s eyes widened, his hand recoiling from the searing heat.
Lilith tore free, her scream shaking the cavern. "I am no one’s prisoner!" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Chains shattered around her, exploding into sparks that rained across the ruins. Kazuki stumbled free as well, his blade blazing with her fire.
The hunter’s grin returned, sharper than ever. "Yes. That’s it. That’s the fire I wanted." His eyes burned with obsession. "Now burn for me, Lilith—burn until nothing remains."
The cavern roared, fire and steel colliding once more.
