Chapter 146: Devour

The battlefield remained quiet for several seconds after Cain finished speaking.

The Emperor powerhouses stood scattered across the ruined ground, their breathing heavy, their bodies aching from the long battle that had drained nearly all the strength they possessed. The Devouring Blood Tree loomed behind Cain like a living mountain made from flesh and crimson bark. Its endless branches stretched high into the dark sky of the Nightmare Realm while its countless tentacles moved slowly across the battlefield like snakes waiting for the moment to strike.

The old rabbit finally broke the silence.

His ears trembled slightly as he stared up at Cain.

His voice came out hoarse.

"What... are you?"

The question hung in the air.

The other Emperors looked at Cain as well. Even the followers who had been hiding farther behind raised their heads in fear and curiosity. None of them had ever seen a being like this. No creature they had fought before could stand still and endure their combined attacks as if those attacks were nothing more than light taps.

Cain looked down at the old rabbit.

For a moment he said nothing.

Then a slow smile appeared across his pale face.

"Oh?"

He tilted his head slightly.

"You want to know?"

The old rabbit tightened his grip on his bone staff.

"Yes," he said. "Tell me."

Cain’s crimson eyes glowed faintly.

"I am an Overgod Vampire."

The words sounded simple when he spoke them, but the weight behind them pressed down on the entire battlefield.

The horned Emperor frowned.

"Overgod?"

The snake humanoid hissed.

"What kind of title is that?"

The old rabbit looked confused as well.

"What does that mean?"

Cain chuckled softly.

"It means something very simple."

He raised one hand and pointed lazily toward the Emperor army.

"It means I am something above you."

Those words had barely left his mouth when the Devouring Blood Tree suddenly moved.

The ground shook violently.

A deep rumbling noise spread through the earth like thunder rolling beneath the soil.

The massive trunk of the tree twisted slightly. Its branches stretched outward as if awakening from a long sleep. Then the countless tentacles hanging from the branches began to move all at once.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Blood-red tendrils surged across the battlefield like a living ocean.

Cain spread his arms as if presenting a performance.

"Well then," he said calmly.

"Now try to survive."

The first tentacle slammed into the ground where an Emperor had been standing only a moment before.

BOOM.

The earth cracked open.

"RUN!" someone screamed.

Chaos exploded across the battlefield.

The Emperor powerhouses leapt into the air or dashed across the broken ground as the tentacles chased them relentlessly. Every direction they turned, another wave of flesh tendrils came crashing toward them.

The horned Emperor roared as he swung his flaming fists, blasting apart several tentacles that tried to wrap around his body.

The snake humanoid slithered across the battlefield at incredible speed, his long body weaving between the snapping tendrils.

Spells filled the air again.

Lightning bolts struck the tentacles.

Blades of wind sliced them apart.

Flames burned them.

Yet the tentacles continued coming.

More rose from the earth every second.

Cain stood above the battlefield watching the chaos unfold like a king enjoying a show.

He shook his head slowly.

"Your magic spells are still weak," he said lazily.

Below him, one Emperor launched a massive wave of ice that froze several tentacles in place.

Cain sighed.

"Too slow."

The frozen tentacles shattered as new ones slammed forward.

Another Emperor fired a beam of dark energy that carved a deep hole through a wall of flesh.

Cain chuckled.

"Too weak."

The tentacles closed the gap again.

An Emperor tried to flee into the sky, his body surrounded by lightning as he flew upward.

A massive tentacle shot after him like a spear.

The Emperor screamed as the tendril wrapped around his leg and dragged him back down.

Cain watched calmly.

"No matter how fast you run," he said.

"You will all be caught eventually."

Across the battlefield, the old rabbit ran.

His short legs moved faster than they ever had before.

His robe whipped behind him as he leapt across shattered ground and broken roots.

He did not look back.

He only ran.

Behind him he could hear the screaming.

"MASTER!"

"Help us!"

"Master, save me!"

The cries stabbed into his heart like knives.

One of his disciples had fallen. The young rabbit warrior had been grabbed by three tentacles at once. The tendrils wrapped around his body and dragged him screaming across the ground.

"Master!"

The old rabbit clenched his teeth.

He kept running.

Another voice cried out.

"Master please!"

A human disciple reached toward him desperately while a tentacle coiled around his waist.

The old rabbit’s ears trembled.

His heart felt like it was being torn apart.

Yet his feet never stopped moving.

He ran faster.

The screams behind him grew louder.

Then suddenly they stopped.

One by one.

Silence replaced them.

The old rabbit felt tears burn inside his eyes.

But he did not stop running.

His mind screamed at him to turn back.

To fight.

To save them.

But he knew it was impossible.

That monster... that thing calling itself an Overgod Vampire... was beyond anything they had ever imagined.

The old rabbit ran deeper into the broken forest.

His breathing grew rough.

His heart pounded painfully inside his chest.

And as he ran...

Memories began rising in his mind.

He remembered the first time he had looked up at the sky and dreamed of reaching a higher realm.

He had been young then.

Weak.

Just a small rabbit spirit living in a dangerous world.

He had watched powerful cultivators fly across the sky while he hid inside the forest.

Back then he had promised himself something.

One day he would become strong enough to leave that world behind.

One day he would step into a higher realm where true power existed.

That dream had guided his entire life.

He trained.

He fought.

He betrayed enemies.

He sacrificed allies.

Every step he took was meant to bring him closer to the higher realm.

And then...

One day...

The sky tore open.

A crack appeared in the dimension itself.

He still remembered the excitement he felt when he saw that tear in the sky.

He believed it was his chance.

His path to the higher realm.

He gathered his disciples.

He led them through the dimensional tear with confidence.

He believed that beyond it waited glory and power.

He believed everything would be easy.

The old rabbit let out a bitter laugh as he ran.

"How foolish..."

The Nightmare Realm had been waiting on the other side.

And inside it...

Cain.

Another scream echoed behind him.

"MASTER!"

The old rabbit did not look back.

Tears rolled silently down his fur.

Then suddenly—

Something wrapped around his leg.

The old rabbit froze.

A blood-red tentacle had caught him.

It tightened around his ankle like iron chains.

His body jerked to a stop.

"No..."

He raised his bone staff and unleashed a powerful spell.

A storm of lightning crashed down on the tentacle.

But the flesh did not break.

He fired another spell.

A blade of wind struck the tendril again and again.

Still nothing happened.

The tentacle did not loosen.

The old rabbit’s eyes widened with horror.

"No... break!"

He unleashed every spell he knew.

Fire.

Lightning.

Ice.

Wind.

The magic slammed against the tentacle again and again.

But the flesh did not tear.

It did not crack.

It did not even slow down.

The tentacle tightened.

Then it pulled.

The old rabbit screamed as his body was dragged across the ground.

"No!"

The earth opened beneath him.

The tentacle pulled him underground.

Darkness swallowed him.

The old rabbit struggled wildly while casting more spells.

But none of them worked.

The blood tentacle held him firmly as it dragged him deeper and deeper into the earth.

Finally the tunnel opened into a wide cavern beneath the roots of the Devouring Blood Tree.

The old rabbit slammed onto the ground.

His staff rolled away from his hand.

Slowly he lifted his head.

Then his eyes widened.

All around him...

Bodies were piled together.

His disciples.

Rabbit warriors.

Human Mana cultivators.

Snake warriors.

Creatures from many races.

Their bodies were stacked together like meat in a butcher’s shop.

Arms.

Legs.

Broken armor.

Blood.

None of them were breathing.

The old rabbit’s body trembled as he stared at them.

They were all dead.
