Chapter 134: Hierarchy

Chapter 132

Slowly turning his head around like a broken doll, Felix stared deep into Ray’s eyes.

He was searching for something, perhaps—a flicker of doubt or a hint of true understanding.

Whatever it was, he refused to break eye contact with the Tribrid sitting before him.

Then suddenly, a sharp chuckle escaped his mouth.

It started as just a single note, then another followed, and another, until it spiraled into full-blown laughter.

It was a jagged sound, making him seem almost like a lunatic of some kind.

But soon enough, the mirth abruptly paused.

The wind gently whistled between them as the silence stretched into heavy seconds before Felix slowly lifted his head.

A grim tone laced his words as he said,

"You really don’t want to know anything about the werewolf world. Because if you insist to, I will have to kill you."

Instantly, Ray was on guard.

His eyes slanted like a predatory cat as one hand behind his back tensed, ready to unleash a surge of lightning the moment Felix tried to make a move.

As if sensing this sudden shift in the atmosphere, Felix smiled and placed his palm over his face.

"Of course, I won’t do anything to you... now. I’m just warning you that I can’t tell you anything about that world because I can’t risk the information getting out to the humans."

Ray raised an eyebrow in genuine confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Felix frowned, his expression darkening.

"What? Just because I call you my brother, doesn’t mean that I can just out things you were meant to know but don’t. You are still part human though, so unfortunately; I can’t tell you anything."

He paused, retreating into thought for a few moments then added:

"Yes. I can surely tell you about the types of werewolves we have, though. That’s the least I can do so you can get an idea of your standing. Also," Felix uttered as he rubbed his temples in a weary gesture.

"... I think it’s almost a week since I have been here and I have been able to gauge humanity’s strength and their weird ranking measures. So I should be able to compare the werewolf hierarchy with that of humans."

Ray shifted a bit, his mind racing.

Something suddenly crossed his mind, a cold realization that made his skin crawl.

’Hold on. What if he isn’t actually here to search for an ’author’? But here to research humanity’s strength? Why do I even feel somewhat uneasy?’

But regardless of his suspicions, he readied himself.

He wanted to know everything he possibly could about the werewolf race.

Why was he so curious?

Well, the answer was simple.

He had the werewolf bloodline pulsing within him.

Even though he needed Bruce’s assistance to fully transform for now, he knew that with the continued use of the system, he would be able to achieve that feat on his own soon.

However, existing or transforming without knowing anything about this primal bloodline was somewhat risky, and he needed to gather every scrap of data he could find.

The ranks, their physical strengths, their inherent weaknesses...

’Actually, I don’t think their weaknesses apply to me... yet. I feel normal for some reason. According to research, werewolves do crave flesh, yet I feel okay.’

"Ahem..." Clearing his throat, Felix prepared to speak.

"First off, before I begin; I want you to throw away anything you must have read in fantasy books about us. Most of those stories are incorrect, bloated, and mixed with blatant lies," he said, watching as Ray listened intently with occasional, rhythmic nods.

"... Alright, so I will be starting with our ranks. First off; we have the Runts."

’Runts?’

"Yes. Runts. These werewolves are the weakest in our hierarchy, yet they are incredibly dangerous."

"Dangerous? How so?" Ray asked with a raised brow.

Felix seemed to be in deep thought for a moment before he replied,

"They are feral. I know werewolves are usually feral by nature, but these guys are always feral... almost like mindless beasts.

And they are always much more feral when they see human meat. They could literally fight to the death for a single piece of meat."

A sudden, icy chill ran down Ray’s spine as he tried to imagine a ravenous pack of werewolves fighting over human remains.

"... But they aren’t a completely lost cause, though, as they won’t fight with each other and actually cohabit peacefully. Also, these guys; like I said, are the weakest, yet they are always in their werewolf form.

For some reason, they can’t shift back, so they are cursed to remain in that state unless they somehow evolve. Being a runt is crazy."

Ray rubbed his arm in deep thought, but before he could dwell on it further, Felix continued.

"Then we have the Omega werewolves. These types are not overwhelmingly strong, but they aren’t exactly weak either. Most of the time, new werewolves land this rank.

Omega werewolves actually have their intelligence intact. Ninety percent of them can’t fully transform unless it’s a full moon or a similar event.

However, they can partially transform at will. Although a peak Omega werewolf can still fully transform, those kinds are usually rare since most of them are descendants of one of the powerful families."

’Families?’

"Then we have the Gamma rank. These guys are stronger than standard Omega werewolves but might struggle against the peak Omegas. Their role is guarding."

"So they are basically mere guards?" Ray asked with a raised brow.

Felix simply nodded.

"Exactly. Guards with considerable strength. They patrol the werewolf settlement, enforcing laws and keeping everybody in check.

Most of them also serve as personal guards to the powerful families I mentioned earlier. So instead of mere guards, think of them as something akin to knights."

Ray nodded along.

Unknown to him, Bruce was actually paying rapt attention within his mind.

With his memories wiped, he was trying to see if he could relearn anything possible to help his condition.

Felix exhaled sharply before continuing:

"Moving up, we have the Beta werewolves. Honestly, you don’t want to mess with these guys."

"Huh? Why?"

Felix smiled tiredly as he turned to face Ray for a moment.

"Remember those powerful families I spoke about?"

The Tribrid nodded.

"Well, they are the leaders. Each of the six families is governed by a Beta werewolf. They are so strong that your so-called grade 7 or even grade 8 meta-humans would struggle immensely, and your side might still lose."

’What? Are they truly that strong, or is he just hyping them?’

"And nope, I’m really not hyping them. They genuinely possess the strength to wipe out towns or even entire cities alone. If a Beta should step onto the battlefield, then it’s game over. Imagine if all six did. Rarely does the Alpha even make an appearance."

Felix paused before chuckling a bit.

"Which brings us to the next rank: The Alpha werewolf. The strongest of all werewolves and the absolute ruler of the werewolf settlement.

History has it that there are never two Alphas at once; if there were, an inevitable battle would occur where one would have to take the other out."

Ray gulped silently as a feeling of dread began to rise in his chest.

Oblivious to this, Felix continued:

"Also, before I forget, we have the Prime Gamma. These guys serve as the Alpha’s personal guards. They answer only to the Alpha and nobody else. These individuals are usually selected from one of the six Beta families. I really don’t want to go into the finer details."

Ray rubbed his temples in deep thought, calmly processing everything Felix had just revealed.

The half-moon was already high in the sky, illuminating their faces with a pale glow.

Unconsciously, Ray stared at his watch to check the time.

9:15 pm

They had just forty-five minutes before curfew.

But looking at the teen werewolf, one specific thought ran through Ray’s mind, and he was intent on getting an answer.

"So... what type of werewolf are you?"

Felix’s lips curled into a knowing smile as his eyes unknowingly flashed a vibrant yellow at the question.

"A peak Omega werewolf."
