Bettie nodded, although the look of concern was still on her face.
Valerie spoke up. "She told me her place of living is in Hickory Quarters, and I know that’s pretty darn far from this point. I’m sure Eduardo would have no fun driving to that end of the city at this time of night."
Ethan turned to Bettie. "So have you informed your family of your situation then?"
Bettie nodded and raised her Arcphone slightly. "I did, not long ago."
Ethan nodded. "That’s good then."
He turned to Valerie. "Tonight, you’re to tend to Elizabeth. See to it she gets what she needs to be comfortable in this place. Whether it be a change of clothes or a warm bath."
"Yes, Master Ethan," Valerie said with a respectful nod. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Bettie quickly said, "It’s fine, really. I don’t want to be a bother."
She was trying to sound modest, not wanting to impose.
Ethan shook his head. "It’s partly my fault that you aren’t able to go home tonight. So since you’re here, it’s only fair that I make sure you feel as comfortable as possible."
She nodded with a small smile. "Thank you, Stark."
Ethan nodded back and left the room.
Valerie stayed behind, walking closer toward Bettie with a gentle smile. "Okay, so let’s get you a change of clothes first."

Although the city remained shrouded in darkness, it was past midnight, and deep into the early hours of the morning.
In a modest two-story house, somewhat hidden away in a quiet district, a man lay on his back in bed. His eyes were closed, but he was far from asleep.
Then he heard it, that faint creak. After that, a soft groan of a floorboard just outside his door.
His eyes opened instantly.
He was never one for visitors and hadn’t received any in so long that he couldn’t remember the last time it had happened. Or if it had ever happened at all.
This made him sit upright quickly as a red magic circle materialized in his palm. From it emerged his weapon, Katarina.
The sniper artifact appeared in its full form, sleek and deadly, with red miasma already coiling around it.
He quickly lifted himself off the bed just as the door burst open.
Two men stormed in. One had a sword drawn, and the other had magic energy emanating around his heavily muscled body. This one was warrior class.
The first lunged forward with his sword raised.
But right then, the hitman raised Katarina and fired without hesitation.
BANG.
The shot tore through the man’s chest at point-blank range, sending him crashing backward into the second intruder.
Before the second man could recover, the hitman fired again.
BANG.
The man’s head snapped back violently, and he collapsed in a heap.
But there were more. He could hear them downstairs. And there were atleast four, maybe five.
He moved to the window, threw it open, and leaped out just as the remaining men reached his bedroom door. He hit the ground in a crouch and immediately broke into a sprint.
A few moments later, the house exploded behind him. This was the Hitman’s doing, and in anticipation for any day something like this was ever to happen.
A violent eruption of fire and debris lit up the entire street. The walls were blown outward in all directions, the shockwave rattled the windows of neighboring buildings, shattering a few.
But the hitman didn’t look back. He sprinted down the narrow alley and came to a halt at its end, assessing his next move.
"Katarina. Compact mode," he said calmly.
The sniper reacted immediately. It vibrated in his palm for a brief moment, then suddenly its length collapsed, folding in on itself until it condensed into a short-barreled form, no longer than a large pistol.
He raised it toward a building ahead and aimed at the rooftop ledge.
"Grappling," he said, then fired.
THWIP.
A grappling line shot out from the barrel toward the rooftop as the hooked end embedded itself firmly into the ledge.
The line went taut, and he was yanked upward, soaring through the air as the mechanism reeled him in.
He landed on the rooftop in a low crouch, from there, he turned back toward the street below.
"Sniper mode," he muttered.
Katarina expanded instantly, lengthening back into its full deadly form. He dropped to one knee, balanced the stock against his shoulder, and peered through the scope.
Below, one of the pursuers had just emerged from the smoke. The man was coughing violently and scanning the alley.
The hitman’s finger then pulled the trigger, and almost in the same instant, the bullet traveled and hit the man’s skull.
His body jerked and fell to the ground lifeless.
The hitman then stood from his position and whispered. "Compact."
The weapon shifted sizes once again, shrinking back into its smaller form. He turned and sprinted across the rooftop, wearing only his pants and nothing else.
He reached the edge and dropped off without hesitation.
For a split second, it looked like he was going to fall. But he lifted his gun upward toward the next rooftop and fired.
THWIP.
The grappling hook latched onto the ledge above, and the line pulled him upward sharply.
He swung through the air and landed hard on the next rooftop. The rooftop after that wasn’t far, so he made a running leap that carried him across the gap.
And with that, Hitman X was on the run.
—
Back at the burning wreckage of the house, a tall, heavily built man emerged from the smoke and flames.
He wore suspenders over a dirty white shirt that was tight across his broad chest. A scar ran down one side of his face, cutting through his brow and stopping just above his jawline. A half-smoked cigar hung from the corner of his mouth.
Behind him, members of his gang began to filter out from the rubble, coughing and shaking off dust.
"Everyone, spread out and find him!" his voice thundered across the street.
He looked down at the dead body lying at his feet, then pulled the cigar from his mouth, spat on the corpse, and muttered, "Useless."
Then he looked forward with a hardened expression.
An orange-like aura began seeping out of his body, swirling around his arms and legs.
He whispered to himself, "No one is taking that money away from me."
He took one step forward. Then another, faster this time. It became a short run before he finally gave one full, giant leap away from the ground.
He soared through the air, with body propelled by raw guardian-class strength. He landed several blocks away with a heavy crash that cracked the ground beneath his feat.
Then he took another leap, and another, bounding across rooftops and streets.
The chase was on.
