Chapter 429: Demon Wall

After going up the staircase that led to the tower’s second floor, we were surprised to see that the large pillars covered in coral were also present on that floor.

Compared to the first floor, where we had to use magic to light our way, the second floor was slightly more illuminated—though we couldn’t tell where the light was coming from.

Vespera’s spiders had already found the next set of stairs that led to the third floor, and she explained that there seemed to be a "demon wall" blocking the way.

"A demon wall? Like, a lot of demons standing next to each other?" I pondered aloud, prompting Vespera to shake her head in denial.

"It’s a demon wall," She continued.

Nessa interjected and explained that demon walls were constructs that were created to test other demons’ capabilities. Some walls were much tougher than others, and if a devil broke through one of them with their power, others would get a rough idea of how strong they were.

It took us a little over twenty minutes to reach the supposed demon wall. We got ambushed a few times, but the devils on the second floor were pretty much the same level as the fiends on the bottom, so they weren’t really a problem.

When we got to the wall, we noticed that it stretched from one side of the room to the other. Considering each of these floors had a radius of approximately 30-50km, it was quite impressive to see it there.

The wall seemed to be made of a red metal that reflected the light, almost like a gem—and as I got closer and gave it a knock with my knuckles to check for its durability, the red metal in front of me started to warp and contort, making the shape of a face.

"Ehh?" I hummed, slightly confused, and raised my bo. Still, Nessa calmed me down and said it was normal.

"I thought you said we had to break through the wall?" I asked.

"We do!" Nessa replied, but before she could continue elaborating, the face on the wall spoke to us in a loud and deep voice.

"Only the strong may pass!" said the foreboding face.

Nessa took a step forward and volunteered herself, and since only she and Jackson knew what to do with these walls, we allowed her to continue and show us how to take care of them.

As Nessa stood in front of the wall in her hybrid form, she pulled her fist back and started charging it with demonic energy.

There was no reason for Nessa to hide her powers or her appearance from the others anymore, which allowed her to use her abilities more freely.

After a few seconds of concentration, the face on the wall opened its mouth and warped into a target, which Nessa punched with all her might, generating a small explosion at the impact point.

When the smoke dissipated, we saw that the wall had lowered a chunk of it, allowing us to go through to the other side of the second floor.

"I may have overdone it a bit..." Nessa muttered.

While making our way to the staircase, Melina and I used our voice crystals to communicate with the other groups.

Yuki and Sage Astra were already on their way to the second floor, and we were told that most of the devils on the bottom floor were being eradicated, so the rest of the groups would follow soon enough.

I didn’t want to get too much ahead of the other groups. If they needed our help, it wouldn’t be a long trail back, so I was glad that they were moving pretty quickly.

Once we crossed the wall, it took us thirty more minutes of flying at high speeds to reach the staircase. Again, we were ambushed a few times by fiends, and while they were slightly stronger than the previous ones, they still posed no problems.

The third floor was smaller than the rest, or at least the two we had seen. There were fewer corals and rock formations, so the space looked way more open as well, which allowed us to see the devils roaming around.

"These are high fiends..." Jackson commented.

The demons looked like the other fiends we encountered. However, their arms seemed to have sharp bones coming out of their elbows, and they had two pointy horns on their forehead.

As soon as they spotted us, the high fiends rushed to attack us, and their speed let us know that they were definitely stronger than the others.

Still, our group had two dragons, two legendary beasts, and two sages—in other words, the fiends didn’t really have a chance.

Considering that they used the sharp bones in their arms to attack, I was able to deflect all of their blows with my magic bo easily, so I didn’t even have to spend any MP.

After taking down a lot more devils than we had planned, we managed to arrive at the staircase leading to the fourth floor, which was very similar to the third.

The only difference we found on the fourth floor was that there were high fiends who could also fly, but the size of the room was approximately the same.

We knew that Vespera had lost one of her demon spiders while trying to scout the fifth floor, so we decided to take it slower.

My companion didn’t see what happened to her spider, which meant that we couldn’t plan a way to counter whatever it was.

Once we made sure that the other group of soldiers were also moving up to the floors we left behind, I told everyone in my group that I would be going first up the stairs. Since I had Yoru inside my shadow, I was pretty confident that nothing could attack me from behind.

My group followed not too far behind me, but I wanted them to keep a distance in case there was a trap.

After going up a couple of stairs, I noticed that the walls and ceiling looked different than the other staircases. They usually had the same obsidian smooth stone that the whole tower was made out of, but at that moment, it looked like flesh.
