Chapter 279: Alien Beast Tide (3)

Ding!

[Congratulations on upgrading the Virtual Map twice.]

Nanzhi’s eyes lit up.

Now, the Virtual Map had truly become like one in a mobile game!

Minutes later, inside the sewer tunnels, Nanzhi and her team moved forward. It wasn’t long before they encountered a group of mutant rats.

To prevent the risk of a methane explosion, they could not use firearms or Feng Ran and Weihao’s abilities.

Feng Ran was left at the community center together with Hei Qian.

One could hear the sound of thousands of little feet tapping against the pipes.

The underground sewers were dark, just like the ones near the Empire Building. The only sources of light came from their headgear.

Even so, it wasn’t a problem for Nanzhi—especially after the Virtual Map upgrade.

After being upgraded twice, the underground layers unfolded like a blueprint. Sewer tunnels, maintenance shafts, and collapsed sections were clearly marked.

Red dots. Blue dots within ten kilometers.

The alien beasts appeared as red clusters.

The blue dots indicated the survivors.

Besides this, the system said she would even be able to see resource points in the future!

Nanzhi felt incredibly motivated. After defeating the tide and once the heatwave passed, she would make a round trip around Jade City and strip every resource point bare!

But right now, she had to deal with these mutant rats first.

"Bingwen, there are thirty on your left! Baoyin, around forty on your right! Weihao, at least fifty ahead!"

"Screee!" The rats extended their sharp claws and bared their teeth.

Although Weihao could not use his ability underground, his combat skills were still top-notch. Together with Nanzhi, the two cleared everything in their path. Each swing of the bolo machete claimed three to four rats.

Bingwen slashed every rat that leapt at him.

Baoyin smashed every rat that dared bite her with her customized club.

Meanwhile, white threads slipped out of Nanzhi’s backpack, collecting the spars from the rats’ corpses.

"Chi chi!" Little Snowball chirped happily. So many! So many! We’re rich!

Some rats attempted sneak attacks, but with the upgraded Virtual Map, their plans were doomed to fail. They were killed before they could even touch the four’s armor.

With their team of four, they pushed through the tunnels. The sewer system branched endlessly ahead, forming a maze. Everyone looked to Nanzhi for directions.

"The second one!"

"Take the third!"

"The one on the left!"

Just like the tide above, these rats were rushing toward Longmen Base too. Their numbers were not to be underestimated, but compared to the tide above, the four would rather deal with these.

Except for the tunnels leading near the areas where survivors were gathered, Nanzhi blocked the rest with debris she had stored beforehand. She also dumped large amounts of rat repellent, dispersing the Tier 0 rats immediately. The number of rats they encountered greatly decreased.

Nanzhi’s EXP bar continued to rise.

Not long after, they reached the first group of survivors.

The third floor of the building had become their last refuge.

Desks were overturned. Filing cabinets were dragged against the stairwell entrance. The glass windows had already been shattered, and the sounds of alien beasts drifted inside. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Below them—the tide howled.

Claws scraped against the outer walls.

Inside, nearly fifty old, young, and injured survivors huddled together. Among them were Tao’er, Grandpa Meng, and Dai Yun, treating the wounded.

Ability users stood at the front, including the Iron Gale Squad, Zhao Mo, Luo Gang, and others.

Zhao Mo, blood running down his temples, gritted his teeth. His trembling palms pulled moisture from the air, forming spinning water blades that beheaded alien beasts leaping through the broken doorway.

Beside him, Wu Hao and the other wind-type users kept their hands raised, sharp gusts slicing outward whenever shadows lunged too close.

Zhao Lin and the wood-type users pressed both hands against the cracked floor. Thick vines burst upward along the stair railing, reinforcing the barricade.

Earth-type users slammed their fists down. The cement floor rippled, raising a crude stone barrier at the stair entrance.

Liu Ming, Wang Bo, and the other strength-type awakeners stood at the front, breathing heavily, metal rods clenched in their hands.

"Don’t let them up!" Wang Bo roared.

Alien beasts burst through the stairwell door.

The frontline charged. Metal rods smashed down, crushing bones.

But four more leapt over the fallen bodies.

More time passed.

Below them—the tide climbed.

Everyone was exhausted. The ability users struggled to release their powers.

"I... can’t..." one of the wood-type users whispered weakly before collapsing to his knees. The vines withered instantly.

Zhao Lin shouted for someone to carry him back.

A wind user tried to compensate, sending one final sharp gust—only to faint mid-motion. Wu Hao quickly ordered someone to drag him away.

Before long, more and more were unable to continue.

Suddenly, a Tier 3 Buffalo stepped into view at the stairwell, its massive shadow swallowing the doorway.

The metal rods and other attacks couldn’t leave a scratch.

"It’s high rank!"

Against a high rank, even at their peak strength, none of them could defeat it.

They could only escape.

But inside the building—where could they escape?

The strength-type users behind Wang Bo and Liu Ming turned pale. "We’re done..."

"Fall back!" Wang Bo roared.

The creature lunged at the pillars supporting the stairs and hallway above.

"No! This is bad!" Wang Bo shouted for everyone to attack again, but the ability users were already drained.

They could only watch with pale faces.

To their astonishment, the Tier 3 Buffalo’s head snapped violently to the side.

A blade had pierced straight through its eye.

It collapsed.

In the next moment, sounds erupted outside. The alien beasts crowding the building entrance were swiftly eliminated.

Four figures stood in the blood-stained hallway.

The one in the lead wore a down trench coat.

"Sister Nanzhi!" Zhao Lin recognized her.

At her voice, Dai Yun, the Iron Gale Squad, Luo Gang, Tao’er—even Grandpa Meng—rushed to the railing.

Nanzhi was a beat slower to react. Her eyes were instantly locked onto Grandpa Meng.

Master.

He’s here?
