Netori SSS-Emperor: All Queens Shall Be Mine!-Chapter 46: A Crack In The Aegis
Chapter 46 - A Crack In The Aegis
While the difference between Wolf and Kanna was nearly triple in terms of stats, the priestess's conjured summon was effortlessly matching the prince's speed and even reflecting his attacks. Being a creature of light with no real substance, the only thing stopping it from shattering was the continuous outpour of mana by the priestess. And while she was being healed by the magic circle, her summon was in turn being powered by her magic. Then how do you break such a meticulous defensive strategy?
By overpowering it tremendously, of course. And yet, Wolf's blows could barely put a dent in the aegis. The swords kept driving him away, and only the axe had managed to piece into the shield once. A sharp blade and enough force to cut through the shield...
'That's what I need!' Conjuring extra arms made of ice, mud and even fire, the barbarian, grabbed the axe handle tight. Circling the priestess for a while, he dodged the blades as they flew in his direction. Spying an opening right as he'd dodged both of them, he took a deep breath and with the force of eight arms–each bringing down the full effect of his strength individually, Wolf slammed the axe against the shield. But this time, it cracked and it continued cracking until the entire summon crumbled into bits.
"THERE! DONEE!!" He screamed as the axe struck the ground. Shattering the very next moment from being stressed beyond its durability, the crimson carnage was no more and the stats that Wolf had gained from it, could already be felt depleting away.
Panting heavily after throwing numerous blows against the shield, Wolf looked into Kanna's eyes, a smile riding on his lips.
"There, was that enough of a test?" He asked, and the priestess bowed in defeat.
But the battle wasn't yet over until she announced it verbally. Thus, lifting her head with a chuckle escaping her lips, she raised her wand in the air and announced.
"I, Kanna Su'yeh, forfeit this battle!" A stillness took over the arena after her announcement. The people had been watching the battle with such interest that they wanted it to last a bit longer. Holding their breath every time Wolf escaped those scissors, they felt as though it was their own head ducking under those blades.
"Wolf De' Didact is the victor!" But as the queen's words echoed through the arena, the people came to their senses. Looking around at each other, visibly confused, it took them a moment before breaking into cheers. The thrill of a battle won by a hair breadth-quite literally in this case, there was something about it that made them feel alive despite not taking part in the competition themselves.
The cheers continued for as long as Wolf and the priestess stood in the arena, and once the two were gone, Astoria announced the last qualifying battle. Between Sola and William, an absolutely unnecessary show. Even the most dull of the audience knew that the maid would forfeit before the battle even started.
And as Wolf arrived at the basement's entrance to see that very faunan who would step out into the arena next, her anxiety was palpable and she was shaking from the mere thought of fighting someone like William.
"I'll go check on the reptilian woman," as he tried to reach for her shoulder, Kanna grabbed his hand from the other end. Looking at him with a smile, she added. "But you make sure to win this alright?"
Masking a chuckle behind sealed lips, she ventured forward, leaving Wolf behind. And as he turned back to Sola, he was met with a tenser expression than before resting on her face. Placing a hand on her shoulder, he gave it a reassuring squeeze.
"You'll be fine, just raise your hand and forfeit alright?"
"Y-yeahhh, that's the plan ahaha..." Awkwardly laughing to herself, she tried not to think too much of the battle, but with the tenseness persisting on her face, it was obvious that she couldn't help it.
"What class are you anyways?" Renee asked, curious about the bunny's potential fighting abilities.
Although reluctant at first, Sola revealed in a moment.
"I used to heal people at the slave encampment, so maybe a healer?" Her expression contorted heavily at the memory. Shaking her head, she tried to force it out again. "I never got myself checked at the guild though, so I don't know for sure."
"Wait, no documentation does that mean–"
"She doesn't even know her rank," Renee interjected before Wolf could finish his thoughts.
Exchanging glances with each other, the two had a look of worry reflected in their eyes. Sola noticed it for a moment, but then replacing it came a stern expression. Unsure what was going on between the two, she took a step back and donned another awkward smile.
"What is it?"
After a moment of pause with nothing said, Wolf heaved a sigh and spoke to the faunan maid.
"Undocumented people are usually considered a threat as nobody knows what level of aggression to expect from them," folding his hands, Wolf allowed his soldiers to fall and let go of the angst brewing up in his heart. "There have been instances where really strong people kept their ranks a secret and did horrendous things. That's why it's mandatory to get ranking documentation nowadays."

"Not to mention you can be fined if you don't have them and a guard decides to stop you for whatever reason," Renee explained further.
Both her and Wolf were more impressed than worried about Sola not having documentation. Even the queen was made to document herself, although it was mostly propaganda to encourage people to document themselves.
"I never needed one before though," Sola responded, seeming lost about the whole conversation.
Ranking documentation stamped by the guild master was the only identification document in Aestonia. Without it, you couldn't wander through the streets, buy anything at the bay or conduct any form of business, not even as a mercenary or an adventurer. However, being a slave and then William's maid, Sola had never had a reason to even head out of the castle without being amongst the escort of the prince. Hence, she never needed the document.
"Well we'll handle that later for now–"
Being cut off yet again by Astoria's announcement, Wolf turned towards the arena, and instantly he noticed William standing at the opposite entrance to the basement.
"Sola and William De' Didact, gather this instant!" And with that yet another battle began, only to end up disappointing the public.
However, as the realization set in that it was finally time for the brothers to fight, the coliseum grew quiet and everyone's heart began pounding...
