Nyxfall 7: The Veilbreakers-Chapter 65: Second Try At Grimhorn Den
Everyone finally gathered near the dungeon. Kai formed a party with Mimi, Prince, Bella, Zayden, Jor, Sherry, and three guys from the Red Wolf Legion guild, including their leader, Xterminate07.
Kai had bought a new sword when he was perusing the market yesterday for goods he could sell in the online shop for profit. It wasn’t anything major, but it still had a rare weapon with over +12 to attack. With his base +10, the damage he could deal with the sword was quite impressive, to say the least. Actully even higher than his headshots with a bow. It only had one effect, but it was still quite good for the 20 gold he had bought it for.
"Let me be clear once again," Xterminate07 said. "The payment will only be given if we go past the second boss after defeating her."
Kai nodded. "I hear you loud and clear. Just don’t run away without paying."
Xterminate07 gnashed his teeth but still put up a smile. He knew Kai recorded everything - doing his reserch on him before today, so after the public offer Kai had made, if he backed out of the deal without paying, their guild would lose even the little bit of face they had left after breaking Beast Hollow’s dungeon record before Kai and the Obsidian Knights arrived in the town.
A few seconds after entering, they were already being greeted by the very familiar Greenhorn Whelps. Kai had made slight changes to the formation—this time, Bella, Prince, and Xterminate07 were at the very front. Behind them were Mimi, Jor, one of the Red Wolf guys, and Sherry in the middle. The last line was just him and another archer from Red Wolf—maybe the weapon was appealing to women for some reason, as the archer too was a female.
Kai took out his sword and placed it in the newly bought scabbard. It would increase the weight of his character, making movement slower, but as an archer, it was fine. He too, like all his companions, had learned a lesson from their last failure.
The first wave of Whelps was eradicated so swiftly and efficiently that they had a few seconds to themselves before another wave came as they walked forward in formation. Using this chance, Kai used his Basic Forger’s Infusion to apply crippling oil to all the main weapons of the ten-player party.
The Red Wolf guys were hesitant for a second before handing over their new weapons, but at last, following in their leader’s footsteps, they accepted the free boost.
The 10% chance to slow a target on hit might not seem too amazing, but when facing multiple opponents at once or a single boss, over ten players having this effect active could really make a whole lot of difference.
The effect could already be seen, as the Whelps and the Bonegnashers sometimes froze after a hit, making it really easy to deliver critical hits to their vital parts.
The number of players had increased, and the number of monsters in each wave remained constant, slowly increasing by one or two over time. Sixteen Whelps at once was not a problem now at all. Instead, the damage of the front-line players was so efficient and well-spread that they sometimes had time to help out after finishing their share of Whelps and Bonegnashers.
The archer from Red Wolf was quite good too, almost keeping up with Kai’s own change in targets—unlike Sherry, who always shot at whatever was closest. Kai had noticed she was having a hard time aiming, which was why he had placed her in the middle so she could have greater reach. The mid-range Red Wolf guy was also quite good—it was the same guy who had the skill to transform into a cyan demonic creature with four arms.
The skill was actually an emulation of the Exodian Rageborn class’s bloodline skill. But unlike those pure Exodians, they could not keep up their transformations for a long time. More like an ultimate skill than a base power—even with 80 points in Exodian affinity. That’s just how the Nexus Kin path was: capable of many things, but unable to excel at any—always half of what their originals were. That was probably why neither race considered them a threat or even people worth noting. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
They cleaved their way through the first giant door, killing every single monster that came in their way so they could relax outside the first mini-boss gate for a while before tackling the guy. Maeka’s bow was still dealing damage, but compared to the archer’s fancy bow beside him, it clearly lacked the damage necessary at this level.
Compared to her 130–170 and sometimes even 200+ damaging arrows, his max of 120 or 140 was laughable. But unlike her—he never missed. In the time she shot one arrow—pulling from her quiver—Kai could already shoot three. In the end, his total damage far exceeded hers. The infinite arrow feature was unmatched, no matter what anyone said.
"How are we doing this, team leader?" Xterminate07 said with a smile rivaling Kai’s own in fakeness. They were healing up outside Vurkrash’s boss room.
Vurkrash was no big deal now that they had more people to control the mini-boss when it summoned the 40-plus Whelps. But with poor planning, they could still lose someone.
Kai replied, "We attack surrounding the mini-boss, having enough space to dodge and launch attacks. Three of you and I, along with this guy"—Kai pointed at the Red Wolf guy who had the transformation skill—"will handle the mini-boss when it summons the Whelps. The others will form a circle around us and keep the Whelps away from the boss."
"What do you mean we will handle the boss?" asked the guy Kai had pointed at.
"Interrupt the skills, dodge the unstoppable attacks, and deal damage continuously.. What else?" Prince replied simply.
The others in Kai’s team nodded as if that was the most common-sense thing—which it was—but it was a strategy that put more burden of mana and stamina on a few guys rather than distributing the task equally. Not the strategy most groups of people went with, especially experts.
