Chapter 305: _Splitting Burdens

Lucian’s POV

*****

"It makes so much sense now," He murmured after the revelation his mother dropped on them. He stood close to an amethyst necklace display case, eyes flicking over it briefly before they turned to Elowen. "How Amara was able to slip a curse of that power into the necklace."

His mother nodded, turning to face Elian now. "And also how she’s able to make the curse still kick despite the bracelet being destroyed."

She swiped a hand in front of her, revealing a life-sized holographic image of the heart jewel bracelet.

"Heart jewels aren’t just fancy stones capable of holding pieces of our loved ones." Elowen raised her head, voice tense. "In fact, THAT’S what makes them a ticking bomb. To hold memories, a heart jewel has to imprint deep into your consciousness."

Lucian paused. He remembered the day his mother gave him the bracelet and how she guided him to use it. He’d stayed for several minutes, searching within himself for his most special memories with Elian.

From their heated sparring session over a month back. To the drinks they had at the Howling Wolf hotel—yes, that memory had Garrick in it when they thought he was Axel, but still.

And then the ones he held dearest... The moments when Elian sat by his side after he lost his memories. Despite everything they’ve been through. Despite how much of an asshole he’s been in the past.

The Alpha Prince had let the heart jewel make copies of these memories then let his emotions for the memories follow. As for his heart—

"The imprint the necklace leaves in your psyche when collecting memories," Elowen continued. "Also links it to your heart. Every beat, every shift... everything. Hence the name." Slowly, she grabbed Elian’s hand. "This curse... If she’s really using it to transfer any harm made on her to you—it means she can most likely split the effects."

Lucian didn’t provide a word beyond all she’s said.

Elian’s system already confirmed the curse—the actual one linked with divinity—could affect anyone linked to him in any way.

Mate bonds especially. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"S–So..." Elian stuttered, taking a nervous step away from his mother. "Now that we know about all this, what do we do? How do we truly break the curse?"

The Alpha Prince glanced at his brother just then. The lad hadn’t said a word for a while now. Maybe because there wasn’t much he could offer in a situation like this.

"Curses like these aren’t broken, Elian," Elowen said sharply. "Not when there are many delicate layers included in it now. One mistake trying to forcefully break it, and we could worsen things."

Lucian’s brows furrowed. "But... But Kyren is a transcendent core mage like his mother. Can’t he—"

"Him being a transcendent core mage as well doesn’t mean he can precisely erase a curse." The Luna Queen shook her head. "Even if he’s successful, the effects on you, him, Elian... " She gasped, placing a hand on her mouth. "That... That snake. She plotted everything out."

Brushing his right hand through his hair, Lucian drew in deep breaths. He turned his head to Elian who was completely silent. His mate had his arms crossed, violet eyes moving in that familiar way.

The one that usually meant he wasn’t just "thinking". He was working with that system of his.

To be honest, getting used to everything Elian confessed to him was a LOT to process. Rebirth. A system. His soul is a fragment of a dead goddess—wait.

The fucking fact that the MOON GODDESS was dead. The deity his people have worshipped and revered for aeons... Was actually nothing more than a crystal buried in the Dark Lands.

Saying his worldview had shifted would be an understatement. Things were no longer what they seemed, and he didn’t know what or who to trust.

Except Elian.

He couldn’t explain it, but despite everything... He trusted the omega with everything in him. If Elian wanted he’d have kept on living without letting him know his true nature. All the craziness surrounding him.

His truth was better than silence. And Lucian would be damned before he takes that for granted—or let that witch have her way with him.

It was why he was a little upset when he found out Elian didn’t tell him and Kyren about the curse’s new and terrifying upgrade. He thought they’d moved past secrets now.

"Wait," Elian suddenly lowered his arms after what felt like an eternity of silence. His violet eyes locked on Lucian, then moved to Elowen. "Your majes—I mean, Elowen. You said something. That curses like this aren’t broken."

Lucian frowned.

Huh?

Yet his mother gave an acknowledging nod. "Indeed. Breaking one with merely the power of another mage of the same level isn’t without—"

"Pardon, but I’m trying to make a point." Elian raised a hand, his eyes getting distant. He definitely seemed like he’d discovered something big. "What if, instead of outright breaking it, we weaken it?"

Sigh... Spoke too soon.

"Weaken a transcendent-level curse?" Lucian repeated, as if the mere concept was unfathomable. "That... Where do we even start? I guess we’ll need Kyren’s help but then—"

"The curse can affect all three of us." Elian took two steps forward. "You, me and Kyren. Which makes us all connected outside the mate bonds."

Lucian’s brows furrowed.

Why did those words feel like Elian was getting to something?

"If we want to ’weaken’ it..." Elian wagged a finger. "... The answer might lie in finding a way to split the burden. The curse’s power between all three of us."

For a moment, no one spoke. Not because they didn’t understand him—but because they did.

From this angle, Lucian watched his mother’s expression twist into pure horror. Even his bones got a chill at the thought.

"Splitting... A curse’s power?" Elowen repeated, voice trembling. "That’s equally dangerous. You’d all be in more direct risk if it’s possible—"

"But it’ll leave the curse itself weakened." Elian countered boldly. "Kyren isn’t an easy target for a transcendent-level curse. The part that is split into him would be vulnerable. Lucian—while not a Celestial sovereign yet, could stand a better chance. So whatever power is left behind by the curse... Would be easy to erase or break without complications!"

He clapped once, eyes brightened with pride. "Gods, we need to call Kyren and tell him! I mean—I’d have to start explaining how the curse is back all over again and face some scolding for not telling him. But it’s so worth it if this theory can come in handy—"

Stretching out his hand, Elian tapped on a small black communication ring in his fingers.

But as he dialled Kyren, Lucian’s mind wandered.

If Elian’s theory could work, it means his chances of success would be even higher—if he levelled up to a celestial sovereign Alpha.

The royal baptism of moonlight wouldn’t come until before his official coronation as Alpha King.

What if—

"Mother?" Lucian called out to Elowen, making up his mind. "After my press briefing to the Empire tonight, I want a meeting with our spiritual leaders."

He paused, fists clenching beside him. Elian noticed his demeanour and arched his brow.

Then Lucian added: "It’s time I evolved. I want to go through the baptism of moonlight."
